Topic: General / Breeding Dogs for the Right Reasons Aussie6pk I agree with you totally, on everything you said in your original post as well as what you said in your latest post. It is a valid issue that should be discussed. Thank you for caring enough to start this thread and to try to keep it on track. |

Topic: General / Breeding Dogs for the Right Reasons The video link posted in this forum topic is offensive beyond words. The KKK is well known for its promotion of hatred and acts of violence. Does anyone really think that the AKC stands for those same things?
It is far worse to invoke Nazism when discussing the issue of breeding dogs. It is an insult to the 6,000,000 Jews plus the multitude of Catholics, gays, gypsies, and blacks who were taken from their homes and systematically exterminated by the Nazis.
Is it not possible to have a difference of opinion without insulting people whose family members were the victims of the Nazis or the KKK, or who would themselves have been the victims of the Natzis or the KKK if they had been in harms way?
The video, titled "Wrong Meeting" was created by an individual who goes by the name PinkCarrot4, according to utube where it is posted. It gives the appearance of being the product of PETA (probably to lend authenticity to the views expressed). If you go to the PETA website, you will find a list of all their videos. "Wrong Meeting" does not appear on the list. If you want to check it out for yourself, go to http://www.petatv.com/tvpopup/archive.asp.
To me it doesn't matter who created it or whether it is a product of PETA or not. It is offensive in the extreme and does not belong on this site. To those of you who have expressed your agreement with, or approval of, the video, I request that you look at it again and ask yourself how you would feel if you were one of the minorities targeted by the Nazis or the KKK .
I also believe that comments made by members who invoke the Nazis when expressing their views about breeding could and should refrain from doing do. It is possible to disagree respectfully and without the use of inflamatory comments such as these. People who belong to MDS should be able to enjoy it without being exposed to these tactics. Personally, comparing any dog owners (regardless of their views) to Nazis make me feel ill, not the way I want to feel when I visit this site.
One wonderful thing about dogs is that they don't judge people. Can we, as dog lovers, not do the same? |

Topic: General / Breeding Dogs for the Right Reasons I think to say there is no reason to breed so long as there are any dogs in shelters is short-sighted. If all breeding is stopped until there are no more dogs in shelters (assuming that is attainable), there would be no more dogs because the ones that hadn't been spayed or neutered would be too old by then.
I do agree that most dogs should be spayed or neutered - the only exceptions being those owned by quality breeders as they will produce healthy, genetically sound dogs. It is not fair to compare breeders to nazis as nazis were motivated by hatred. The breeders I know are passionate about what they do and dedicated to producing the healthiest dogs possible. They love dogs, not just their own breeds but all dogs, including mixed breeds.

Topic: Support And Suggestions / MDS messed up again I just left a message on your page Robert - I get the maintenance message when trying to go onto my own page. I have had problems all day. This is the first time all day I have been able to post a comment anywhere - all other tries resulted in the proxy error. |

Topic: Pals / German Shepherd Lover Here No don't get rid of your dishes. That's the whole point - the roosters who fight do it because humans train them to fight. It's not the roosters' fault. Nor should nonfighting roosters be disliked because of the way sick humans misuse their fellow roosters. Hmmm maybe I should start a "Don't Blame the Roosters" blog or Forum topic. |

Topic: Pals / German Shepherd Lover Here Nadia, please don't discriminate against all Australians because you don't like the way one acts - BOL. I know, that was your point.
I agree with all the responses to this topic. It is the owners, not the dogs that give the breed a bad reputation. I have known APBs that were as gentle and sweet as a lamb.
Dog fighting is a sickening "sport" if one can even call it that. But the dogs don't choose to participate; decisions are made for them. Cock fighting is equally brutal. But I never hear people saying they hate roosters or are afraid of them or that there shouldn't be any more.

Topic: Advice, Training And Tips / Terrified of the Car? Help? I don't know how I missed this before. Take her places she really likes, or places where she will get a lot of attention/treats (you could set this up with friends). The goal is to have her associate riding in a car with good things happening. It will take time, but hopefully it will work. To the extent that you have to take her places she won't like (i.e. the vet) it will take longer for her to associate the car with good things. Try to have multiple good experiences for every bad one. |

Topic: Support And Suggestions / Keeping Dog in Crate Maybe you could arrange to keep her at your house when you are at home and leave her in her crate at her home when you are working. Or you could put the owners in the crate and send the dog on a vacation. |

Topic: Support And Suggestions / HOW TO CUSTOMIZE YOUR PAGE AND OTHER NEW MEMBER INFORMATION CUSTOMIZE YOUR PAGE: To make your page pretty, start with the Customize options at the top of your screen. They enable you to change your Background color, background image, and the color of the other areas listed i.e. user box, profile box etc. As for the background image, when you click that there are standard options provided. Or you can use you own. A lot of MDS members use a personal photo as the background image. Others use an impage from photobucket. You can change your colors and background image whenever you want.
GIFTS: The toys and icons on the top of MDS pages are gifts and awards. As for the gifts, you purchase these gifts using doggie dollars. You can purchase them for yourself, and you can send them to friends. The piggy bank on the upper right of your page, next to the sun, shows how many doggie dollars you have in your bank. You are given 10 when you join, and then you get one each day you sign on (after 24 hours have passed) - so if you sign on at 10 one morning you don't get the next one until after 10 the next morning. When you click the piggy bank, it shows all the gifts that are available and how many doggie dollars each costs. Most gifts are at least $10 doggie dollars, but every now and then there is a special limited edition that is only $5. You can also earn doggie dollars - when you click the piggy bank it shows how. The ability to purchase doggies dollars with real dollars was just added.
AWARDS: The awards are earned - i.e. when there is a photo contest and you enter. There will be an announcement when the next one is taking place. The blue bone you get when you have more than 50 pals.
PAL REQUESTS: In the upper right corner of your page, you will see a photo of two dog faces and under it the word pals. In the parentheses will be the number of people who have sent you a pal request, if any. Click on pals and it will show you the outstanding requests. Click accept for each one you want to accept.
When you want to send a pal request, on the page of the pal you want, on the left hand side under the word Home is Pal Request. Click on that. Then you will have to copy a validation code and click again. If you entered the code correctly, there will be a message saying your request has been sent or something like that. If you didn't enter it correctly, you will get that as a message and can repeat the process beginning with clicking pal request.
SPECIAL BARKS: To learn how to send the special barks you see everyone using, there is a blog here in the Forum section How to post pictures etc.

Topic: Support And Suggestions / Glitch with Gift Giving? Has anyone else noticed that sometimes when you give or receive a gift it happens in duplicate? I first became aware of this 18 days ago when I received two bears from Spiffy, at the same time and with the same message. Then she posted a bark that she had used all her doggie dollars and couldn't send one to her parents. I immediately sent one using my doggie dollars.
I thought this was an isolated incident until yesterday or the day before when Zack & Quincy gave me a duck. Suddenly there were two ducks from them, with the identical message, and I had $10 less in doggie dollars. I did inadvertently go back to the Gift page, but I did not click SUBMIT the second time. Since doggie dollars are such a precious commodity, I decided to look around for other examples.
So far I have only found one more; JesseK9 gave Monty two identical gifts with the same message at the same time.
If this has happened to you or if you've noticed it happening to someone else, please bark.

Topic: General / Rottweilers are bad and here's proof Emily you completely misunderstood my point - which is that when you only ask for information about attacks by a certain breed, that is all you will get.
As for some of the German Shepherd responses being duplicates, and one being about attacking a rope, I deliberately copied what was therewhen I did the Google search so as not to be misleading. I was not trying to prove that German Shepherds are vicious, because I don't think they are. Likewise for Rottweilers.
Again, my point was that you can't "prove" a breed is bad by seeking only one-sided information.

Topic: General / Rottweilers are bad and here's proof Emily, the fallacy of your original post "Rottweilers Are Bad and I Can Prove it" is that you stated you googled "Rottwieler attacks" not Rotweillers in general. Naturally all the information you got back from this targeted search was about Rotweiller attacks. To prove my point, I googled "German Shepherd attacks". Here's the first two pages of results. I don't think Rottweilers are bad, or Gernam Shepherds are bad, etc. It is how a dog is treated and trained that determines whether it is a bad dog (of course, breeders can attempt to pass on vicious genes by breeding only the most aggressive of their dogs). Maybe once you read the following about the breed that you have you will recognize that when you go looking only for information that proves your point, that is all the information you will get.

Topic: Support And Suggestions / How to Use Doggie Dollars The pink piggy bank at the top of your profile page shows the amount of doggie dollars you have. When you click on your piggy bank you will see which gifts you have enough money to buy and which you don't (the ones you don't will say "locked").
To use your dollars, there are two ways you can send a gift. The first is from the piggy bank page. Simply fill out the "To" space with who you want to send it to (notice it is already filled in with your own name so if you want to give it to someone else make sure you change this - a lot of people make a mistake and don't change it so they send the gift to themselves - which is fine if that's what you want to do). There is another space to fill in the message that will be posted with your gift. Finally, you click on the gift you want to send (from those that aren't locked) Notice different gifts have different price tags. The least expensive are the special editions that are only available for a short amount of time.
The second way to use your doggie dollars to send a gift is to go to the page of the person you want to send the gift to. At the top of their profile it is the second choice, next to "email me" - click on "send a gift". This will take you to the same page as if you had clicked on the piggy bank at the top of your profile page, except that the name of the page from which you had clicked "send a gift" will be in the "To" space instead of your own name.
