Topic: Breeds Club / Samoyed At least 10 years ago, a U. of Florida veterinary scientist wrote a very long paper about all the reasons northern breeds in general (and I think Samoyeds in particular) stay cooler in the summer than people might expect.
One of his points was that in the subarctic, temperature range in a single day can be much greater than in European climates, so northern dogs genetically have adapted.
His research indicated that one of these adaptions was the snout shape, which serves as an effective venturi for cooling air in the summer and warming it in the winter. Somehow the venturi effect ties in with far more efficient lapping than in European breeds.
He also did some research that actually backs up the "double coat as insulation" from warm weather theory.
Of course, another (not researched) reason Samoyeds stay cool is that they're smart enough to bring their humans the remote control for the air conditioner unit when it's getting too warm. |
