Topic: Health, Diet And Vets / New Vet Howdy all, I'm looking for a new vet in the Prince William area of VA.
I'd like to find one that is pro-titer and less heavy on the drug courses, I don't totally discredit the drug companies as they do work miracles I can personally attest to but it bothers me that the options are never explained and the idea of, "your dog needs this, this and this" just doesn't hold with information I have read and trusted sources have told me.
The main reasons are the vet I have been using since I was old enough to own a dog just doesn't feel the same, this is a busy place and I'm sure it isn't intentional on part of the doctors and staff and more my own issues. I don't expect my dogs to be coddled but I don't like feeling like I'm taking a number and waiting for my pizza to be ready. The doctors seem to be turning over at a quick rate to and that has me wondering. I've had a couple of other issues but my intention here isn't to blame but to look forward.
I'm probably not a real good customer when it comes to this, my dogs are a part of my family so I read a lot and ask a lot of questions which to some professionals is a big no-no.
I'd like to find a nice stable practice with doctors that have been there for awhile, if anyone has any info please respond.
Thanks,
the human |

Topic: General / MICHAEL VICK SENTENCE FAIR?: “Animal cruelty” I think this started out being a general "hey what do you think" type of post but a lot of undertones have arisin.
Maybe god does want us to forgive, maybe not I don't know he hasn't told me and I'm not that presumptious. I do know a few things about history though and I hope nobody reading this is insecure enough to view this as a personal insult.
From roughly 400 a.d. to the late 18th century one religion killed and tortured hundred of thousands of people.
If you were black in the USA prior to the civil war there was no chance you would ever have millions of $ in NFL contracts, you would be lucky to still be alive past a good working age.
There used to be lots of dog fighting and yup it still does go on today but unlike the claim there is a decline and efforts to end this are "beefed up".
There are many more examples of cruelty done by the hands of humans but society is moving away from that, god did not intervene, there were no swarm of locusts that decended on the clergy responsible for the witch hunts, no random lightning struck down the slave owners and KKK members. Society decided this isn't right and as a society together we decided will no longer stand for this crap.
Perhaps it makes for a nice quiet life to say we are supposed to forgive and lay the issue to a higher power and maybe we are, but personally I'm happy to be on the side that says this isn't how we act anymore and if someone CHOOSES to continue the barbaric rituals that as a society we have condemmed then you are punished.
Once again, personally I choose to have faith as opposed to presumption that in the end as a society judged on a whole is doing much better and this is due to not putting up with these actions.
And for the record if I passed Vick walking up the road in the rain and there was a shaggy wet mutt on the other side of the road I'd pick up the mutt and with any luck have good timing with a large puddle.
In the 7th century to send a message of justice the violator would be dismembered and body parts sent to different castles within a kingdom.

Topic: General / MICHAEL VICK SENTENCE FAIR?: “Animal cruelty” "extremely unfair"? He got the maximum sentence, this was predetermined and in the books long before he was even caught so this is the same thing as saying someone raping a child that gets the maximum is "extremely unfair" because they are human and humans make mistakes. Since my dogs are like my kids I consider it a fair comparison. Why did he get the max? Because he had probation violations, drug violations and he was caught lying, NOT because he is who he is, or was.
The courts did not say he can't play football anymore for the rest of his life, thats NFL's choice and I don't think anyone said he is definatly out for life.
The reason I think most people, even those without animals are screaming that he should be extremely punished is because he once was a role model, he chose to ignore the laws, he chose to have the ethics of a commen thug, he ignored his fans and millions of kids that wanted to be just like him. He chose all this and HE ruined his life, not the courts and not the NFL.

Topic: Advice, Training And Tips / A bit OVERWHELMED... Advice? The third paragraph of your original post tells all, "intelligent and playful". Thats a great combination but also a great test on you.
The advice here is good and it sounds like you are making good progress and I guess the only reason I'm posting is to say that Buddy was almost the same way when I first adopted him, one day dog from hell, next day well mannerd and calm. The only thing I can figure is that dogs are like kids and smart dogs are like smart kids, they want to see how far they can push us and at 18 months he is finding out where he stands in the pack.
Best of luck and congradulations on your new pup!

Topic: Media / Expert observations on 'Animal Rights' breeding agendas by a fur-dog owner of respect
"People are trying to discredit his ideas without talking about his ideas. They are trying to do it by attacks on the person who is stating them. In logic, that is known as the illogic of an ad hominum attack."
I've never seen where any of your, I mean, his ideas were open to discussion. Any contrary ideas, or alternative, less extreme alternatives are met with name calling, fanatical references, more lengthy rhetoric, defensiveness, wordplay, much self promotion and arrogance, and then you call them attacks. Really open for discussion eh?
Some people have the idea that "rights" can supercede respect and should be used every opportunity, these people are the enemy of the same rights they are trying to defend. If you fart in church enough, sooner or later they will make it illegal to do so. Sorry, it's the only analogy I could come up with.

Topic: Advice, Training And Tips / Dog hates big men? Your analysis of the situation is good, perhaps he was abused in the past and was not socialized well as a pup. This was the case with Buddy when I first adopted him. It will take some time but the only thing that will help is lots of exposure, we go to Petsmart and explain to others what we are doing and people are more then happy to help usually. Make sure when you do the socializing that you meet the new people (big guys) ahead of your dog, show him that you (the pack leader) are not afraid and that you are handling things as the leader. Good luck to you |

Topic: Media / Barbarity At Animal Shelter Key To Kern County Spay/Neuter Law Debate If I remember right Winograd promotes no kill? This is a great idea and this guy does have a brain, he used to have a radio show. While no-kill is a step in the right direction theres a big difference between surviving and actually living, I've no doubt you've been to some overcrowded no kill shelters and the animals, while alive, the animals aren't really doing a whole lot of living. The problem still lies in there being to many animals for responsible families to love and care for them, most of us here treat our pets as family but there are many, many owners that do not know of the consequences, don't care about them, or are just plain defiant to the issues of overbreeding. I have no beef with responsible breeders, this you know but when you read of trailers with over 300 dogs living in them, starved dogs rotting in pens (I have pictures), bitches with their uterus falling out dying in agony not being treated because financially they are useless now doesn't come from those responsible breeders, these problems come from those people that are abusive to their "rights". While most here know my views, I'll make it plain for those who don't know me. I think every dog should have a place in a family and you treat the dog as a family member, it's that simple. It is "alarmist" to think that one day SWAT teams will storm my humble dwelling to seize my family members but if they do I'll be dead before they take them but there will be a couple of them hurting also. Sorry for the pointless comment there, the point is and I'll get a pic of it tomorrow if I can. When you see signs that say "shepperd puppies for sale" every six months on the street corner, you can bet one out of five of each litter will never find it's home and there is a unhealthy bitch around. Thats probably a conservative guess. Some type of intervention in that area would not hurt, or hurt the rights of responsible owners. Sometimes a little sacrifice is needed for the better of the whole. |

Topic: Media / Barbarity At Animal Shelter Key To Kern County Spay/Neuter Law Debate Don't put words in my mouth, and drop the name calling. It's very childish, and I don't recall "spewing" out any agendas. Up until now you had my respect at least for following your cause. I never agreed that there should be a law stating a mandatory spay/neuter, I mentioned that your alarmist position is somewhat misleading and misinformed. Despite your obvious anger against the government the enemy in this case isn't your local ACO, the rescues, the HS or even the mislead PETA people. What fills shelters up is overbreeding pure and simple. I promote objective and what I see as truth, not what you or any other advocates promote. Good luck with your rally, this was pointless on my part so I'm done. "Huffy"? I guess thats better then a extremist, so ummmm. Thanks! |

Topic: Media / Barbarity At Animal Shelter Key To Kern County Spay/Neuter Law Debate Sorry, but spay and neuter will not help the problem? Backyard breeders are there to meet consumer demand? And because I read something you cut and paste doesn't make it fact, I could give a crap less about what your "biz" says and quotes, I do however go by what I see EVERYDAY in shelters, backyards and in the papers in the form of "free to good home ads" AND I happen to have a pup from one of these situations. Perhaps my resume may not be as respectful as yours but I've been on the front lines of the pet overpopulation in the dirt, and don't tell me from your office setting that taking up arms or whatever it is you mean by "fighting" for the rights of these backyard breeders rights is going to fix things. If you have a daughter when she becomes of age she has a God given right and a right as a US citizen to get pregnant, does that mean it is right for her to do so? Can you post a link to a respected (lmao) media source, other then yours (no offense) where a US citizen has had their animals taken away WITHOUT due process? The idea of, "The business of Animal Rescue, Animal Control, Animal Rights, using ‘perverted’ laws to seize YOUR DOGS, at will, thru FINES, FEES, and CONFISCATIONS, to create an ‘endless’ supply of dogs for THEM to sell" makes me realise my mistake in replying, you cannot deal with fanatics. I have to go pick up some body paint now. Goodluck with your "biz" |

Topic: Media / Barbarity At Animal Shelter Key To Kern County Spay/Neuter Law Debate Okay so leaving all the speculation and what cannot be proven aside, what are you getting at? We are all in terrible danger of the government coming to take away our animals and maybe we should take off all of our clothes and march on the hill? Get real dude. Let me make it simple for you, just facts here no quotes. Less dogs born= less dogs killed, barbaric or otherwise. You can promote these fanatical "alliances" all you like and call it whatever you like, "hobby breading" (still trying to figure out wtf that is) doggy love or whatever, backyard breeding is backyard breeding I don't agree with losing personal rights but when people don't have enough sense someone needs to step in and people like yourself promoting the rights of those to crank out puppies as they see fit are part of the problem. While we are speculating, a mandatory spay or neuter law would not include responsible/ professional breeders otherwise the animals would cease to exist, to assume this is the goal of your elected officials is absurd. Of course you can define the bills as you see fit. Pets are a big business, apply some common sense. The second amendment is always on the news and it's always upheld but try going out in your street and waving your gun around, it is your right to do so! but what do you think would happen? Common sense people, don't rely on your government OR "alliances" to do it for you. For me, I wouldn't be to offended at a mandatory spay law since I do it anyway, I wouldn't mind a tax deduction as a start though. |

Topic: Advice, Training And Tips / What Is A Reputable Breeder? When I was doing my research on the different herding breeds naturally I found A LOT (for Tina) of sites that I would consider reputable. Many of the sites had plenty of pictures of the areas the dogs have and all the puppies. It looks like a RB would not be in it for the money as much as they have the money to do it and a sincere love of the dogs. The reason for the high price tag I assume is twofold, it recovers some of the cost but also the RB wants to be sure the dog will get excellent care. Still if ever I was going to go that route I think I would make a surprise visit to the breeders to see things for myself but as long as there are dogs in rescue, thats for me! |

Topic: Health, Diet And Vets / 6 year old Golden ate a corncob Hi Olie, their isn't really a problem with eating them unless your pup has a allergy which I'm guessing by now would have surfaced. The problems come in when dogs swallow to big a chunk of the cob and it isn't broken down all the way in the stomach, it finds it's way into the intestine and can cause major problems. I don't think this is always the case, since my issue with my last dog I've known quite a few pups that have never had problems with corn cobs but personally I like to err on the side of caution because that one time could be enough. |

Topic: Advice, Training And Tips / BAD LAB Along with the advice given above one thing that has to stop now is her getting loose. I'm assuming that when you get her back she's in big trouble? You might try working with her to where her coming to you is a good thing for her. Get a long rope and stake it in the ground, stay out there with her so she doesn't try breaking her neck and when she gets used to her limits go to different places and call her to you, praise the hell out of her for coming, give her treats etc. Once she gets used to the idea move the rope to different places and repeat the recall. Once you are confident she won't bolt on you remove the rope all together, once she has the idea that coming to you means good stuff she may not want to bolt at all. In case I got this all wrong and her recall is good I'm basing this on where you said "try and get her back home". Buddy used to love hopping the fence until I showed him that things were better on this side of it. Exercise, structure and growing out of the puppy stage should help with the rest of the issues, hang in there. They are great dogs. |

Topic: Rescues, Shelters And Adoptions / Bad rescue?!!! I've seen this before in volunteer situations, both dog related and others and I think what happens is that while most people mean well and really have good intentions, sometimes it is just not meant to work out. Society tells us quitting is bad, especially when they truly do want to help so they stick with it, dealing with the stress. They hear all the stories behind each new arrival and it sickens and angers them and of course it comes out eventually. I'm not even involved in the hands on dealings everyday that go on in rescue but some of it angers me to the point where if I did what Tina does and some others do here I would end up in jail. I'm not making a excuse for anyone, just trying to see both sides. I once answered a petfinder ad "Is there any hope for this girl?" it was a humane society and they never returned a e-mail or call so I'm not defending these actions. |

Topic: Health, Diet And Vets / What do you use for canine arthritis? When my last dog was showing symptoms at around 13 years we used glucosamine, it worked great and you can buy it at any drugstore just adjust the dosage for your dog. Be sure that it is derived from shellfish and not corn, I don't know how they can get this stuff from two totally different sources but the corn derived glucosamine made Abby itch alot. We wish you luck |

Topic: Puppies / Cage pooping Well I've been blessed in the potty training department, my dogs have all been easily trained. I do know something that will help clean her up some, make her smell better and help her skin. Find a avon supplier and get some "Skin So Soft", mix it in a spray bottle with water at about a 4 to 1 ratio. Spray this on her, dont get any in her eyes and then brush it in real well, after that she'll be alittle slick so take a soft paper towel and rub her down with it to soak up extra and help push it down to her skin. I do this in between bath times for Buddy and Orbit and I've got nothing but good things to say about this stuff. It even repels bugs. For the record I do not sell or profit in any way from Avon :) |

Topic: Health, Diet And Vets / Fixed today I'm going to give a go at the low heartrate issue. What concerns me is the xray results, is the fluid or infection in the lungs or is it the actual sac that surrounds the heart? A second xray would be helpful in the case this was a bacterial infection of this sac, this doesn't really make sense because normally the inflamed sac (I'm still trying to remember the medical term) causes low blood pressure. I'm assuming BP is okay? Did they stress test her at all? It would be interesting to see how her heart reacts to being exercised, it very well be that she just has normally low heart rate but for a 3 year old I would guess the lethargy is a symptom. I'm still thinking about that xray. While you are walking her pay close attention for any dizziness or disorientation, also look for the dizziness when she first stands up after sleeping, make a note of anything you notice that seems abnormal for the vet. Last but not least, I am not a doctor, I'm just a person who reads alot and I have had my own heart issues so naturally I've done much research but by no means take my word. Nobody, including the vet knows more about your pup then you do so the best thing you can do is watch and listen so you may relay any symptoms at all to her doctor. We wish you good luck |

Topic: Puppies / bringing me her food Just a wild guess here but it almost sounds like a submissive behavior, dogs like to have a pecking order and you are included in the pack. The leader always eats first and perhaps you have a naturally submissive type dog so she is saying, "are you sure it's okay to eat this" or, "here, ya want some"? Like I said it's all just a guess but what if you move her feeding to when you are eating, if she approaches you just kinda push her away? |
