Topic: Puppies / Staffie puppy & German sheperd puppy. What happens in your house will be totally up to you. Are you expecting trouble? If so, there will be trouble. As long as you have a good leadership established, there will not be any problems, besides normal siblings squabbles, which is your responsibility to take care of. |

Topic: Puppies / Help Me With My Cocker Spaniel How old is this dog? Fixed yet? How are your walks? How do you feed him? You may need to start very slow, and hand/spoon feed the dog as a reward for sitting, responding to his name, etc, you have control over the food, if he growls, food goes away for a few mins, then you try again.. Don't just feed him because it is dinner time. Make sure he knows that you are "allowing" him to eat because you are in control, not because you feel bad.The mother has the say so over when pups eat/nurse, leader of pack eats 1st, then allows others. The dog needs to respect you, and obviously doesn't see you as an authority figure, therefore does as he pleases, not what is expected of him. Search for a good obedience club, and start building a "trusting" relationship, don't reward bad behavior. |

Topic: Health, Diet And Vets / What do you use for canine arthritis? Here are a few "holistic" approaches Treatments for Arthritic Pain in Dogs The following suggestions are for a large dog, approximately 85-100 lbs. If your dog is smaller or larger you will need to adjust the amounts accordingly. The following supplements may be started immediately and given every day: Vitamin C Very good for the dog regardless of what is wrong, and sometimes very useful for joint pains; a natural anti-inflammatory. Start slowly with 500 mg/day and add another 250 mg every three days until you are giving 3000 mg/day. If at any time you notice diarrhea or loose stools, back the dosage down, wait several days, and then try to increase it again. Vitamin E A natural anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory, used successfully in large doses to treat German Shepherd Dogs with a neurological condition called Degenerative Myelopathy. Give 400 IU/day. To read more about Degenerative Myelopathy click here. Alfalfa An herb that contains many minerals, aids digestion, and is a natural anti-inflammatory. Looks like green powder. Use half the human dose, and open up the capsule to sprinkle over food. Alternatively, you can purchase it in bulk in one pound lots. Use about a teaspoon a day. Fish oil Not the same thing as cod liver oil, this is fish body oil, and contains essential fatty acids that benefit dogs (and people!) enormously. You can buy this in capsule form. You need to poke a hole in the capsule and squeeze it out. You can also buy it in liquid form and pour about a teaspoon over the food. Gradually increase to a tablespoon, over a period of several days. After you are doing the above, start one of the supplements below in addition. Try one thing at a time and give several weeks before deciding if it works. If you do not see any improvement, then you can try something else on the list. If you do them all at once, it costs more money and you will never know which one of these things is the one that is helpful for your particular dog. Choose from the following list: Glucosamine/Chondroitin very successful in treating arthritic pains in humans and dogs. Widely available. Look for a brand that contains magnesium and vitamins C & D, which enhance the body’s ability to absorb and utilize the beneficial glucosamine. Some brands also contain herbal factors that further increase the product’s efficacy. You may see results in a week or two, or it could take longer. Dose: 3 pills (500 mg each) per day—2 in the morning and one at night Glycoflex You can get this from a vet, or mail order it from pet catalogs. It is made out of something called green lipped mussels (Perna canaliculus) and smells very fishy, but dogs love the taste. Follow instructions on the label. Many people have success with this for dogs with hip dysplasia. Yucca An herb that contains natural steroids to reduce pain and inflammation in joints. You can buy it as a powder or in drops, called a tincture, from a health food store. If you buy capsules (powder), open them up and sprinkle on the food. Follow the label and use half the dose for humans. Do not use for more than two weeks at a time, then stop for a week, then start up again. MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane) Another anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory used for joint pains. Is is also good for the skin and hair. Comes in capsules, it is a powder. Open the capsule and sprinkle over food. Use one capsule per day. Devil’s Claw An herb often combined with Yucca. Anti-inflammatory, for joint pains. Powder or liquid, use half the human dose and open up the capsules. Nettle another herb for arthritis Dandelion another herb for arthritis, usually combined with something else. If you'd rather use a pre-mixed product, specifically formulated for pets, you may find the following links helpful: Enhance Arthritis/Joint Aid for Dogs, Unique, effective custom blend of completely natural, human-grade ingredients. Developed by Aunt Jeni and her team of Animal Science Researchers, to give your pet a well rounded defense against the pain and immobility associated with arthritis, hip dysplasia, and many other debilitating joint conditions. Veterinarian approved formula is even tasty enough to make administration a breeze--your dog will think this is a treat! ARTHRIX for dogs and cats provides essential building blocks for the synthesis of cartilage and the fluids surrounding joints, thereby improving joint mobility. It also contains natural anti-inflammatory agents which work together to stimulate your pet's own healing system. Winston's Joint Formula is a combination of three totally-natural whole food supplements developed by a Naturopathic Doctor for his own dog. No drugs. No side-effects because it's all just good whole food. No dosage problems because the body uses only what it needs. And now, with the latest product release, the formula is showing results that are even more remarkable. |

Topic: Health, Diet And Vets / Turkey Warning This thread was about turkey, which is a great thread for the general/novice owner, don't do anything that you might be uncomfortable with, but don't let that stop you from being an informed consumer, and hopefully people will read this thread and "investigate" turkey a little bit more. The turkey I feed my dogs/cats is a combination of skinless turkey necks and boneless/skinless turkey thighs along with veggies and fruit all ground up, sometimes a turkeyneck/or ostrich neck just for dinner.Cats will get a chicken neck for dinner. Have a blessed day |

Topic: Health, Diet And Vets / Turkey Warning This is what I found online yesterday: www.itchmo.com Lab Reports Acetaminophen In Eagle Pack Senior Dog Food Posted Wednesday, November 7th, 2007 in News for Cats, Dogs & Owners, National Dog, Cat & Pet Info, Dogs, Cats, Pet Food Recalls & Safety By Emily Huh Expertox, a Texas lab, tested an unopened, original package of Eagle Pack Holistic Select Senior Care Formula for Senior Dogs. The lab reported that the sample of dog food tested positive for acetaminophen. The sealed bag of Eagle Pack Holistic Select Senior Care Formula for Senior Dogs had the best if fed by date of: 0549 P2 10 JUL 08. A pet owner and a small pet store owner sent the bag of Eagle Pack dog food to Expertox after her dogs experienced symptoms when eating Eagle Pack, and she also received complaints from customers using Eagle Pack. Symptoms from both her dogs and customers’ dogs included vomiting, diarrhea, itching, eyes swelling, hives, conjunctivitis, tremors, and some unexplained aggression. She then contacted Eagle Pack and said they told her that problems with Eagle Pack were only coming from her store. They said the itching was probably caused by the dogs going into the ocean and not getting the salt/sand out of their coats or that people were not rinsing their dogs completely after a bath. Eagle Pack came by her store to obtain samples in mid-August, and she said she has still not received test results from them. She then contacted the FDA, and an agent come by three times to obtain samples and unopened bags of dog food. She said she hasn’t hear anything back from the FDA either. Topic: Health, Diet And Vets / Turkey Warning Correct me if I am wrong, But wasn't eagle pack just in a recall for having Acetaminophen/Tylenol? In their dog food? I can understand if you feel very confident in a product, but please place all facts for the public to examine. I feed my guys a Raw Turkey diet (with the proper amount of veggies/fruits) and they are thriving on it, cats and dogs alike (proper ratios per species). I just don't think "Turkey" is bad to feed, it depends on what type of turkey product you are feeding and how much and is it balanced. |

Topic: Health, Diet And Vets / How to tell if a dog is overweight? Hello all, it's been awhile but Merlin just got finished singing to "Santa" as he rode by tonight, anyway, you should be able to look straight down on your dog and see a "waistline" or a "tuck" on short hair dogs you should be able to see their last rib bone, because it will go into that "tuck" from the side, but regardless of hair, you should be able to see a type of waistline (at the waist-line area) my 11yr old has a waist-line at the base of her tail LOL she is very over weight and her hip joints are feeling the pain of great over eating. We are working on it (she is not happy about being on a diet) but... Daily walks and actually weighing/monitoring your pets daily intake (including treats) treats do count count as added calories, will help them in the long run, just like it should work for us. LOL |

Topic: Health, Diet And Vets / Turkey Warning Not sure I understand what you mean about "A Chemical" in a Turkey? Growth hormones? Something injected after slaughter? I feed raw, and only non-steroidal/hormonal meats, so I am not sure what you are talking about. If there was a recall, it should've been done by now. Please let me know more. Thanks |

Topic: Health, Diet And Vets / Turkey Warning The warning from your vet, was it about "cooked turkey and bones" or about RAW turkey meat? Or was it more about humans over-doing a dogs meal? Please clarify, because I have learned that raw turkey meat and/or neck bones are not that fatty, but higher in protein/ lower in fat just like Emu/Ostrich, then most meats. Thanks for the info Carla |

Topic: Advice, Training And Tips / My dog is perfect, but not really... How do you discipline Buddy? Is he perfect when you are at home? If he is, then he should be perfect when you are away. You stated that you were not fond of crates, maybe they haven't made a size large enough for you to be comfortable in (I used to hide in them when I was a kid, but they are too small for me now, dogs got all the attention then and I felt like I didn't get any, so I acted like a dog when I was younger), but we are not speaking of you/me, we are speaking of BUDDY!!!! And as an owner/caretaker you SHOULD be making the decisions. Buddy shouldn't be making the decisions. Either live by his rules, or MAKE YOUR OWN RULES! |

Topic: Puppies / Tips for training- By Jake Why would your mommy leave you outside all day? I used to have accidents in the house, but I learned what was expected of me, and I grew up. It can get very hot up here in the summer, very cold in the winter, but my mommy would never leave me outside in the weather. I had to learn rules/boundaries/limitations as a puppy and now I am A happy, healthy, productive member of society. I wish you luck-Merlin |

Topic: Health, Diet And Vets / Help me get rid of lucky's mange I emailed a friend of mine who has a degree in animal nutrition and she had this to offer: Like you already said, a good diet will do the most good, but it will take time. Probably frequent, smaller meals all day long will help. For supplements I would do oil for the skin/coat. Vit C is a great choice, b/c it will boost the immune system and also helps with collagen formation (for skin) and wound healing. Digestive enzymes and probiotics will help enhance the body's ability to digest and absorb nutrients so it can heal more quickly. Yogurt will give probiotics, just not as concentrated as in supplement form. Probably an all purpose vit/min would be good as well. I would look for something with biotin and zinc included, since those are good for the skin and coat. Tell her to add one thing at a time, maybe a day apart, just in case something triggers a reaction. And if she makes her own food, go for fatty hamburger, or something higher in fat, but not too much so it doesn't cause digestive upset. We hope this is helpful |

Topic: Health, Diet And Vets / Help me get rid of lucky's mange Just like Tina stated, a very healthy diet (not generic kibble/wet food) but something HEALTHY, will be 1 of the best weapons, he has been starved and will probably eat anything right now, as underweight and neglected as he is,has compromised his immune system. I would find the best food around (search the internet and read some other posts here on diets/kibble) give a vitamin c pill (500mg) 2x a day (we take vitamin c to help boost our immune system), plain yogurt (with live cultures) , and raw egg (including shell lots of calcium in the shell) and have patience. Good luck and keep us posted as to results |

Topic: Health, Diet And Vets / Science Diet and Vets? It is not really common knowledge, most people accept the opion of their doctor because ... he/she is a doctor and must have more knowledge the we do. Yes it is akin to what you stated, But pet food is different then Human food/medicine. They can get away with alot more and most people don't care, because it is "just a pet", especially since pets aren't pets all over the world, there are way lower restrictions on many things, 1 includes pet food and health care. The people who "police" pet food are very slim, and a person on "death row" will eat better then your pet, and have better medical care then your pet. AAFCO (association of american feed control) feeding tests, require the MINIMUM requirements be met for a dog/cat/animal food. As long as the pet in testing doesn't die, during their 8 month test, the food is pretty much available for sale nationwide. The test doesn't look long term (health problems, allergies, etc..) just that their blood test are pretty much stable. AAFCO makes a profit, the manufactuer makes a profit, the distributor makes a profit and the store makes a profit. I was a vet tech for quite a few years, and loved what I did, but hated the profit "push" Money is made in all aspects of life, all I can tell tou is if it really bothers you, do more research and make your own decisions. Ask your vet why he thinks that prescription food is so much better, push his buttons. You are paying for his/her time and opion, get your moneys worth! Ask all these questions to your vet |

Topic: Health, Diet And Vets / Science Diet and Vets? You are slowly killing your dog!!!! Ingredients Brewers Rice, Died Egg Product, Pork Fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols and citric acid), Natural Flavor, Soybean Oil, Powdered Cellulose, Dicalcium Phosphate, Fish Oil, Potassium Chloride, vitamins (L-Ascorbyl-2-Polyphosphate (source of vitamin C), Vitamin E Supplement, Niacin, Thiamine Mononitrate, Vitamin A Supplement, Calcium Pantothenate, Biotin, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin, Folic Acid, Vitamin D3 Supplement), Calcium Carbonate, Vitamin E Supplement, Choline Chloride, Iodized Salt, Taurine, preserved with Mixed Tocopherols, Citric Acid & Ethoxyquin, minerals (Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Copper Sulfate, Manganous Oxide, Calcium Iodate, Sodium Selenite), Beta-Carotene, Rosemary Extract. I have no clue what most most of these ingredients are, much less how to pronounce them, definitely not "natural" dog/cats/ferrets are not meant to eat this crap. Incase you did not hear about the RECALL, Science diet along with Waltham (Banfield's RX diet-Royal Canin) where both in the recall and manufactured by the same company that manufactures dog food for Dollar General and Mal Wart. If you read the ingredient list for the science diet "prescribed" by you vet, did you google each ingredient? find out exactly what they are? Look that item up on the USDA website? how long does it take your dog to digest and utilize that ingredient? What benefits does your dog receive from that ingredient?Does your dog really need it? Or is that ingredient just a "filler" a cheap, inexpensive item for that manufacturer to make a huge profit? These are questions you need to ask yourself. If you don't like what you find out in research, then look for alternatives, holistic and or raw foods, make your own food at home (with proper research/supplements) FIND A DIFFERENT VET!!!! Modern medicine is wonderful to a point, those dr's don't spend that much money for school, to make very little. Just do some more research, and then alittle more. I work for a top raw pet food manufacturer, I am not here to drum up business, not everyone who loves their pet can afford this type of food, some people are uncomfortable feeding it, but there are alternatives to the "generic dog/cat kibble" And if you do research on your dogs "ailment" or that ailment for humans, you may be able to fix your own food. Just keep the diet simple, for humans as well as pets. Variety is good and a balance of meat/veggies/fruit, the same for us. I wish you the best of luck |

Topic: Advice, Training And Tips / Should a dog defend owner? Tina, Merlin ALREADY passed the ATTS, evaluation, but because he is a Rottweiler (not rockwilder) he would probably have a "DEATH SENTENCE" if something happened. Civil suits happen all the time, a guy "BREAKS into your house, and gets hurt by your TV, Glass, your gun. If he survives, he will SUE you for lord knows what. But it does happen. Ihave/am doing everything I know possible to keep my "babys GOOD NAME" He is AKC pointed (towards his Chanpionship) but he also has these titles.. Belcantos Excalibur Von Schauer RN (rallly novice/some obedience) TT (American temperment test society) He is a STABLE DOG, CGC, (Canine Good Citizen), just what it explains, he is a well behaved dog in public, and he also has the title of TDI (THERAPY DOGS INTERNATIONAL) He is so well behaved he goes to Nursing Homes/childrens hospital and visits with the residents. He is not "granted" anything because he is a "GOOD DOG" He is being persecuted, either for his breed, or because of his the race of his owner. Titiles are "EXTREMELY" Great, PLEASE PURSUE THEM , eventually they help. most of the tests are the same ones police dept use Look online and utilize the same stuff, be prepered, be assertive!!!! |

Topic: Advice, Training And Tips / Should a dog defend owner? Thanks for you reply Kat, Merlins breeder works dispatch for the Maryland State Police, and said the same exact things, "Don't ever let him bite someone", no matter what the police report may say, in the media and law suit, it will be "Another Vicious Dog attack", and she preached about "Never leave him in the yard alone" I hate living this way, but I do worry more about keeping him safe then me. But we will not be bullied to walk in our neighborhood. I take him to my mom's neighborhood (10 miles away) to "road work" him, jog about 1-2 miles next to the car, but Jewell and myself need exercise as well. Another friend, member of my obedience club, rottweiler owner, and police officer, gave me some other advice and has offered to come and "walk our dogs together". She also told me, no matter how "minor" an incident may be, to call and report it so everything is "OFFICIALLY" documented, and keep reporting, but they (breeder and cop) also said to keep Merlin as active in the community as possible as the wonderful ambassador of the breed that he is. We just got our Therapy dog certification not too long ago, and have our 1st hospital visit this weekend. When the police come out to investigate things, they are always intimidated by his presence, but since they don't act "threating" he doesn't respond that way. he usually starts sniffing pockets looking for treats, or jumps on the cop car door and gives kisses. He is the most level headed dog I have known for a long time, and I won't let him get into a situation that would cause him harm. I am looking into all legal aspects of things, and taking as many "precautions" as possible. But when someone "threatens" harm to your dog, then "spits" on them, it is very difficult to be "CIVIL". Hopefully I will find good, quite times to walk again, but who knows? I will start to take a small video camera with me as well as pepper spray. |

Topic: Advice, Training And Tips / Should a dog defend owner? While on a walk an hour ago, some wannabe thugs, started talking trash as they walked up on me and my dogs (there was an incident last month with one of them, police were called (not by me) but they think I called because I told police what I saw, and also ran after 1 of them so police could find him) but the one who CROSSED the STREET and got a few feet away from tonight, I have never seen, she just wanted to start trouble, and when I 1st heard their mouths yapping, they were talking about kicking the dog in the nose, anyway when the girl crossed the street and tried to get in my face, Merlin, my rottie, started to lunge at her, but I pulled him back and tighted up the lead because I knew what he was gonna do. She never threw a punch or pulled a gun/knife, next time who knows? Does anyone know legalities if a dog defends an owner? Can't bad guys sue for the bad outcomes of their actions? What would you do if you felt threatened and your dog wanted to protect you? Let the dog protect? Or keep the dog safe (for the time being)? I am still very shooken up, he has calmed down, the police were called, but I don't even know exactly were these people live and they know EXACTLY were I live, have done damage to the house last month. This will be a long night |

Topic: Health, Diet And Vets / Kennel Cough While I was a vet Tech, we had quite a few cases of vacinated dogs, come back to the office "kennel cough", and they had a bloody stool as well as the cough, which was treated a little differently. Maybe they stayed longer then a weekend, who knows, but I have noticed in my area, that boarding kennels now ask that a dog be vaccinated (for kennel cough) more then 2 weeks prior to boarding, or they won't be accepted. I only do the injectable, for my dog because we are in training for tracking and I don't want any "DRUGS" up his nose. But when Merlin caught it, he was at an outdoor show, not a kennel, and you never know what may cause a dog to be susceptible to it. Just like a human to the "FLU" Alot of times people don't want to give "money" back to the same vet that was suppossed to "protect" their dog against a certain "VIRUS" and most people don't read the fine print as to how a VET is not responsible, just like the dog food companies.... |

Topic: Puppies / Food agression in pups I believe it is bad to have aggression in any form, be it food, toy, space or attention. It (aggression) has to be nipped in the bud, or you will have unwanted problems later in life. So many people make the mistake of "letting" a puppy get away with a "growl" (over what, it doesn't matter) once that GROWL happens and you don't correct for it, you have lost the battle. "It was cute when he was 5-20lbs" the dog thought different, he thought "what easily trained humans I have" and as he grows larger, the humans don't think the "little growl" is cute any more, but now are terrified, and turn the "CUTE PUPPY" over to be euthanized because they have a problem with discipline, not the dog, if the dog (cute puppy) was taught discipline, there would be no problem now. If you let 1 aggression go as "OK" other aggressions will follow, just the nature of the beast. Not only with food dish, but treats as well. How many of you can give a treat (pig ear, bone, rawhide etc.) and take it away with 1 command? If you can't, then you need to work on things. Any time a refuses a command, it is a type of aggression. Please take all things into consideration! |
