My Dogs

Birthday: December 18, 2002
Breed: Jack Russell Terrier
Secondary Breed: Mutt
Size: Small
Nickname: "My angel!" and "[My] precious!" (creepy, I know)
From: A family couldn't keep/didn't want him and was giving him away for free. If no one took him, he was going to the shelter/pound.
Home Date: June 28, 2004
My husband (fiancé at the time) and I were up North going to Bowling Green State University. During a trip to visit family back in Texas, we saw an ad in the paper for a free terrier mix to a good home. The ad said he was already fixed, housetrained, and current on all shots. We were looking for a dog and figured it was too good to be true. We went and saw him and took him home with us and then to school in Ohio. Even though the previous owner said that her daughters were allergic to him, they had him for over a year and just now thought the “allergies” were too much and had to get rid of him (for free, no less). I thought there might be something else going on but we loved him anyway. Turns out, Spanky has a very major anxiety issue and a very minor seizure disorder. In the plane on the way to Ohio, he busted out of his under-seat carrier and took a walk down the aisle. If left inside home alone, unconfined to a crate, he destroys anything he can reach. I quickly guessed that these were probably the reasons he was so willingly given away. Loving him as much as we did, we were able to work around all these things and he now has a very high quality of life with a family that would go to the ends of the Earth for him (sometimes it feels like we’ve made the trip a couple times J). Some of Spanky’s best features include: excellent obedience (most of the time), total loyalty, and awesome chick magnet for our single friends.
Spanky is our angel and, as far as I’m concerned, the perfect dog.

Pearl was given to the Humane Society because a woman had gotten her from a friend who’s dog recently had puppies. The woman took Pearl home and started potty training and some basic manners. After a week or two, the woman’s husband decided Pearl would eventually be too big to live in the duplex they lived in with a few other adults, and thus she was taken to the Humane Society. The very next day we saw her there. We had been looking for another dog for a couple of weeks. Pearl was not only beautiful and friendly, but apparently popular, too. There were three other families interested in adopting her. We were somewhere near the middle of the wait list but one by one the families were denied because they either had unsuitable environment or they didn’t follow the proper procedure for adoption. Some people wanted to adopt her without first spending time with her or even introducing their other pet! Luckily, we were able to spend lots of time with her and she loved her future “brother,” Spanky. I still think sometimes she loves him more than us. At just 4 months so far, she is quickly mastering potty training, sit, and walking on a leash. As a bully breed, we are putting a lot of emphasis on good manners, especially around other dogs. At the end of the day, she just wants to curl up next to you and fall asleep with her head in your lap.
