Lucky to be taken from the euthanasia room at a local municipal "shelter", this sweet girl stayed in a no kill shelter for just a few weeks until being adopted by a new shelter volunteer. She went home to share her life with her new family, which included another older female shepherd mix. They got along wonderfully; unfortunately, her older sister succumbed to cancer within about two years. But Sammi was at her side throughout her surgery, recuperation, chemo treatments and ultimate demise. She now has a younger sister. She is a wonderful visitor to a nursing home twice a month where she engages in pet therapy.

I am a Potcake! If you don't know what that means, well then here goes....Potcakes are the roaming street dogs of the Bahamas. We find our food by scrounging around; families, after they've eaten, often put out a pot with a hard disk of peas and rice stuck to the bottom. We find that quite enticing...better than garbage, thus our name. We are considered a breed of our own known as POTCAKES! Along with some siblings and quite a few other puppies, I was imported into the US in the fall of 2004. Some very kind shelters opened their crates to us and we got out of the hurricane ravaged Bahamas.

My story is unique: I made it all the way to New York, having been spayed before leaving the island, and traveling all this way. I went to my first American home and they found out that I had a very severe heart murmur--so severe that I probably wouldn't make it to age 6 months! Back to the shelter I went. They felt that I had  come so far that they wouldn't want me to leave this earth so soon. So through much fund-raising and many good friends, I was lucky enough to have a procedure done that saved my life.

I went to my current home as a "foster" on 12/31/04; I was supposed to remain here for about 5 days while some other puppies who were sick were at the shelter. (they didn't want me catching anything!) However, I so charmed the two humans and one dog resident of this home, that they never returned me to the shelter!!
