My Blog Entry
To Leave Or Not to leave??? Not Leave??
I am on the MS Gulf Coast, and I live in a mobile home. Now I am sitting here watching the hurricane, and hoping for the best b/c leaving was not really am option for me.
My babies (dogs) are very very important to me and no matter what people say there is no place (shelter) that takes dogs and if they do they take 1 i have 3. (My Lacy girl don't have a profile yet.)
I am also in a wheelchair so "special need" shelters def. don't accept dogs.
So since i was pretty confident my place would be ok. SO I Stayed!!
Since this is a sight of "dog lovers" here is a question for u.
If you didn't have reliable transportation to go out of state and you couldn't take your dog babies with you to a shelter, what would you do?
I am so tired of being called stupid for staying b/c of my dogs.
I got my real kids out of town, so i think i did pretty good.
Sorry for the rant, but i felt if anybody would understand the wonderful people of this site would.
BTW the hurricane is almost over they are saying we have about 4 more hours of bad wind and rain, and all is well with me and my babies.

You are NOT stupid. I'd stay...now this IS NOT advice, it's simply my take on what I'd do in your situation. It's easier for me, though, to say that. Except for a few arthritic limitations, I'm strong and able bodied. I'm sure I'd stay even if I wasn't, though.
What a shame our pet's aren't welcome in emergency situations.

This really get me angry as to why shelters don't take your animals, but if there's ever an emergency guess what they do, they send in dogs to rescue, find, and console people. It doesn't figure. I can't believe you can't take them - how about taking them in carriers. Especially for you who have little dogs. It's not fair. We live on the coast and thankfully my Mom lives inland, but we too are vulerable to any type of storm. And to make another point, you are a special needs person (Mom works in school in the administrative end for special education - she understands) you need your babies!!!!!

I would have stayed too. My dogs are the most important in my life. I live in a camper in a campground because I couldn't rent anyplace with at the time 3 dogs. Wish I could take your baby but I live too far away.

To the wonderful people that replied...
The Worst is over all we are getting now is a little rain and a little wind. We got our power and cable, so we came through i am sure a lot better than most. A Little Roof Damage, downed limbs, and a few other minor things but we were blessed. Thanks U Very Much..
And Our Prayers go out to All The other people effect by Hurricane Gustav.

That hurricane is not as bad as they expected but still a very serious storm. Here in Austin, there are shelters that will take dogs. They put each one/pet in it's own crate and the dogs are being walked every so often. Being in a moble home during any kind of a storm is scary!! I certainly understand your predicament and I am so sorry you had no one to help you leave. It is definitely too late to leave now!! But to answer your question, NO I would not leave my DOGS! They are my family!! I want to be there for them and they are always there for me! I wish you the very best of luck during this really scary time! Ruth, Mom to Holly, Dixie and Hogan in Austin, TEXAS

There is no force on earth that could separate SUE & I against our wishes. If my only choices were let SUE cope with a storm alone while I ran for safety or staying with her through the storm - well, you'd find us cuddled up together waiting it out.
