Topic: Health, Diet And Vets / How many feedings a day for Puppies??

Good point A6P however i feel that the pups health is more of a concern and housebreaking takes second priority, especially with small breed pups, besides a 2 month old pup doesnt even have all of their shots and shouldnt really be walking around outside...its also hard for most people to put down food several times a day because they work so having a large bowl of some dry kibble out enables the pups to feed whenever needed, and of course you need to leave out water too. Totally agree about the word association though, i use pee pee and poo pee and Bella can go on command, which really comes in handy when theres a bizzard outside :)

Topic: Health, Diet And Vets / How many feedings a day for Puppies??

Wow surprised a Vet would say that especially knowing that small puppies are at risk for a number of health concerns which can result from not being able to much on a few kibbles here and there when needed. Small pups cant hold much food in either so they need to come back several times a day to get their bodies nutritional needs met. Having a puppy is like having an infant, they require a little nutrition in small amounts several times a day, they arent meant to be housebroken so early even though some can actually learn that young, thats why a lot of people start off with wee wee pads or paper becuase its pretty unrealistic to think that a puppy that young will be able to hold it in for a long period of time, just like a baby goes from pampers to potty training. After a couple of months you can create a set feeding schedule that works for both you and your dogs needs but for now do what you felt was right from the start, a mommy always knows best :)

They say that pups should be free fed ~ allowed food at all times but as they get older you can cut that to 3x a day and then down to 2x. Since you have a small breed i recommend that you offer food at least 3x a day. How old is your bindi now?

Topic: Health, Diet And Vets / speying

Bella was spayed at our local Animal Care and Control and they did a great job...in my experience the ACCs, SPCAs and other spay/neuter clinics do just as good of a job as any other Vet if not better because they spend all day, every day doing nothing but these procedures. For example a lot of Vets dont feel comfortable spay/neutering until they are 6 months of age but by then most have already went into heat and or are marking. There was a rule at our ACC...as long as they were 2 pounds and 2 months old they were on that table! Not sure about the costs in your area but that $600 is a high quote and they often add on other things to your bill when your dealing with a private practice, because they know they can get away with it.

Just like to add that you should be able to feel the ribs but not see them. This may be a bit harder to tell on longhaired dogs.

Topic: Health, Diet And Vets / Bloat

Bloat is always a serious condition! Most owners dont realize whats going on with their dogs and bloat is known to kill within 24 hours or less. Elevated food and water bowls are highly recommended. Also try not to feed your dog or offer lots of water within two hours of excersize, either before or after. They have doggie ice cream now and Bella just loves it...im very strict about any people food for many reasons ~you just never know if your dog will be allergic to anything ~most dogs given people food get pickier with time ~not the best thing for their teeth and gums ~some foods upset your dogs intestinal tract/stomach ~offering people food promotes beggers ~with all the dog treats and foods out why offer our food

Topic: Health, Diet And Vets / Cleaning the Ears

Any liquid ear cleaner can be used...they have powder cleaners too but i never thought this was better then the liquid...id sugest using a cotton puff or gauze to clean ears out as ive seen too many Q-tip related ear injuries and actually a few Q-tip heads got stuck inside the canal that had to be removed. Those dogs had to be sedated and the pieces were removed. When their is too much yeast, wax or an ear infection a dog may shake their head constantly and strach which usually causes a hematoma, ive seen some the size of a softball. They will not go down by themselves and need to be drained by a Vet.

Topic: Breeds Club / Boston Terriers

Yeah, the reverse sneezing is very common for bostons and other short snouted breeds although any breed can suffer from these little attacks, it looks a lot worse than it really is though. When Bella goes through one of her attacks i just rub under her neck while streching it up to the sky, then i blow softly on her nose. This action causes her to sniff, which opens up the nasal canal and it stops instantly...i learned this from trying different things myself and apparently by chatting with some other owners, they have learned that same trick. Me and Bella thought we had invented something spectacular!

Topic: Rescues, Shelters And Adoptions / Bella the Bostons contest to help shelter pets...Please help!

We arent sure who is giving others 1 stars but i noticed this early in the contest when Bella went from 1st. place, to the top three, then her average was slowly starting to fall so much, even for Lexi, the same thing was happening or is still happening, not sure anymore because the whole thing was really getting on my nerves so i just stopped reminding my buddies to vote. This is Bellas first contest and who knew this whole thing would be such a big issue! We really dont want to give up for our cause because we know how much our local NYC shelter pets really do need it however i dont feel comfortable spamming others everyday to achieve our goal, now there are some that have other dogs that entered the contest to win money for their friends and that to me is just as bad, im sure these contestants didnt ask these friends to do that but i dont think its fair that any winner should get two prizes. Some people say that this is how these contests are but i dont know it just doesnt seem right to me. Regardless Bella wishes everyone the best of luck.

Meet Bella the Boston ~ AKC Canine Good Citizen, Dog Model, Shelter Pet Advocate Bella’s Story In 2006 A stray Boston Terrier puppy was found on the streets and brought to the NYC Animal Care and Control (The city’s shelter). She was scared, emaciated, showed signs of abuse and clearly was neglected. A kind hearted Veterinary Technician who worked there fell in love with her sweet disposition and had been looking for a Boston to adopt for awhile. It seemed as if it were meant to be… Bella was nursed back to health and thankfully has no health problems. Her mommy spent many hours training and helping her to become the great dog she is today. She has a family that loves her dearly and two human siblings to play with. Bella has many friends that she loves to visit at various dog runs in the boros and loves attending any dog events, contests or celebrations. As you can imagine she likes being in the spotlight and loves posing for pictures. Bella will do anything for attention and praise…Its that which makes Bella so wonderful because her drive to please will stop at nothing. Bella’s mission is to show everyone that even shelter dogs (and other shelter pets) can be winners too! Bella needs every vote she can get for her contest to help shelter pets, she is way behind in votes and some of her competition is cheating and not playing fair :( Please vote daily or whenever possible (the contest ends next month). Lets show these other dogs what Shelter and Rescues dogs can do when we stick together! Bella plans to donate her prize to the NYC ACC shelter, where she came from so she can help dogs and cats that were once just like her. (this link will take you directly to her personal voting page, just click on 5 stars and your done, takes just one second to make a big difference!) http://www.petanim.com/pretty-pearls Thanks so much and lots of love & doggie kisses from Bella
