Topic: Health, Diet And Vets / PET INSURANCE I am thinking about getting pet insurance for the expensive stuff. But if I am paying a monthly fee for two dogs, I would like it to cover preventative also. From what I read VPI doesn't sound too good. I got a quote and it was $33.00 per dog per month. Yikes! I think it was for "full coverage". Like I said I am mainly concerned about going into debt if a life or death situation were to occur. Any updates on this? What companies are recommended? Carla, did you find another company? |

Topic: Advice, Training And Tips / yard behavior Both of my dogs live inside our home. But when they are outside in the fenced in yard for bathroom or playtime, they can get destructive. For example Tonka digs. They both eat sticks and bark and anything that will fit in their mouths. They are not outside for really long periods of time but once they are done playing with each other, the bark eating and hole digging begins. Toys work sometimes, but they would rather eat stuff and mess up the yard. Suggestions? |

Topic: Health, Diet And Vets / senior formula A friend asked me a question and I was not sure of the answer. At what age should you switch your dog to a senior formula dog food? Or is it not necessary? She has a Lab by the way. |

Topic: Health, Diet And Vets / How many feedings a day for Puppies?? My mini schnauzer was fed 3 times a day when he was a pup and the schedule really worked for us. He usually finished his meals. He is old enough now to eat twice a day. My vet told me to do the same with my Big pup - 3 times a day. At least we see that 2 times is not enough for your pup, even if she were larger. |

Topic: Health, Diet And Vets / scabs from puppy biting Haha! That is actually a really good idea! I will buy the widest spike collar I can find and spray it with bitter apple for added protection. The only problem I forsee is that he will still get some scabs because his neck is so long (in my opinion he has a long neck). But, it won't hurt to try! |

Topic: Health, Diet And Vets / scabs from puppy biting They have two rope toys, which they love, but it doesn't always keep them busy. When they play I always tell Archie to go get his toy and they play with it, but as soon as I turn my back, they are wrestling again. The only way to stop it is if I am supervising. Which is fine during the evening, but I work at home during the day, so I can't sit down with them all day. Ahhh! ;) |

Topic: Health, Diet And Vets / scabs from puppy biting Archie and Tonka are getting along well. The problem is that they are constantly playing and Archie has very thin fur so he is getting lots of scabs on his neck. Lots of them. He never seems to mind - no yelping or crying - but I do. I hate to see his neck like that. In fact, Archie wants to play more than Tonka. I bought a hoodie with a drawstring, but it does not cover enough of his neck to protect him. I also cut a sock open and put it on his neck, but it doesn't stay in place, so that doesn't protect him either. If I get him clothing for this purpose I don't want to spend a lot of money because it will be torn in days. The hoodie has holes all in it. Any ideas? |

Topic: Health, Diet And Vets / eating too fast I agree, I found two brands of puppy food with no corn, wheat or soy and they were Expensive. Canidae looks like a good idea, even for our cat who is on Organix because he is allergic to corn, wheat and soy. I think once they finish most of their food that they have now, I will wean both dogs onto Canidae. It will be nice to have the whole pack on the same food. I did not know that puppy food made them grow too fast, but thankfully I switched Archie to adult food early. Thanks for the info and hopefully the change will stop his gas! |

Topic: Health, Diet And Vets / eating too fast On the bag it says the second ingredient is brewers rice (that is wheat right?). The first is chicken and the third is corn gluten meal. Could it be the corn too? You can feel his ribs and there is an indentation at the hips. I got him from a breeder and she used Pro Plan which a lot of breeders use in my experience. From what I am told, it makes them poop less. That is not my main concern, however, it is his over all health. I feed my Miniature Schnauzer Nutro Natural Choice. The first three ingredients are chicken meal, rice flour, and ground rice. He has had no problems with it. He gets 1 cup twice a day (sometimes he doesn't finish) and he is 22 lbs. and totally fit - no fat on him. As far as how much to feed Tonka, I will watch his weight, but for now he looks good. |

Topic: Health, Diet And Vets / eating too fast The vet told me to feed him at least 3 cups a day for now, while he is growing. He was 22 lbs. at 9 weeks. He is 10 weeks now. I am feeding him Pro Plan Large Breed Puppy food. As far as activity - moderate, I guess. He goes on walks and plays with Archie all day. He gets some treats when I am training him, not a lot. The bowls are on a stand, but it is still low to the ground. We have given him a little bit at a time and he eats what we give him just as fast. I will try the tennis ball. |

Topic: Puppies / Cage pooping Due to Archie's separation anxiety, I could not crate him when he was in the house breaking period. He did the same thing. Poop would be all over him and the crate and he didn't care. He was about 4 or 5 months old before I was able to successfully crate him. I had to potty train him using a Time Out method. |

Topic: Health, Diet And Vets / eating too fast I am feeding my Alaskan Malamute puppy about 1 cup of food three times a day. Some times a lil extra. My concern is that he woofs it down in like two bites as if he is not going to eat again for days. Is the typical for the breed? Is there anything I can do to get him to slow down? Could this lead to health problems? I make him sit and wait patiently until I tell him to eat to prevent him from acting crazy at meal time. He also has really bad gas and I don't know if that is from the fast eating. |

Topic: Breeds Club / Alaskan Malamutes No, I don't know anyone who has one of his litter mates. We do have a dog park in our neighborhood, but we are moving in three weeks. After that most of his socialization will be from my mother-in-law's Lab and Jack Russel. And my cousin brings her medium size mix over every now and then. We will find other ways too, I'm sure. I'll keep the bitter apple in mind. |

Topic: Health, Diet And Vets / Fixed today Well as far as remembering what happened... my dog Archie has not liked the vet office since that day. He won't go near anyone or anything. He hides under my chair and resists everything. Last time he was pulled to the scale to get weighed. Before he was fixed all was well at the vet. At home he was back to normal about 2 days after. |

Topic: Advice, Training And Tips / Will my 2 males get along? We are trying to show Tonka that Archie is the Alpha. There is no lack of confidence where Archie is concerned which may get him into trouble one day. So we are making it clear that Archie is # 1 in the daily activities like suggested. I talked to my vet today and he said the fact the he is a puppy and is going to grow up around Archie will make all the difference. Most importantly, he has to know that I am boss. I'll let you know how everything goes! |

Topic: Advice, Training And Tips / revenge defication My dog Archie would do this when he was a puppy. I would lock him in the bathroom and he would poop and smear it everywhere and he was completely potty trained. His problem was severe separation anxiety, which was solved with training and maturity. My new puppy is not yet potty trained and I have to take him out every hour and if goes outside he can be out for an hour, if not he goes in the crate. He usually goes outside and knows what to do as soon as we go out, but he is still having accidents. It just takes time. Just try not to pull your hair out because that is what I feel like doing. |
