Topic: General / Rottweilers are bad and here's proof i as (i hope)a responsible dog lover/owner would like to add my two cents worth i have resisted the urge so far(and now failed!) to join this discussion but here goes..it is so ridiculous and so wrong to judge and label certain breeds of dogs as dangerous.ALL dogs are dangerous in the wrong hands and under certain conditions (as any animal and that includes humans!!)i am 45 (thats another story..)and to this day stilll bear a scar i got when i was 18 months old,my crime?my parents lifted me out of our car at a picnic area and virtually as soon as my feet touched the ground a dog came out of nowhere and grabbed me,that quick,no provoking from anyone!it was not a rotti, gsd, pitbull but a "simple"mongrel-somebody loved that apparently harmless mutt but on that day something set it off and i happened to be in its sights-wrong place, wrong time.the resut for me was/is a faint scar left, along with a deep abiding love and RESPECT for all dogs which stayed with me and despite the horror witnessed by my parents, they also felt this way.yes i was lucky it could have been fatal, there are kids/adults that don't survive either physically or mentally.years later, and 2 years this november i relived the same horror in my own home with my own precious then 3yr son tiggy,we had two beautiful related greyhounds-horse & honey, soft, gentle, loving, graceful and so loved by all of us especially tiggy,he seemed to have a mutual relationship with horse(a gentle giant)you've guessed the rest-despite being careful, watchful educating tiggy and my two teenagers etc etc.i popped out for ten minutes, leaving both dogs in their own comfort zone and with "dog gate"firmly closed,in this time a visiting teenager went in to get a video and left door open-enter tiggy who saw this and knew it was bad and so tried to tell the kids but they were too distracted, tiggy thought he'd give the dogs a quick cuddle, first was honey, alls okay so he moves onto the settee to give horse his cuddle-horse a few days earlier had cut his foot and despite it hurting had stood patiently whilst i had cleaned it up and i remember saying how good he was even stinging disenfectant hadn't made him "snappy" a real gentleman.i got the call to get home fast-when i got there tiggy sat stock still(in major shock)with a face i didnt recognise(i knew it was tiggy because of the clothes he was wearing)his whole head was a football.a nightmare week later,3 operations,80 stitches alone inside his mouth,he came round and asked for...horse.my brave little boy was worried that his parents had sent the dog away because he had been naughty.admittedly his fathers first thought was to kill the dog,my thoughts were just of sheer horror, thoughts and tears i still have now(as i type)tiggy is now a very healthy dog obsessed little boy with a scar just like mums(virtually the same place)the worst thing for him is that he has NO FEAR OF ANY DOG and so we keep EDUCATING him.i have learned a valuable lesson that any dog can be dangerous and yes i have gucci, the sweetest, lovable but potentially dangerous dog in the world.even a tiny chihuahua can rip a face to pieces in a unguarded moment.we considered our actions carefully, led by tiggy we again have a dog.and yes i am the most thoughtless, uncaring, hard mother in the world because of this,it doesn't bother tiggy but his scar is a daily reminder to me that i let my guard down for ony a few minutes.sorry for the extra long post, lets just take a step back and cool our boots and most of all just be careful.i hope horse and honey have a nice life, tiggy says horse growled twice and bit once before bolting for the garden.an expert told me that the dog didnt intend to savage him,as he wouldnt have let go,adding that it was worse because the dogs muzzle was arge and a 3 yr olds face so small. thankfully everyone survived and as they say knowledge is power. ps.tiggy managed to RE CLOSE the dog gate despite being in desperate need, before he sought help from his siblings ,as ever always thinking of his dogs safety... |
