Rottweilers and other 'dominant' breed need alot of direction. When I got my dog, I didn't really know very much about the breed ... i just really felt sorry for him. Fortunately my trainer was VERY knowledgable and told me what to do to address his issues. She told me that he was intelligent (we figured this out on his second day of obedience training ... ) and told me to be stern and have very high expectations for him. And you know what? He has NEVER fallen short of my expectations!!! Thank GOD for my trainer! (and now I know PERSONALLY that it's the owner, and not the dog ... because if you have the correct relationship with your dog, he will listen to you, respect your commands... and follow through every time!!!)

that is soooo true! I take Jersey EVERYWHERE with me, to parades, picnics, outdoor events. Most people, initally are afraid... but there will be that one 4 yr. old little boy or girl that will run over and ask to pet him. And when I say "Yes", the parents' eyes pop outta their heads, and other people start bracing themselves to run away. And... When they see jersey wagg'in his nub, and giving kisses and cuddling with the child... everyone (except me and the child) is totally shocked (it's all because of how the media portrays them). Jersey LOOOOVES 'humanoids'!!! I also take him to the dog park every day (weather permitting)... and when he gets there he greets every dog, one at a time... and then greets the "parents" one at a time ... He has become a local celebrity because of his personality and manners.

Yeah, I totally agree with you .... if you can't love my dog, don't even TRY to love me! A few years ago, I decided to go to graduate school (i'm still a student... have a few years left). I was accepted at a good school, received a full scholarship. So, in preparation to move, I started looking for places that would allow me to rent with my son. Of course no one would rent to me because of the BS insurance clauses and liabilities and such. Sooo... I decided to buy a house for my dog (and myself). So yeah ... trust me, no man can ever come to my house and complain about my dog being in my bed, or on the couch or making a mess .. because I got the house for his comfort. Furthermore, I make it know to everyone that I have a VERY LARGE rottweiler, of course, I know him, I know what to expect from him and I trust him. So I know that ANYONE can come to my house and he will never respond aggressively (unless you try to hurt me .. that's the only time that he will react ... and he even understands the concept of "playfighting"... cuz he doesn't respond). So yah, I just tell folks "if your afraid of dogs, don't come to my house... cuz I don't put my dog 'away' for anyone"

LOL!!! I had a boyfriend that was jealous of my son once. And he posed this question "If jersey and I were in a burning building and you could only help one of of us get out, whom would you save?" .... My answer: "jersey, because he doesn't have opposable thumbs and cannot turn doorknobs or unlock windows (to jump out)"... yah, my ex-BF didn't like that answer... so I said "Ok Ok... well, i'd just stay in there with both of you" . . . needless to say, he wasn't very pleased. But, I didn't need that guy anyways!!!!

Oh kool ... so I guess my son isn't a weirdo (not that it mattered anyways) LOL!!! Jersey has learned a new trick. My neighbors, next door have 2 retrievers and one of the barks CONTINUOUSLY... so Jerz. used to run along the fence with the retreiver and they'd bark at each other and hop up and down chasing each other along the fence. Well the barking is freak'in annoying ... So I taught him "quiet!", and now the barking has been reduced (by Jersey) by 70%. However, NOW he HOWLS at the neighbors dog ... I remember the first time I heard this noise ... and I looked outside to see Jersey, and the neighbors dog Chins up in the air, mouths circular shaped .. and howling in sychrony! Yes, that's my silly son!!!!

Hey, this would probably be a good place to ask this question. My son, Jersey is the second rott. mix that i've had (both of them were rescued, so I don't know what the other half is). He's a very silly boy, and does silly things to get attention. One of his favorite things to do... when he's really happy is to make a loud sound ... it sounds like a growl and a howl all rolled into one (like a REALLY loud GROWL)... But he'll only do it if he has something in his mouth (and yes, when he wan'ts to 'grumble' for you, you see him looking around fevereshly for an object... a shoe, a sock, a stick, a ball, a stuffed animal) The sound kind be quite scary if you've never heard it before... but everyone who knows him laughs when they hear him 'sing' ... I've heard that it's a common thing with rottweilers, but i've never actually met another owner whos' dog does this ... is this a rottweiler thing? (Or is it a Jersey thing?)
