Topic: General / go pitbulls

I'll bark at dat one Gat!  I had a blast at your place!  You and kauai are the tops..oh and Paco is a great little dude.  I liked Tammy Fay!  Meow!!  Gotta love the puds man.  They are great snuggle buds!

It is a mixture of nuture and nature that make us what we are.  My dog mom is a very aggressive apbt and is not one to be messed with...as my human mom says, she needs to be spayed or put down..NO MORE LITTERs FROM HER.  I'm a BYB pup and was abused for the first 6 months, but then got to this home, and I'm a good dog, well socialized and love everyone.  I love to meet new dogs and people.

So just remember how you treat your dog will reflect in how your dog treats others.  With VERY few exceptions.

Also, I might add, that i just got a new dog brother back in December , and as most folks will say that we are animal aggressive, We are good buds and play and run and swim with each other now.  Yes, there were a few days of tenseness.  Mom asked that i be submissive for the first few days andd then we worked it out and he learned that i was pack leader here on our ranch.  When he arrived, he was 4 years old and had always been an only dog, unsocialized and not neutered!  My dog brother is a  Doberman.

To keep him/her cool, just keep water and privide shade...a fan if you can where they can't chew it if they have to be outside.  Food, a good food for large breed puppies.  If you can no preservities in it as well.  Give them the best you can to get them started in the right direction.  Make sure pup has been wormed!  And get him/her started on a flea killer/preventive drops.  Oh yeah, and invest in a GOOD undercoat rake becauseyou will need it come next spring when the pup "blows coat"!  You will be suprised!  15 min a night with him and the rake will make your house hairless if he is in the house.  Good LUck!!!

Topic: Rescues, Shelters And Adoptions / abandoned dogs

It is saddening to hear people dump dogs.  I know because we have our two.  One definately abused, and one not raised so well, but loved and his ex owner was moving.  Had he dropped the dog off at a shelter, he would have been, very unadoptable unless a rescue would have picked him up.  He is a 4 yr old Dobie.  He has come a long way in the past 6 months.  From human female aggressive (this was fun to work with, being a woman) to being overly protective of my husband.  But with love and LOTS of patience he has realized I'm not so bad and now we are pretty good friends.  We still have some work ahead of us, but he and I are getting there.  As with Dobies, they attach to one person and that was my husband.  So that left me with lots of work and a bridge to build so we can have a good bond as well.  Please remind everyone, to go to the shelter near them, look on craigs list, and contact the rescues.  Please don't buy a dog, adopt one and save a life!

Topic: Advice, Training And Tips / Terrified of vet's

more than his annual visit if possible would be better.  Weekly for a month with goodies in the exam room where he freeks out.  and work it to once a month.  Your vet should not have any problems if he/she is a caring understanding vet.  If you explain the situation they should be just fine.  If not, i would be finding another vet who really cares about the animal!

Topic: Advice, Training And Tips / My lab wont listen..help

I agree with many of you that no do is too old to train.  It takes time and the ability to see and use everyday things to help train the dog.  As well as precise and direct instructions for the dog.  CONSISTANCY is a good key.  I trained a Pyr (considered a no obediance type dog) who was 6 years old when i rescued her and 7 when we did classes.  She passes at the head of her class of 20 dogs.  At first i wasn't sure it was going to work, but with love and and rewards (i only do hug and kiss rewards) she came around.  My son who was 3 was taught to handle her and walked her.  Prior to coming to us she was abused and left tied on a chain or in a pen in deplorabel conditions..she weighed 67lbs and was 32 in.  So my advice is to work with your dog and take every opportunity you have.  One of my favorite ones is when they are lying down as you walk past them tell them down...and if they stay just like they were, reward them.  They will equate the word with the action over time.  And the recall that someone spoke of is a SUPER idea...a nice 14ft lead is great.  Had to work like that with my hubbys dobie.  Good Luck!  I know you can do it!

Topic: Breeds Club / American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers and Staffordshire Bull Terriers

I'm glad to see peeps are taking up for our breed eventhough they don't have any in their home!  Mom never owned a bully breed dog, but had always heard how loyal and fun and "human like" we can be.  I didn't dissapoint!  Mom doesn't tell folks that i would help them carry off the tv is some one broke in (when no one is home).  My UPS man always brings me treats and trys to take me on his runs with him.  But stangers are leary of me because of the hype and I supose my 100lb body doesn't help.  But I have changed quite a few minds about our TYPE of breed.  My old owners tried to make me mean by hitting me, and mom rescued me!  One of my dog friends parents was even being turned by all the media hype (and he is a dobie) to fear a bully's.  But after meeting me in person and seeing how well i get along with others he has joined our cause!  Wooo HOOO!!  Mommy works long and hard at changing opinons about our type and has been involved with TEXAS BSL as well.  BSL is illegal in Texas...but some how one town decided that it was going to do it anyway and now they are having a hard time.  Mommy and I had to drive through that town just after the law was enacted and I sat PROUDLYIN THE FRONT SEAT (with my dog seatbelt on) and smiled at the 3 police men that drove past us.  But mommy and I are working to change minds.  My obedience class was a great opportunity to change opinons of the type.  Since I'm goofy looking and have long tail and floopy ears (like is should) most people didnt' tag me right away for bully.  Their sterotypical picture is that of a staffie... And mommy and my teacher were both proud to announce to the class (after many had asked since they thought i was so cute and sweet) what breed i was.  A hush came over the class and then we had discussion.  It was cool!  My trainer use to own some bullies, but now she trains service dogs.  This fall i will see her again because she is going to help be become a therapy dog!  Wooo Hoooo   all the pets and loves a dog could ever want!  Oh yeah, and car rides!

Keep the faith ya'll!  And remind someone if they don't think it can happen to their breed, to take a look at canada..labs are on the bsl list in some of the areas!
