Seizures....

Hi there~ Smokey Joe here! Well, I have this issue. I suffer seizures from time to time! It's not a pretty sight, and I know I scare Mom and Dad everytime I have one, especially if they are around trying to comfort me, making sure I don't hurt myself!
They found out last night that they need to keep my activities limited, as energetic outbursts, which I experience everytime I see my tennis balls, can increase the chances for having seizures.  Usually, I suffer a seizure every couple of months, but I ended up having two yesterday!  And I think its associated with all the activity I had yesterday!  So now I have to watch what I eat, I have to go for longer walks, cuz I won't be able to run around as much, and Mom insists, I also have to be nice to the CATS!  That's going to be the hardest part of it all!

Thanks, but we think we found out a solution that works for me!  Mom and Dad put pedialyte in my water everyday along with one drop of Peppermint Oil (essential oil) and i have not had a problem since!  Now we don't know if it's the Oil or the Pedialyte that helps but it does!  No meds required!

Hi Smokey Joe!

Snowden here, I have epilepsy too! I have grand mal seizures, which means that I have a bunch right after another. When I was younger, I used to recover very quickly, but now that I am older, they fill my lungs with fluid, so it's harder to recover, I even ended up in the hospital twice this year. Just have your Mom and Dad watch out for heavy breathing, and that your pupils are regular because the seizures can lead to swelling on the brain (which is what landed me in the hospital). I take Phenobarbital too ( I can't spell it either ) and I take potasium bromide too! So I feel your pain! I'm sorry you can't play ball as much, but I think being special gets me lots of extra love and attention from my Mom, so maybe you could work that angle too! Extra pets always makes me feel better. My Mom finds that not giving me people food helps a lot too - I don't know if you get any, but I used to get lots, and sometimes preservatives or chemicals can cause seizures.

Anyhow - good luck, and I hope we can be pals,

Snowden

Hi Smokey Joe,  I'm sorry you have a problem with those nasty "seizures".  My older poodle brother, Hogan, had a seizure once when mom first got him.  He went to the emergency vet, got a shot, the the next day to our regular vet for some blood tests.  The Doc said he has Epilepsy and he has to take "Phenobarbytol" (I can't spell it) every day forever.  Thankfully, he hasn't had any more seizures since 2001 when mom first got him.  He's a lucky pup (for an old guy).  Good luck to you.  Hope you feel better.

Luv from Holly in Texas (Dixie and Hogan too)

Maggie, my brother's lab mix (at rainbow bridge, now) was prone to seizures. We kept syringes of Karo (clear) syrup or Pedialyte ready. If she started to go into one, she got a little in her mouth, it helped. Ask your vet if this might help Smokey Joe. Tina & the AusSiebelts
