My Blog Entry
Vet Visit
My boy Gizmo is new to me, I adopted him in Nov. from our local shelter. Right after I got Gizmo we went to the vet they suggested and the Dr. said he looked good but needed a dental cleaning to the tune of $218.00. Well yesterday I took Gizzy to my regular vet who said Gizmo was in good shape except his teeth and quoted me a price of $488.00. That includes anesthesia, pre-blood work, and a tooth extraction. I just thought that price was outrageous and told him I'd think about it.

yeah thats a pretty pricey amount of money, my patches who is at the rainbow bridge now but i had his teeth cleaned when i had him neatured and the total bill for the whole thing including teeth cleaning and a few teeth extraction was 400 and some odd dollars... But they cut me a break on the teeth extraction because i've gone to that vet for a long time. But hope gizmo gets his teeth cleaned because that is important... Also i recommend if he'll let you to brush his teeth, i brush cassies teeth, she doesn't like it but she is good enough to let me do it.

think i will start looking for one of those vets that don't put them to sleep. my neighbor is a dental hygenist and has been cleaning her dogs teeth since he was a puppy. i think your vets cost is outrageous. I would have passed out.

I would never recommend putting a dog under (humans call it sedation dentistry), unless absolutely necessary ~ it depends on the degree of tartar/damage. There are too many risks involved. I know Jessica (who does this non- sedation procedure) out of a vet friend's in Boynton. What vet did you go to? (email me)
Our Chloe gets a lot of build up, and between the additive I put in their water and brushing her teeth with this miracle pink gel, she has NEVER had to be put under! tina

Tina and I use the same vet - I just had Zack's teeth cleaned and it was almost $300. BUT I have been hearing about a new procedure that was started in California where they can clean a dog's teeth without putting them to sleep. I have checked around and have been told that Boca Green Vet uses this procedure and the cost is $75.

You live in Boca Raton. Ask Tina & Carla which vets they use. That's where they live too.

You may think that price is outrageous, but I would trust my own vet before I'd trust a vet that the shelter sent me to. I've never heard the shelter I used to volunteer at recommend the vets they use. They use good vets, but I think they'd much rather have their customer use a vet they (the customer) are comfortable with.
