SOME TIMES THIS IS CAUSED BY THE FOOD THEY EAT. AND YOU MAY NEED TO GO WITH A BRAND THAT HAS NO ANIMAL BY PRODUCT IN IT. OR NO GRAINS, LIKE A LAMB AND RICE OR CHICKEN AND RICE. THIS HELP ALL THE DOGS I HAVE. AND OF COURSE WITH NO ANIAML PRODUCT LIKE OLDS ROTTEN MEAT OR EVEN OTHER DOGS GRIND UP IN IS BEST TO STAY AWAY FROM. I KNOW YOU MAY WONDER IF THEY DO USE LIKE ROAD KILL AND EVEN DEAD DOG MEAT IN DOG FOOD SOUND FAR FETCH, BUT YES THIS DOES HAPPEN. THE FOOD WILL COST A LITTLE MORE IF YOU BUY THE LAMB AND RICE OR THE CHICKEN AND RICE, BUT IT IS WELL WORTH IT. BUY THE CHILDERN'S BENEDRYL AND GO BY THE WEIGHT, BUT I WOULD TRY THE FOOD FIRST. GIVE IT A FEW DAYS FOR THEM TO GET USE TO THE FOOD, YOU CAN MIX THE OLD FOOD WITH THE NEW FOOD AND TAKE THE OLD FOOD AWAY A LITTLE AT A TIME. THEY ALSO WILL NOT HAVE TO POOH ALOT IF THEY EAT THE GOOD DOG FOOD. THE REASON THEY WOULD GO SO MUCH IS BECAUSE THE GRAINS FILL THEM UP TO FAST AND THIS IN TURN CAUSE THEM TO WANT TO GO OUT A LOT.

I've heard good things about the Benedryl, too. But like you, I was too afraid to give it to my little ones. My BooBoo sometimes has skin irritations too that he will chew until they're sores. The thing that works the best for him is a clean water rinse weakly (along with his normal bath with doggie soap once a month). Let me know if you find something that works.
Hope you're feeling better soon!

In the past I've had a tough time with licking my paws and getting hot spots. Mom changed my food so I'm not getting any grain. I'm now eating NutriSource kibbles (my sister Emmie eats that too) and sometimes Mom will put a tbsp of raw pumpkin in with the NutriSource. Yummy! She also gives us raw carrots and broccoli. Double Yummy! My favorite is when she sometimes gives us a tsp of the cat food. That's the best - I gobble that right down. She doesn't do it often enough, though. I don't lick my paws near as much and haven't had hot spots for a long time. Keep us posted how it goes. Teddy (and Emmie)

I work for a vet and the Benedryl is a good start. Use childrens Benedryl and go by weight. It will make him sleep a lot just like a person. He will probably urinate more than usual. Trim the hair where he is chewing and put some hydrocortizone in it and put his foot in an old sock to keep him from licking. You need to keep his foot dry to keep him from getting a skin infection. My boss makes a solution that is a drying/healing topical. I wish that I knew how he made it because it would really help you out in this situation. Another thing that you could try is Epi-Otic that is for ears, but is a drying solution and that would work for his paw. Let me know if I can help you out any.

I do that sometimes but not excessively so mom doesn't worry. I bet it would be annoying to be asked that all the time. Do you think it might be a food allergy? Just a thought. I've heard a lot of people complain their dog has itching problems attributed to wheat and corn in their diets. I am not expert (I don't know much at all) - but have heard this being said.
