My LEAST favorite time of the year.

Well it’s here again. My least favorite time of the year, FIREWORKS SEASON! It has to be the worst thing for us dogs. Those big loud noisemakers, exploding all around! Here a boom, there a boom, everywhere a boom boom. Oh how I hate it, and my parent’s dread it as much as me. They hate seeing me so scared and upset. And what has to be worse is that it’s not only one day. It seems to go for weeks.

I wasn’t always so afraid by fireworks. I never really liked them but as a pup but it didn’t seem to faze me too much. Then a couple of years ago we were at a parade, just sitting there enjoying ourselves when out of now where . . BOOM! Some one fired a musket right in front of me. I went crazy! I began frantically trying to get out of there. Of course mom and dad felt terrible. They would have never brought me there had they expected that. They scooped me up and tried to hurry me out of there but the damage was already done. Now when ever I hear sudden loud noises I freak out.

Just the other day mom was trying to open a small bag of potato chips and the bag popped. I was out of there in a flash. Trying to find a safe place to hide. Daddy yelled at her but I knew it was an accident. She would never do that to me on purpose. Then over the weekend we went to dinner at our friend’s house. Mom and dad were invited for dinner and they graciously said I could come along. My parents brought a bottle of champagne and of course no one was thinking that when they “popped” the cork, it would scare me, but I think you know what happened. Yup, I went scurrying to find the safest place I could. I ended up spending most of the time in the bathroom.

I guess that was just a sign of things to come. Then the next night I was home in the safety of my home enjoying my dinner when it started. The real thing, the dreaded FIREWORKS! I was so thankful when it started to rain, but of course it’s only delaying the inevitable. Those fireworks will be going off every day now until they run out.

Mom went to the attic and dragged out my old crate. She cleaned it up and placed it in a corner of her room. She made sure it had things with her and daddy’s scent. She put his T-shirt over the top so I could smell it through the holes, and put a blanket and little pillow that had her scent on it. Then she made sure all the windows were closed and the radio was on with some soft music to help drown out the noise. Of course the pills the vet gave her will come in handy too, but mom is hoping we won’t have to use those too much.

Mom just wishes there was some place we could all go for a few days where there would be NO fireworks. I wish that too, but of course I don’t think we will find that place, so I will just huddle in my little fort mom made me when things get real scary. For those of you that don’t get scared by the fireworks, you are so lucky. And for those of you that do, I hope you all make it through fireworks season not too shaken. Good luck to all and let’s just hope they run out of those nasty noisemakers real soon.

Hi Samilou,

I read your blog and not that it is any more comforting - but I do the exact same thing!

Mom is terrified just knowing how I will react come Friday.  We are praying for rain here to.  But then that gives us another problem - I am terrified of thunder and lightening!

Mom has tried everything imaginable to help me but nothing works.  I get so upset that I run around the house and try to climb behind the washer or the television set.  Many times I cut my paws trying to climb up or go into things.  Mommy doesn't want to give me any medication either but it may be my only hope come Friday.  Stupid people - why don't they give that money to Dog Shelters instead of letting it go up in smoke?

Good luck my little friend.

Luv,

Gigi

Sami, we are so sorry that 1) you are so afraid of fireworks and 2) that you don't live close to us cause we would get together and snuggle with you - you could lie between us and we would protect you. Since you are far away, just close your eyes and imagine your protectors (that would be us) are there with you. We will be there in our hearts.

Wags and kisses,

ZQ

Sorry you are scared of fireworks.  My friend Balto hates them too.  But last year, when he saw that I wasn't scared, he stopped barking and just snuggled in with me and went to sleep.  I hope its not too bad for you this year.

We're sorry about the way the noise scars you, Sami. Mom used to have a beagle that was going to be used as a 'gun dog' until the dummy as$ owner saw how the noise terrified her and sent her to be....well, you know. (Happy ending. My mom rescued her) Your mom is really smart about the crate. Her Sadie was afraid of everything, but felt safer in her crate so it was a part of the furniture all her life. This noisy time can't end soon enough for you and all the other doggies it scares.

Soothing cuddles,

Astrid

Sami-I am sorry that you don't like the noises at this time of the year. I live by a Country Club and they have fireworks just about every Friday and Saturday night during wedding season so I hear them all the time. I am not afraid. Now, if I hear a siren from an ambulance or police car I will howl this very un-lady like howl that scared my Mommy the first time she heard it. Be safe, lil Sami.

Oh Sweet Sami Lou...Tucker here...yup.....I feel the same way you do too!  I don't think there is a place around that we can go, to get away from the noise and stuff...I am the only one here in this house that it bothers. My sister's don't mind it at all. .

I should come over and huddle with you in your little den....mom bought me a lil kid's tent....it has cars all over it. Or you can come here in my tent.

Hugs Tucker
