Topic: Advice, Training And Tips / 12 yr old needs control of Dane

Hmm , I didn't know that about danes, I mean I've done research too but not specifically to danes so not much to say back for that. But I will state that Vitamin C also helps with growth and to prevent bone disorders. I know, totally off subject, but that's some of the recent research I've done and I've confirmed it to be true. I guess just do the obedience classes with your daughter as the teacher. You can even have her try and teach things at home. Like any commands he may already know try and have her almost always say the commands instead of you.

Most of the research I've done on neutering states that it slows growth. I've never heard of dogs getting gangly from it though. I have a friend with a male great dane that was neutered at around 12 weeks and he's very muscular and large...

As far as the neutering goes, the longer you wait the worse it is for him. Male dogs are more likely to get certain cancers until they are fixed, its the same with females. Fixing a dog doesn't change what size they are going to be, and if he's 125 lbs already I don't see why you should wait any longer. Fixing him is the first step to getting him under control. Then basic obedience. Like WeLoveOur7Dogs said let your daughter take him to obedience. Go with to watch(just in case theres a problem) but let her do the handling so he starts to see her as a leader not an equal.

Topic: General / Rottweilers are bad and here's proof

Hey I guessed which one wasn't a staffy!!! then I checked and I was right. I feel smart now, bol. Smile

Why do people post topics like this, there's really no point. It's like, what someone would do just because they know it will piss everyone off. A lot of people have certain breeds they dislike or don't trust. Me personally, the only type of dog I worry about is wolf hybrids, because THEY are unpredictable, now that's not saying I don't like them but I'm wary of them, because they are part wild(I have worked with them).

As far as rotties go...I really don't think they are any more unpredictable than many other breeds out there. To tell you the truth I think some smaller breeds of dogs tend to be more unpredictable than larger breeds. My neighbor used to have a rottie and she was the sweetest dog ever, but you'd never want to intrude into their house.

I just looked up the list of the amount of attacks by different breeds of dog, and from the highest number to lowest of the breeds that seem to be spoken of here

1. Pit Bull - 1110

2.Rottie - 409

3.GSD - 63

4. Rottie/ GSD mix -13

This was collected between September 1982 to November 16, 2006.

Now, as far as pit bulls are concerned, I LOVE Pitties, and I will state that most attacks were due to the fact that many people still are breeding them for fighting. Sadly. And I've also seen many come into shelters from abusing homes.

Rotties - 409, in 24 years, which would be about 17 attacks yearly. These dogs don't attack because of their breed, I believe that most attacks were because owners think of them as strong dogs and tough guys go and buy pure breds and attack train them, not to mention I've seen many dogs of this breed get abused.

GSDs- Sure Rotties are "more likely to attack" than GSD's, but statistics don't state everything, they don't state WHY it happened they only state what happened.

Rottie/ GSD mix -found this VERY interesting. If rotties are so PRONE to attacking then why do their mixes not do it so much?? Because like I said, a pure bred is bought by some tough guy who wants to make  name for himself, and is then trained to "protect" or "attack" and probably trained in an aggresive way that doesn't go good with the breeds temperament. Mixes are less likely to attack because people don't go an buy a mixed dog to protect their home, it's almost always a pure bred.

Topic: General / Breed specific legislation (BSL), agree or disagree?

I had a friend who had 5 pits that were rescued from horrible conditions. They were the sweetest and coolest dogs I ever met (besides my girl MAya of course), I am against BSL. It's really just ridiculous to make laws against specific breeds. It's basically like dog racism. Like say one race of people commits more crime than the others in a city, so does that mean we should ban them from our city??? NO! Well BSL is basically the same thing.......ridiculous to just assume that every dog of that specific breed is going to attack just because some of them did.

Topic: Health, Diet And Vets / Wellness - dog food

Wellness is one of THE BEST dog foods you can find, even in the holistic pet stores. It is one of the VERY FEW foods that I would actually buy from petco. It is also made by a trustworthy company. Ive done a lot of research on a ton of high quality dog foods and haven't found ANYTHING bad with this company.

The only problem with this food might be that it is too rich for some dogs. But I also know plenty of dogs on this food that are doing AMAZING on it.

Topic: Breeds Club / Wolf a breed?

Your dog looks like a husky to me!! How do KNOW it's a hybrid? Most breeders who breed so called hybrids are lieing about percentages. I doubt he is that high content. Low content maybe.

Topic: Puppies / Don't chase the cats...

We taught Maya to go to her bed when told. Whenever she gets up to chase the cat or bug the cat when she doesn't want to be bothered, Maya is told to go to her bed. She goes to her bed and will sadly sit there and stare at the cat. We are still working on it, because she will just get back up 5 minutes later and go after the cat again, but it seems to be working, and she is starting to get better and better. She's also stopped being so rough when her and the cat play, like she finally understands that the cat is to small to pummel over!!

Topic: Support And Suggestions / Easy Walk Harness

Add: Make sure you stop when he pulls when your walking. Another good technic is to just turn around and go the other direction and make him follow you.

Topic: Support And Suggestions / Easy Walk Harness

Oh the one I use(the one in the picture) has padding on it so that it won't scrape. Have you tried pinch collar? I know a lot of dogs that totally ignore the choke chain but are very obedient with the pich collar. Our old lab used to pull and one little snap with it and she stopped pulling. It was like a miracle, as long as she had the pinch collar on she wouldn't pull. My friends german shepherds(she has 5) don't pull on the pinch collar either. Some people think it sounds mean but it really doesn't hurt them, that is just a misconception.

Topic: Support And Suggestions / Easy Walk Harness

I haven't used that specific harness(it doesn't seem like it would make much difference to me. I use this for Maya: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=3307+4+12052&pcatid=12052 It helps hold her back a bit. She's a real puller and drives me crazy if any other dog barks at her cause she'll just start running and jerking. She does much better on this. It's works better on her than a choke chain did. It's specifically for training so once Maya has learned to walk calmly by other dogs it will be really easy to switch back to just plain collar.
