Topic: Breeds Club / Siberian Huskies

I love northern breeds and special people own Huskies and Mals.  They can be very stubborn and vocal, but that's one of the traits that makes them their own ^..^

Topic: Support And Suggestions / Rainbow Bridge

Is there some way all of us at MDS can be notified when one of our dog pals has passed. Maybe there should be a section for Over the Rainbow Bridge?

Topic: Health, Diet And Vets / PROMERIS FLEAT & TICK WARNING

I have used Frontline for several years, but, I don't use it every month.  I personally don't think it's not a good idea to use it 12 months, unless you are in an area where these alot of ticks and fleas.  My dogs have never gotten a tick from out backyard.  Fleas are another story, rabbits, squirrels, mice, raccoons, etc. carry many parasites, and that's how most dogs get them.  However, recently, I've been walking them and I found a tick crawling on Sarah.  I quickly administered the Frontline.  I found dead ticks, this is disgusting, but on our bedspread!  Frontline does work but it takes 48 hours to work.

Topic: Breeds Club / Wolf a breed?

I have met alot of responsible hybrid owners.  I would love to get one, but it's illegal now.  It's a shame irresponsible people always screw it up for the really responsible people.  My sister's hybrid, Sweetie, was the most wonderful hybrid.  She really looked like a wolf!

I'd head for the nearest police station and file a report.  I'd also canvas your neighborhood too!

Topic: Breeds Club / Golden Retrievers

In the past, I actually use to cut my first Golden short for the summer.  The only thing I do now is trim the fur between the toes. If you trim the coat short for the summer, but not too short, I suggest to do it in early May.  By winter, you should have a full coat.

Topic: Health, Diet And Vets / Water Concerns?

What I do is fill up a pitcher of water and let it sit. This will eliminate chlorine as chlorine evaporates. Here in Toms River, NJ water is a major issue because we have several "dump sites."

Topic: Health, Diet And Vets / 6 year old Golden ate a corncob

I had a golden that ate a cooked corn cob and almost died. They don't digest these at all. Luckly he threw it up, after about 5 days. Boy was he sick.

Topic: Advice, Training And Tips / Will my 2 males get along?

Everyone has such good advice. Just let the dice roll and it will sort itself out. But I do suggest to make sure both dogs are neutered. I have 2 females and 1 male...I was told a female Mal will never get along with another female of any type...WRONG.....they are glued at the hip. We call them Tango's harem.

Topic: Rescues, Shelters And Adoptions / 100 Ways To Help A Rescue

That's a great list. We tried adopting another dog recently from the shelter, a 11 year old mixed breed but it didn't work out. We donated a harness and leash, as they didn't have any at the time. Next time I go to BJ's I will pick up a 50lb. bag of Pedigree.

Topic: Health, Diet And Vets / Cleaning the Ears

Everyone has such good advise. I'm glad this topic came up. As for hot spots use any ear cleaner with salicytic (not sure of spelling) acid in it. It clears up the spots in a couple of days without a $150.00 vet bill!!

Topic: Health, Diet And Vets / Cleaning the Ears

Have Goldens over the past 15 years you learn real quick about ears. I've been using Nolvasan Otic cleaning solution for years. Your Vet should show you how to clean them. Also once a week I use Huggies wipes just to clean the inside flap of the ear. I also trim some hair from the inside flaps as well. Getting the ears to dry out prevents earmites which cause Gunky Ear. The Nolvansan solution is falso antastic on hotspots. It dries them up almost overnight!

Marina didn't mind being spayed. She is protective about her food with Tango, Sarah can eat her food with no problem. Marina will snap at Tango, but he doesn't mind - he knows shes bluffing. Marina will actually protect my food from the gang. Aside from the above here's a little tip about going to the vet. Take Parka for more car rides so that he won't associate a car ride means go to the vet. Several banks, drive-in eatings places, etc. actually give out dog cookies. Or, take Parka to a cool dog friendly place.

You are very lucky and Seff is very happy to be who he is. Let's face it, alot of times it's how you raise your dog. My sister's hybrid was a wonderful dog too.

Topic: Breeds Club / Alaskan Malamutes

The more socialization the better. My neighbors bring over their 2 goldens. Sometimes the other neighbor's dogs gets out, and he alway's heads over to my house and scratches to come in (that whole situation in another story). My other neighbor across the way brings her labbie...... Our house always has someone coming over and more or less they have 4 legs instead of 2.

Topic: Breeds Club / Alaskan Malamutes

Most puppies chew......we could have never done Marina on her own as a single dog......the other dogs keep her busy. Yes, we had chewing problems. This will eventually stop. Marina was crate trained. I don't know who did the chewing, but both Marina and Sarah did their share. One thing I tried, is baking soda and water into a muddy mixture and pasting onto surfaces they chewed. The goldens have kept Marina very stimulated. Marina will visit the waste buckets and shred a reminder by Billy's computer station.....just to say...."I'm pissed, when are you guys coming back."

The puppy should do fine. It's the other dog and cat that have to accept the pup. There should be no problem. Marina was introduced into a pack of 2 females and one male adult golden. She was 8 months old, they all did just fine. I am told that introducing another female could have been a problem...but it wasn't.....Our pack is a solid pack right now. I can't introduce another dog yet. But when time comes it will be a puppy male mal.
