Dede...as many of you know, is a very tempermental pup. In the past few months i have made a huge attempt so teach this old dog a few new tricks. I am slowly socializing her with other dogs who have calm, relaxed, temperments and taking her to lots of new places with strange people. Here are a few of her accomplishments...
-Wagfest-
There were 200 hundred dogs and starange people there. She had her muzzle on unless i was giving her water (which was frequent) and she did amazing as this was the start to her training. She growled once and one smaller dog who was very dominant. I made sure to correct her right away. She got her picture taken with the Miller Park Brewers sausages! People were comming up to her asking to pet her and i told them hand under the chin first, because it is less threatening to a dog. (my dogs breeder taught me that) She socialized with many other dogs, a lot of shepherds.
-Meeting Maggie-
She got to spend the day with Duke's daughter. Since it was on her home turf she growled a tad and then laxed and we took a nice long walk and spent time playing inside.
-The Labs-
Godiva and Nestles are two of Duke's owner's sister's (got that? haha) dogs. Nestles being 12 and Godiva being 5 months she had quite the mixtures of energy. We were at their house and Dede took to Nestles right away realizing she was calm. She did i slight growl at Diva and i corrected her and they ended up playing together for 2 hours in the living room. No muzzle!!
-Dog Park-
Okay, so we didnt actually go into the dog park but we walked the trails there. Your supposed to keep your dog on a leash but some guy had his husky off leash and it came running over her tail shot up and her hair on her back came up but as soon as i said "Hey!" she relaxed.
-Boardwalk-
It's a boardwalk over a river with lots of woods and right next to a very busy street. We took her here last weekend. With Duke. Bikers speeding by and strangers comming by saying "hi puppies". She did very well and had a great time getting tired out.
-Halloween-
My two nephews came over (ages 8 and 2) and i took them trick-or-treating. I put her muzzle on...responsible owner.....and walked her around with them. A lady that lives around my block had a shepherd who has attacked my dog multiple times and had to be put down (read previous blog) and she came up and asked how she was doing with the kids. She did great and loved all the little kids. She was acting tough against a little beagle that she has not liked for wuite the while. But got her to chill long enough for it to go by. (Destiny can be intimidating) She growled when a few adult men came up to her...i corrected her but i honestly dont mind the little bit of protection she gives cuz i did not see them comming.
I plan on doing a lot more and i have quite the way to go but she has improved A LOT. She can accept strangers and dogs. I am proud of her but not getting excited too fast. I'm hoping befire she gets too old i can get her into the dog park at least once. Next big event is the walkathon! But not till spring. So lets get through another harsh Wisconsin winter =P
