My name is Mrs. Besley,
I guess you could say I am a lucky pup. My mommy had just put her 14yrs old Peek-a-poo, Gizmo, to rest when she heard about me.
I needed rescuing from the breeders who were to have me put down because they weren't able to sell me like my littermates. See, I am deaf and I don't see too well.
This is the scientific explanation of what I am:
"Homozygous (MM) "double merle" or "white" Danes are usually deaf and may suffer with a variety of skin & eye problems. This is associated with the general lack of pigment that results when the dog has too much of the merle gene, which is directly
related to the lack of pigment." Or something similar.
So my mommy contacted the breeders and agreed to take me and have me spayed as soon as the vet said to. The look on her face when they delivered me to her was priceless.
I was about 7wks old and she was looking for a small puppy and then they put me in her arms, "What is this? She's as big as a full gown beagle." she explaimed. But once she looked into my baby blue eyes, she was hooked.
My mommy was trying to think up a good name for me and thought of an old show where the doll (Mrs. Besley) would get lost and the little girl would be so sad until she found her doll again. She thought that's how she would feel if I ever got lost. My mommy takes extra care of me. I am never allowed out the front door unless I am with her and secured to a leash. And I am never allowed to go on walks without my leash. She is very protective of me because if I'd ever run out in the street I'd never hear a car coming nor it's horn blaring. I was born with some problems, but that didn't stop my mommy from saving me from the breeders that were going to put me down because I was of no value to them.
I have a great family that loves me. I share my home with two cats, both are spayed and are goofy. My daddy loves me too. "Only the best for his princess" he says.
I love to go on walks but I have to wait for the sun to go low before we take off, because I burn very easily. When my family takes me to the park near us I don't get too much walking done due to people always stopping us to talk about me. They like to look at me and touch me like I am a very special pup. Some people think I am very rare. But we know that is not true, the others like me don't make it from the breeders. Even my vet tried to talk mommy into having me put down, said I would not have a very good quality of life. They only give me about five yrs to live. Mommy said that she would give me the best five yrs that any pup could have. We can't wait to prove them wrong.
Mommy read about deaf dogs and sign language but it was my sister, Joni, that started teaching me. She knows I have a weakness for chocolate. I cost my mommy about $20.00 one day cause I found Joni's chocolate treats and ate them all; two bags of chocolate/peanut butter cups and a box of chocolate/peanutbutter cereal. I thought it was very tasty but my mommy was worried sick. Now they all know to put the chocolate out of my reach. But that doesn't stop me from having a few Easter Eggs when they are left out to dry. You should have seen me the day I found a box of icy pops that someone forgot to put in the freezer. Mommy came home and found a multi-colored pup. I had red, green, blue, and purple splashed all over me and the kitchen floor. She said I was the most beautiful pup ever.
We'd love to hear from any deaf pups or any one else.
