Topic: Health, Diet And Vets / eyes tell all Tina, I agree with checking their eyes. Not only do they signal eye problems, they could show other things as well. Sometimes when Sami is not feeling well, one of the biggest signals to us that something is wrong is her eyes just don't look right. Maybe they look heavy or dull. One time that she was sick, even her vet could tell right away that something was off by looking at them. Of course he needed to examine her to determine what was wrong, but her eyes were a clear indicator that something was off.

Topic: Travel / travel to Canada? I know you have to have proof that all their vaccinations are up to date. We have been looking into going to Nova Scotia and the ferries there say you have to leave them in the car. When we were in Vermont there was a ferry that went over to NY that said as long as they were leashed and well behaved they could go on board. I would check with the ferry company. You could also check with the Canadian Tourist Dept. to double check any other restrictions or rules. Here are a couple of links. www.canadatourism.com or

Topic: Health, Diet And Vets / Turkey Warning This is so frustrating, trying to determine what best to feed our dogs. My vet, (as many do) pushes Science Diet. After I took the time to really read the ingredients, I decided not to feed it to Sami anymore. I have been on the hunt for a more natural and better quality food. My vet hasn't advised against turkey and I see several quality and natural dog foods that the main ingredient is Turkey. I have also read several articles that say turkey is a good source of lean protein for dogs. So now what? Between recalls, poor quality products, allergies, etc, it is hard enough knowing what best to feed our babies. Now I am reading conflicting reports. Fresh food is always an option and then we know what they are getting, but then there is the problem of their teeth. Aarrrgghhh, I try to do the right thing but, I'm just not sure what that is. |

Topic: General / I GOT THE MUSIC WORKING!!! Ok, it took me about 20 times to figure out what I was doing wrong. Maybe you were doing the same thing. After you get the code, go to your profile and hit edit, then go down to your bio and on the top where the B I :-) html is click on the word html. Then another screen will pop up. Scroll to the bottom of that and then paste and submit. I kept trying to add it directly to the bio part and that's why mine didn't work. Hope this helps. |

Topic: Media / Jamie Foxx Defends Michael Vick I also use to enjoy watching Jamie Foxx. I thought he was funny and when he made the jump to serious roles, he really showcased his talent. I also will add him to the list of people I will no longer watch. "I didn’t know that was Fed time. So, Mike probably just didn’t read his handbook on what not to do as a black star.” Ok, so it's only wrong knowing that it is a federal offense??? Does it really need to be listed in a "handbook"??? And as far as the cultural thing...I don't even want to go there!!! I realize that that not all people hold dogs in the high esteem we do, but they are living breathing beings. They have thoughts and feel pain. Is it too much to expect people, whether celebrity or every day people, wealthy or poor, regardless of their culture and up bringing, to feel compassion and act in a humane way? And not just dogs, other animals as well. That kitten story made me sick and I think if they find the person responsible, they should have their eyes spray painted shut too! |

Topic: Fun / Where did you get your name? If we had a human daughter, her name was to be Samantha Louise. (After my grandfather Sam and my mom Louise.) We ended up with a beautiful four legged furry daughter instead and felt she deserved to be honored with the same name. We shortened it to Sami Lou. |

Topic: Health, Diet And Vets / PET INSURANCE We have used VPI since Sami was a puppy, about 4 years now. So far we have not had any problems and thankfully she has had nothing seriously wrong. They have always paid our claims in a timely fashion. Of course as of right now we are currently waiting on reimbursement for a well care visit. I also just submitted a claim today for a sick visit a couple of weeks ago. If we have any problems I will be sure to let you know. Another thing that may be of interest to some is Credit Cards that can be used only for Medical/Dental expenses. This is for humans as well as animals. The only thing is not all doctors/vets accept them as a form of payment. While my husband's dentist does, (that is how we found out about it), our vet does not. You can access their websites though and see if your vets are on their list. It is something I want to talk to our vet about. Anyway, they work like regular credit cards, but as I mentioned, only for medical type expenses. They often offer 6 to 18 months interest deferred depending on the amount you charge. While it still means paying, it is a good option if you do not have the money when the expense occurs, and have time to pay it off. The websites are: www.healthcard.citicards.com and www.carecredit.com |

Topic: Breeds Club / Yorkies I knew about Yorkies being ratters but I don't think my little one knows that. (Or maybe she thinks it doesn't apply to mice) We had a rodent problem a while back when there was construction going on down the street. We had a vacant apartment next door and I went over there to check on something. Of course Sami was hot on my heals. All of a sudden I saw a mouse run across the room. I let out a scream and turned to see Sami high tail it back to our place. Some ratter she turned out to be. LOL (Of course it may have been my scream that sent her packing, but so much for protecting mommy huh!) |

Topic: General / How did you first hear of mydogspace? I thought it may be interesting to see where everyone first heard about the site. (especially for Hershey and Robert) We live in Mass and were in a store in Stoneham, (a suburb just north of Boston), when we met Gizmo's mom and she told us about it. |

Topic: Health, Diet And Vets / In Case of Emergency Out vet has magnets with his info on it. Our's stays on the cabinet in the kitchen. Whenever we leave Sami with our friend I always leave a 'baby sitter's sheet' with not only her vet's info but the info to the closest 24 hour emergeny animal hospital. |

Topic: Health, Diet And Vets / Pet Insurance I was wondering how many dog owners, especially new ones, are aware that you can purchase pet insurance. When people who don't have pets hear me say that, they laugh at me. They think it's another silly thing like my dressing my dog up. However I think it's one of the smartest choices I've made. I luckilly first heard of it when Sami was a pup. Just like humans, the younger they are when they get it, the cheaper the premiums are. There are all different plans that you can purchase. Sami has the premium plan with wellcare and extra coverage for cancer. (Just in case heaven forbids she ever needs it.) With the wellcare plan they cover a portion of flea/tick and heartworm meds. They also will pay towards vaccines such as dystemper, rabies etc. The first year they will pay toward either spay or neuter and every year after they will pay towards teeth cleaning. I pay less than $35.00 a month. I get back about half of that just for the afore mentioned items. Luckilly she hasn't been sick too often, but it's nice to know that there is coverage for that too. The insurance company we go through reimburses us. (We have to pay the vet up front) but they are pretty quick about processing the claims. There are several companies that provide pet insurance but if anyone is interested you can check out who we use at www.petinsurance.com |
