Home Date: August 8, 2002
Jaeger is the biggest clown around. He runs like crazy, points, retrieves, and swims. Some of his more interesting traits include hording socks from the laundry basket, getting all the girl dogs at the dog park to chase him around, "talking" back to me, dragging his blanket in front of the heater for a nap, pointing all the frogs out to me at the lake, and drooling all over himself when he sees someone eating. He has gone through basic obedience and is getting good at tricks. This includes the "bang" trick but it seems to take a few good shots (meanwhile he's rolling around) before he actually plays dead. He's great with kids, despite being a bit on the hyper side, and typically does a dance around the cat (in an I-want-to-play-but-you-scare-me sort of way).

To date all of our foster dogs have been through NorCal GSP Rescue. This rescue is dedicated to the German Shorthaired Pointer, a breed renowned for their pointing, trailing and retreiving abilities. Each of our fosters came to us from kill shelters in Northern California where we saved them from "death row".
We believe that no animal should be killed due to lack of space or initiative. Which is why we've dedicated ourselves to a vegan lifestyle and why we promote adoption instead of buying.
Please opt to adopt!
Our first foster we named "Kuno", the German word for "brave". The thing was, Kuno was anything but brave when we first released him from the shelter. He came to us with teeth worn from chewing on bars and urine stains down his legs. Most likely he was previously kept in a cage day in and day out.
Since Kuno had never been inside a house, he was very timid. We coaxed him in and he darted around, belly as close to the floor as he could get it.
After a much needed bath, dental work, training and socialization, Kuno began to fit into his name. Despite his previous ill treatment, we were surprised with how quickly he came around. Soon he was the happy little guy we know him to be. He was adopted by a man out in the country where he'd have plenty of space to roam around with a new GSP brother.
Morty came to us with a bad case of Kennel Cough. The shelter didn't have the money to spend on making Morty well, so it had turned into pneumonia. We pulled him from the shelter when he was on his last days. The shelter staff had named him "Mortimar" and we decided to keep it at "Morty".
Morty seemed in relatively good condition, despite the Kennel Cough he had gotten at the shelter and the odd bumps he had on the top of his head, on his shoulder and along his rib-cage.
When checking Morty's x-rays for improvements, the veterinarian pointed out that the small bumps were BB's stuck under his skin. We guessed that Morty had wandered onto someones yard and that they had shot at him to get him to leave.
Morty was also quite the escape artist. He had managed to dig out of the yard a few times so we lined the bottom of the fence with chicken wire. Then he managed to push a board out of the fence and squeeze out. After securing the board back in, we decided to play it safe and keep him tethered when in the yard alone, only to find his colar (still latched) under the fence without Morty in it! Luckily we had since worked with him on his "come" command and when we found him, he came running right back to us.
Morty was adopted by a wonderful (escape artist savy) couple who already had an older GSP, a spunky GSP mix and a little Jack Russell. Later we got word that the family had added to their mix another GSP from the same rescue we were fostering for. It sounds like Morty now has all the family he could hope for.
Ida was a sweet older gal who had obviously had a few litters of pups and somehow had injured her left eye. We took her on as a foster knowing that she had contracted heartworm and that the treatment would be long and enduring.
The rescue had previously placed her with another foster home, but the couple already had their hands full with a toddler and other dogs. Her medical treatment and seperation issues were too much for them to handle, so we stepped in to give her the quiet household she'd need during her recovery.
Fortunately, we found out that Ida was in the first stages of heartworm. She proved resilient to the treatment and was her happy self in no time. However, her seperation issues proved to be difficult to remedy.
At first we thought that Ida's didn't really have any seperation issues, but after getting a complaint from our neighbors about her continuous barking, we knew we had to find a solution to her anxiety. After unsuccessful treatment with desensitization, chew toys, a citronella colar, and even taking her to school with us, we had begun to loose hope. Fortunately for our neighbors, we found the perfect sollution to keeping a dog busy while you're away - a food despensing ball.
After many months with us, our lovely Ida was adopted by a couple with two teenagers. Their current dog was an elderly Labrador who also had seperation issues and so they were well dedicated to keeping their dog company. They immediately fell in love with Ida's persistent charms.
These gorgeous pups were from a litter of six born in a kill shelter. The shelter was running short of money and so didn't get the litter immunized on time. With their immune systems weakened by Parvo Virus, they came down with a nasty case of Demodectic mange. As if the virus wasn't bad enough, the mange had left them bald, bumpy and misserable with itch.
Sadly, two pups of the litter had succumbed to their infections, leaving the other four in desperate need of rescue. NorCal GSP quickly contacted all of it's fosters for help and two families responded, taking in two pups each.
Although difficult to look at, the three month olds were very sweet and onery. They took up residence at our house as if they knew that they were going to end up there, sleeping in the big dog bed and chewing at stuffed toys.
Liebe was definitely the worse off of the bunch. By scratching and chewing at herself she provoked an onslaught of deep skin infections. Her face had swolled up to almost twice it's size before erupting in pus. We rushed her to the vet for a long series of medication.
After a few months with us, we rejoiced as the pups started showing signs of improvement. Small hairs began erupting on their faces and soon they looked like pups again. Our last days with them were bitter sweet as we chased them along the beach and played with them in the surf. Both pups were adopted shortly after their recovery into new forever homes.
When thinking about adding to your family, please consider adopting a companion in need from your local rescue or shelter. These dogs deserve all the love you can give them.
Thanks for reading!
