Topic: General / Rottweilers are bad and here's proof

What kind of dog turns on their owners?  An untrained dog.  Wild = untrained.

Topic: General / Rottweilers are bad and here's proof

I gotta tell ya, Sandi, you’re a much bigger person than I am.  Not physically bigger!  I mean bigger in the sense that I commend you for being able to step back and say the right thing.  I’ve started several replies to this but no matter what I try to say, it comes off as lashing out at a 15-year old know-it-all.  No point in that really…. it’s just anger caused by ignorance, and as of right now, I can’t get over it long enough to say anything that isn’t rude.  Thanks for saying what I don’t have the guts to.

Sorry Emily- you’re wrong on this one.  It’s not good to generalize, no matter what.  You should think again before you go out and say this kind of stuff, especially to a group of dog lovers that can and will tell you otherwise.   You’ll make a lot of enemies, really fast.  Do you think a certain race of people are bad because they have a higher rate of violence?  Discrimination is against the law in the human world, what you are doing is the same thing.

Topic: General / Move to Hawaii

I don’t know any details, but I’ve heard that you can’t just take a pet to Hawaii… you have to have detailed vet records, certain shots are required, and worst of all, you have to have them quarantined for a certain amount of time.  You have to start planning at least 120 days ahead- records must be provided.  If you have all your ducks in a row 120 days ahead, the quarantine can be as short as 5 days.  If you don’t have your ducks in a row, the quarantine can be up 120 days, which sounds like about the same amount of time you’ll be gone.  I’m not exactly sure how this works, but if you’re not moving there permanently, it seems like an awful lot of grief to put the dog through (and you)... I personally would keep trying to find a place for him on the mainland…  Google something like “taking a pet to Hawaii”- I’m positive there’s more to it than just making him comfortable for the trip.

Topic: Health, Diet And Vets / Hartz medicine

I would think if you could get a free legal consultation, it’d be worth it… though I’d hesitate to start paying an hourly fee if you can’t find a free consultation.  I don’t know the first thing about doing stuff like that, but I’d be super PO’ed if that happened to my dog and I’d sure be tempted to take legal action.  Is she allergic to something in it, or is this common for Hartz?  Either way, I’m glad to know it happened… it’s often tempting to pick some of that up when I see it, now I most definitely never will.  So if in the end, you don’t get anything out of this, at least be comforted knowing you spread the word and helped prevent it happening to another dog!  That won’t pay your vet bill, but it’s sure worth something.

Topic: Advice, Training And Tips / The Debarking Advocates

I can’t believe someone even thought this was worth discussing.  What parts could we remove from the abuser that would do this to a dog?  Hmmm…. an eye for an eye would mean voice box removal, but the idea here is to cut off the ability to communicate, so lets go for the fingers… yeah, that should do it… I’m so sad to know that people with ideas like this even exist.  Let’s get the forums back to their intended use… I’m getting really annoyed.

It’s hard enough to sift through the forums without 6 topics all giving the same lousy message, which isn’t even allowed on this site.  By the way doglovers- that’s a really nice profile you’ve set up, do you even have a dog?

Topic: Support And Suggestions / dogs and the right one for you!

Well there are lots of rescue organizations that you may want to consider!  Your best bet though might be to just go to your local shelter and “save” a dog from there.  Since you’re in a relatively small place, you might want to consider adopting a dog that’s not a puppy, maybe you could find one that’s nice and mature and calm and won’t destroy your apartment during puppyhood.  I’m sure some others could do a better job of suggesting a breed… personally, I’m a big fan of the common all American Mutt.  You can find one with a personality that you love, and you don’t have to spend a fortune!

As for your question, should I even get a dog?  If you believe that you’re mature enough to make sure he’ll always have food and water and get enough exercise, and you can afford healthcare when he needs it, I would say absolutely yes.  I believe pets should be part of every childhood because there’s so much you can learn from having a pet, but only in a situation where they’ll get appropriate care.  A dog will be your best friend!  But you have to remember it’s a huge responsibility- sometimes I feel like I have a kid, not a dog.  It’s a big commitment and something to really consider before making a decision, and I commend you for asking questions before just jumping in and bringing home the first cute face you see.  In addition to the 20 minute daily walk, your dog will likely need to go out first thing in the AM to go potty, and depending on the dog, may need another trip or 2 outside each day for a potty break.  I live in a 2-bedroom apartment so I don’t have a fenced yard, so I have to put my dog on his leash and go with him everytime, wait till sniffs around and finds JUST the right place, then he’ll go… it gets really annoying, especially when it’s early AM and I’m late for work.  Not to mention having to pick it up afterwards.  But you can get past these things- it’s all worth it to me… but things you should consider before you make a decision.  Good luck… let us know what you decide, and ask all the questions you want… this site is a great place to find the information you need!

Topic: Support And Suggestions / New BFF pal feature

Hey- I was wondering…. I have too many BFFs and don’t always want to scroll through my entire list of pals to find dogs that aren’t on my BFF list- is there a way I can put my main list in order so that those dogs are towards the front of my list?

That’s so sad, and yet so touching!  I have a little dog friend who’s Mom is battling terminal cancer.  She has doggie depression.  What’s worse, this will be the second Mom she’s lost.  She’s an 11-year old shi-tzu named Minnie.  We’re trying to do what we can for her, but you just can’t blame her for being so sad.  There’s absolutely no doubt in my mind that pet’s grieve and mourn for lost humans, just as much as we do for them.

Topic: General / profiles not loading?

Nadia-  I’ve had a lot of problems seeing several profiles, including my own sometimes… but today, I can actually see yours.  Not at first though- I get the scrolling green bar, then if I click on something else- either your photos or a blog or something, then come back to main screen, your barks show up… that’s how I get my own to show up too.  It just scrolls and scrolls, so I click on one of my blogs, then click on my main profile photo, and suddenly everything appears fine!  Maybe you’ve tried that, but it’s a trick that seems to work for me.

Topic: Support And Suggestions / Members flagged?

I think I may have just pulled a Swalburn… I was leaving a bark for Tucker and Sasha and suddenly saw the red box at the top saying the member has been flagged, but I swear I never even hit the button!  Or maybe it was indicating that MY profile has been flagged?  I don’t know… but whatever the situation, it was a mistake!  I hope nobody flagged my profile anyway… I don’t think there’s anything on there offensive, other than pictures of Olie with a CAT!  Anyhow, Hershey, if I mistakenly flagged Tucker and Sasha, please disregard it!  I might leave ya a bark on your site too.  Thanks!

Topic: General / profiles not loading?

I’m still having all these problems too- I cannot load certain people’s pages, including Astrid, Monty, Parker, and some others, no matter how long I wait.  But the bigger problem is that I don’t get the options at the top of the bark box- the html button.  I have learned to work around this, but it takes forever and involves multiple programs to resize photos and such, and after I post, I cannot see if it worked right because people’s pages won’t load!  The scrolling green bar has become my enemy.

Any maybe you’re all aware of this and I just haven’t searched around enough to find the discussion, but that’s because it’s making me crazy- are we moving a little slow today??

I live with 4 cats and they all have MyCatSpace.  It is likely that they are invading Olie and causing these problems.

Topic: Support And Suggestions / HOW TO INSERT PICTURES, GRAPHICS, & MUSIC ON YOUR PAGE

Same way!  If you go into your “edit profile” mode, you can simply paste the code wherever you want to place a picture.  “The code” is as described above by Monty- it usually starts with “a ref”,  or something like that… it’s generated by PhotoBucket or Blingee automatically once you have your photo uploaded and saved.  Once you have that code, you can paste it anywhere you want- in a bark, a blog, on your profile… etc.  Feel free to ask any of us if you need help!  Monty is especially good at stuff like this, I can help through the basics…

Topic: General / MY PUPS ARE GONE!!!

Any luck yet? Hopefully they’ll come home… are they microchipped? Do they have on collars with tags? Keep an eye out at your local shelters, if someone picked them up and didn’t know where they came from, they may have “turned them in” hoping the owners would come claim them. Many shelters have on-line lists with pictures of pets recently brought in. Put up signs around your neighborhood, talk to your neighbors, this really does work. I lost a cat once and put up signs and my phone was ringing off the hook…it still took 3 weeks to track him down but people notice these things. Your pups know where home is, they won’t go far. I know this is a terrible experience for you… hang in there and do all you can. Please keep us posted.

Topic: Support And Suggestions / Where do you spend the doggie dollars????

Yeah, someone spent doggy dollars on those dogs. You can either buy presents for yourself, or you can buy them for your friends! And of course your friends might buy them for you, in which case a present will suddenly appear on your page! When you click on your piggy bank, there is an option towards the top of the page that allows you to send the presents to your friends. The Easter eggs were a limited time offer available only at Easter time, they were just 5 bucks. Olie has one on his site- Abigail sent it to him for Easter. I’ve also noticed that a lot of dogs have automatically gotten presents- Hershey must have bought them for us- for dogs that have more than 50 pals, and dogs that are members of the Lovers Not Fighters group.
