Individual who adopted from shelter
November 24, 2007

I have been wanting another dog for some time.  I have almost adopted a grown dog a couple of times but Sephi and the other dogs refused to get along.  So I decided that if I was going to get another dog, it was going to have to be a puppy who would have no problem in accepting Sephi as being the one in charge.  I assumed I could not adopt a puppy from a shelter since I lived in an apartment (even though my apartments allow up to two big dogs) so I kept an eye out for anyone needing to find a new home for their puppy.  I came across a lady who needed to find a home for the puppy she just adopted because her apartment complex does not allow pets at all.  (I have no idea how this lady came to be able to adopt a dog when she lived in an apartment that did not allow pets. I suspect that the lady simply could not handle the responsibility of a puppy.  Puppies, after-all, can be quite handful at times - especially if you don't know much about raising a puppy.)  When I saw this puppy I fell in love right away.  Maya was almost three months old and full of energetic cuteness.  I took her home the same day.

Sephi did not care for the new addition at first, but it has been three weeks and they are starting to play.  Even though I live in an apartment, Maya is perfectly happy.  We go for mile walks almost every day.  We play outside in the courtyard almost every day.  And we play inside all the time.  Maya was unfortunately not yet potty trained so we have had a few accidents.  She still has not learned to let me know when she has to go out so I just have to really watch her and let her out as often as possible.  Maya was not kennel trained either but she took to that very well.  She sleeps quietly in it every night.  And on the 1 or 2 times per week that I have to go into work, she stays in there and does not bark or whine from what my neighbors have told me.

Everyone who has met her has fallen in love with Maya.  She is most likely a pure yellow lab but it is hard to say for certain since she came from a shelter.  Maya's name is short for Mayadevi.  Mayadevi is a Hindu goddess.  I chose this name because my other dog's name also comes from mythology.
