Topic: Advice, Training And Tips / HELP – My Dog Needs Training

My dog, KJ, is a huge, dumb lug. I love to take him places with me but he does not know how to behave when he goes places and people kind of don’t want him around… He doesn’t even behave in my home. I mean he is not a bad dog – he doesn’t chew and he does listen somewhat but not the way most dogs will. He begs for food, will sit on command when he feels like it, and “stay” is impossible. Getting him to walk half decently is next to impossible. I will admit that lately there have been some instability in his life – coming home with me 2 months ago, traveling a lot, meeting all kinds of new people…But I had hoped for a little better behavior than what I am getting out of him. I have never had to train a dog myself before (thankfully they have all been trained when I got them or I was too young to remember what my parents did to train them.)I was thinking about classes but to be honest – I just don’t think I have the money for that right now and like I said I travel a lot so classes might not work for me. Does anyone one know of some websites or any other sources for information that I might be able to use to gain some knowledge on basic obedience training?

Topic: Rescues, Shelters And Adoptions / Save a life! Rescue a dog!

i guess you would call KJ a rescue dog as well. He came from the free column in the paper. I have had dogs that I have found on the side of the road and a few that came from shelters. Growing up, I was bitten by a Golden that came from a shelter, so I was a little scared of taking a shelter dog dog into my home. Goldens are known to be great dogs for kids - who would have thought he would attack me? My first rescue dog though was a Pit Bull and she was so gentle and loving. My friends daughter would pull on her and poke at her and Diamond never growled, showed her teeth, or anything. Pits have such a terrible rep that at first I was terrified to bring that dog into my home. I am glad that I got over my fear and brought Diamond home. She was a very rewarding part of my life. I am all for adopting from a shelter.
