Duke
Male, 9 years, 11 months old.
Birthday: August 1, 1998
Breed: Staffordshire Bull Terrier
Secondary Breed: Boxer
Size: Medium
"I always try to eat my sister's food when she's not looking!"

Nickname: Dukie
From: Montgomery County Humane Society
Home Date: December 8, 1998

Duke was originally brought to the rescue league along with all of his litter mates and his mother after they were seized during a drug raid that had taken place in August of 1998.  He had already been adopted out to a family before our family went to the the league in search of a playmate for our dog, "Shadow".

During the final week of the adoption process for "Daisy", "Duke" had been returned to the league by the family that had adopted him... apparently, he was more then they could handle and he had already aquired a majore injury to his left fore leg.

At the time, my mother insisted that we adopt him instead of "Daisy" and after much debate amongst ourselves, we decided to take them both.

"Duke" and "Daisy" are "litter-mates" and to this day they scrap on occasion like most brothers and sisters tend to do.  "Shadow" would always stay out of their way and let them "have-at-it".

Duke was 4 mos. old when he joined our family, now he's 9 years old, getting gray around the muzzle, dealing with lumps of fat in the oddest places and painful arthritis in that left fore leg that has begun to deform his elbow joint.

I have to take him to the vet to have them clip his nails because of the pain that shoots down that leg to his paw.  He tends to get nippy, even though he is an extremely loving dog, and he has to be sedated.  I've put him on all sorts of treatments, from traditional (Rimadyll) to non-traditional (chinese herbal pumices and acupuncture).  All I can do is make his life comfortable and happy till the end of his days.

Daisy
Female, 9 years, 11 months old.
Birthday: August 1, 1998
Breed: Staffordshire Bull Terrier
Secondary Breed: Boxer
Size: Medium
"I am a Queen & I am in charge.. always!"

Nickname: "Cho-chi-ta"
From: Montgomery County Humane Society
Home Date: December 12, 1998

Daisy was born just before her mom and littermates were seized in a drug raid.  Mom and all the pups ended up at the Humane Society and everyone of them, with the exception of Daisy, had been adopted out... Daisy was the "runt of the litter" and was extremely shy and timid.  We not only fell in love with her, but so did our little mutt "Shadow".

Daisy is Duke's sister and up until June, when our "Shadow" died, she was Shadow's constant friend and companion.

Daisy is extremely intelligent... so much so, that sometimes I think I can hear her speaking to me and making demands... she knows she's the boss and she lets everyone in the house know it.

Shadow
Male, 12 years, 8 months old.
Birthday: October 22, 1995
Breed: Mutt
Size: Small
"If a squirrel wanders into view... IT MUST BE CHASED!!"

Nickname: "bitty-bitty-baby"
From: Washington, DC Humane Society
Home Date: December 28, 1995

Shadow was our beloved, "first" dog... my very first dog that I'd ever shared my life with... he was loving, loyal, intelligent... he had a spark for life, up until the very end.

I will always hold a place in my heart for him and I miss him very much, every day.

Shadow died on June 19th, 2007 from diabetic complications.  We had been treating his diabetes for almost 2 years and he finally succumbed to it when he went into seizures sometime in the early morning hours of the 19th.  He was still in seizures, sugar levels in low 40's and a temp of 109 degrees when we finally came to the agreement, as a family, to give him peace at 5:30pm of that day.

We will love you always baby...

Aw ~ you guys totally lucked out. Mature dogs rule. Shadow reminds our mom so much of her (pre aussie) Casey, who was her first baby. She lived almost 17 years. And guess what is even more amazing? Shadow & mom share the same b-day!!!

Hey Nuke & Malice, thanks for all the great advice!! Unfortunately, the Adequan shots (6 mos. worth), did not help at all and Deramaxx had absolutely no effect.  The Vet X-rayed the elbow and there is visible malformed growths around the joint.  Oh well, at least I can still run and play with my sister and chase my neighbor's cat.

I'm so sorry to hear about Dukes pain! Rimadyl is an oldbie in the ring of anti-inflamatories, though. You might try Metacam. If that doesn't work, try Deramaxx (this is about as good as you can get right now... it's just once a day, too.) And they also have a fairly new one out on the market called Prevacox. We've heard a LOT of good things about that one. Humans even say that they think they will start taking it since it helps their dogs so much! Haha. And last but not least is Adequan Injections. You might have to get one once every month, but it does help a lot. I think it was originally made for horses! Hope you start feeling like a puppy again soon. And welcome to the site, by the way!
