My mom has been collecting examples of white spitz-type dogs in paintings, and decided to display them here.
It's part of her fascination with the history of samoyeds, and when and how other white spitz-types appeared. (She's also interested in what other northern dogs could be non-white samoyeds, but that's not something art history really covers.)
Anyway, most of the white spitz-type dogs in classic English portraits of the 18th and 19th century were the ancestors of today's Pomeranians. They were much bigger then, weighing about 25-30 pounds. These white Pomeranians were also known as German spitzes, and many were also ancestors of what became American Eskimos.
She'll try to add as much info as she's got about the dogs pictured, and hopes to collect some interesting barks, particularly from dogs who resemble the ones in the paintings.

Paintings with white spitz-type dogs are in the other profile. This is for a collection of other types of dogs I've found in paintings.
With the white spitz-types, I included both the painting and a detail of the dog--much more interesting to us. The only reason for including the entire painting was to get an idea of the white spitz-type's size (important to us who are interested in their permutations).
In this gallery, most of the pictures are just the details, without the bigger paintings. That way, I can include more dogs. If the caption doesn't say, detail, then it's the whole painting. It's also not organized as well as the white spitz-type gallery.
