Topic: Rescues, Shelters And Adoptions / English Mastiff Rescues

Hi there,

We are still looking, but for a female, and we're hoping for fawn or apricot. Also, I was talking to one of Maxx's trainers and she was saying, locally, there have been issues with Mastiffs. She said they're fine as puppies, but then they become aggressive and start attacking family members. She also said the quality of German shepherds, locally.

I think the wise thing to do is just wait a while to see if breeding improves, or for that perfect Mastiff to fall into my world.

Thanks!

Topic: Rescues, Shelters And Adoptions / English Mastiff Rescues

Good morning,

We're thinking of expanding our family and I'd love to look into rescuing an English Mastiff puppy, if I can find one looking for a home.

I live in RI, but am willing to travel up to about 2 and a half hours to meet the puppy first.

Does anyone know of any clubs or rescues where I might be able to find a puppy?

I would like a pure bred, and wanna do the noble thing and hold off on meeting with breeders until after I've exhausted the rescue search.

Thanks!

Wow...honestly, I grew up with my chows, they were the only dogs I had and they were CONSTANTLY tending to their personal appearance...I get Maxx and I'm like, "What's YOUR problem?" Thinking that the chows were the norm and he's the weirdo!

Maxximilian, my apologies, my good friend.

Clean his or her own eye boogers?

We got Maxx just after 8 weeks..so you'd think he would've learned the skill, but he will not touch them, or clean his face and lick his paws like most other dogs do.

Unless the eye booger becomes insanely long and fold back on itself and irritate his eye...

Is there a remedy or should I stock up on paper-towels for the do-it-yourself job?

Topic: Advice, Training And Tips / Leash Pulling (& other CGC) Advice

Okay, I just started a pet assisted therapy program and I know down the raod, we may need to get our canine good citizen certificate. I went to what I thought was a class a coupe of years ago, bu it turned out to be more of a "show up and let's see what your dog already knows how to do." We were unable to complete the following: - Walk with slack in the leash - Ignore people in a crowd - Walk by another dog, ignoring it I could drop a thousand bucks and have someone train Maxx how to do this, or I can save some money and he and I could really work together on this. i just need some advice. I also never taught him how to heel, and I think maybe this might be the best route. He's a 100 lb german shepherd. very willing o please. motivated by tennis balls and treats and affection. Thanks in advance!

Thanks, Yeah, we tried to get the CGC, but SOMEONE likes to pull on the leash a wee bit too much, and is SO nosy when other people and dogs are around. This isn't something you take with your dog, I don't think...I'll find out today exactly what it en-tails!

There's a class at the local community college offering training in PAT. Has anyone taken similar courses? Do I need a background in psych? Is there a lot of demand for people to fill these positions? Do they train you to train animals (dogs) or mainly how to get the dog and human to benefit and heal from the interaction? Thanks!

Maxx does not mark his territory, nor does he lift his leg. It's quite comical actually. I don't mind it. I don't want him to start urinating on every erect object he comes across.

Topic: Advice, Training And Tips / Warm Socks for Small Dogs

Hey guys, My niece has a Yorkie and the other day, he got on my lap and I could feel his freezing foot pad through my jeans. They have little sweaters forhim because he shivers frequently, in the mornings mainly, but we hit up PetsMartlooking for some little booties or socks. I used to have chows when I lived in Minnesota, and we had neoprene booties for themto keep their feet warm in the snow, but we're just looking for little tiny fleece or flannel or some kind of warm material socks that would fit a little yorkie's feet and that will stay on his legs. Thanks guys.

Topic: Advice, Training And Tips / Fisher Cats

Top o' th' mornin' to you all. Okay. I started a thread a while back about the local Craigslist's pet adoption section being hijacked by people with advice questions and mudslinging. So I'm sure you can forsee how it could become highly addicting to read. Yesterday, someone started talking about "Fisher Cats" or "Fishers" as they're sometimes called. I live in Rhode Island, and people say they hear something that sounds like either a woman screaming, a baby crying, or an animal being attacked...and it's this animal, they say. People started writing in saying that their dogs had been attacked by them before and that these Fisher things can be aggressive and can kill. One woman from NTC justmoved to an are, not particularly rural, but not so urban and she lets her dogs out in the morning and is now afraid to do so because of these Fisher thingies. I've never seen one, heard of one or amtoo concerned (I think Maxx could take 'em) but I'm sure they were here first. But it's still kinda scare. I guess they're weasel-like, I really don't know. Just wondering if A. anyone has heard of them, and B. has had a run in with them. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fisher_%28animal%29

He also digs those hooves that are usually on a rope...you know the ones...with the smell that could gag a maggot...I hadto stop those too cause he coughed a shard of that up too...I guess he's just too big...maybe I'll trade him in for a Yorkie or something that they make proportionate food for. This is discrimination. Big food for big dogs. Let the revolution begin! I am glad thay finally made an enormous Booda...I see they sell huge XL Kongs, but the little treats that go in them only work with S, M & L. They need a PetsMart Big&Tall.

OKay...I have a 90 pound German Shepherd and like to give him edible treat bones, like the edible Denta-bones or BusyBones...I was thrilled to come across a BusyBone for Jumbo dogs. When I brought Maxx home the Holy Grailof chewy bones, I had time to pour a glass of ice water, have a sip, turn on the dishwasher and put the outgoing mail in the box before he was standing on his bed, circling to lap up the crumbs. I do give him hard bones, but only if I can keep an eye on him, he'll break off shards that I'm afraid he'll choke on...thesemi-hard ones put my mind at ease...Any one have any suggestions for me and the big guy? Thanks!

Yeah, that's what I'd think...a broken leg warrants urgent care I'd think...because it would start healing broken right? And we've all seen Emergency Vets and Animal Cops...they DO treat the animal and sometimes at the pound, they'll fix the problem and then the person who adopts the animal pays for the surgery. It does seem sketchy...But then, she doesn't want the money...she wants it to go to the vet...I'm in the middle of moving ;P but my curiosity is piqued...I'll call in the morning and verify!

Topic: Advice, Training And Tips / Dog Food For Thought

Hi all. I live in Providence, Rhode Island, and frequently peruse the pet section og our local Craigslist. A few days ago, a woman posted an ad saying that her dog "Sammy" was his by a car, had a broken leg and was at the emergency vet's office and that she could not afford the $4500 surgery. She was asking for help and said that donations could be made directly to the vet's office and that she'd be willing to sell what little she had to people if they would help. She was greeted with people A. thinking it was a scam, B. Calling her lazy and pathetic and to get a job (to which she stated she was between jobs and in school and her boyfriend just left her) C. Support and prayers D. People willing to sell some of their things for money to go to the vet and E. People saying had her dog been trained properly this never would've happened. The debate is getting pretty heated and some people are really cold about the whole thing, but I was just curious as to what people's thoughts are about this. I was a little skeptical about it being a scam since it WAS Craiglist, but people said they called the vet and it checked out. Just curious. This has been going on about 3 days and the dog still has a broken leg. Is that inhumane? http://providence.craigslist.org/pet/

Awesome! Thanks! I actually had Maxx in a CGC class...or shall I say, CGC Show-Up_And-Let's-See-What-Your-Dog-Already-Knows class... it was a waste of our time, and I just got frustrated. They didn't give me methods or teach me how to teach him to get hte things I wanted out of him. The main problem I had was that he pulled on the leash, it was seldom taut and that in the walk through the crowd part, he was really interested in engaging the crowd and interacting with the people. I will gladly do the class if I can find a good one, where they'll actually teach me...I plan on working on the pulling and getting him to pay 100% attention to me when I need him to when he's back home with me. But I will definately look for another class, and read some reviews! Thanks and congratulations! It's gotta be extremely rewarding!

Hi. Has anyone gone through the necessary steps to make your dog a therapy dog? I am extremely interested in working with Maxx to get him to be one. I just want to know the process, the stories, things to consider and anything else you can tell me or anyone else thinking about cheering up sick people (especially children) with a soft, warm, fuzzy thing! Thanks!

Hi There. I tried emailing, but I'm sure that box is crammed...I'm unable to blog anymore or bark on someone elses blog. In my blog, I can write in the Subject box, but when I click and try to type in the body, nothing happens...and with barking, the same deal, no cursor in the box and no text shows up when I type! I'm using Safari on a Mac. I'll try it with Firefox in a moment...thanks, Buddy!

Yeah, I've "yelped" when Maxx was a puppy and he nipped. It worked, he stopped and his face was hilarious when he realized he may have hurt me. You get the cocked head and and bugged-out eyes like, "Geez...was it THAT bad?"
