A Mother's Day Tribute
Mother’s Day is only a few days away and it got me thinking about my mommy. I am truly mommy’s “little girl”. She knows I am a doggy but sometimes she just can’t help but baby me. ( I know Caesar wouldn’t approve.) How can she not though, I am just so cute and lovable. BOL She says I am spoiled, but not spoiled rotten. I am a good girl, so she must be doing something right. My mom loves me very much, and the feeling is quite mutual. She takes very good care of me. She always makes time to play with me and takes me with her whenever she can. I even get to go on most vacations with her and daddy. I have been to Vermont, the White Mountains, Maine and Philly. She does some stuff I don’t like, but I know it is for my own good. She watches what I eat, gives me baths, and makes sure all my shots are up to date. She also buys me lots of clothes which can be annoying. I don’t mind wearing my coat in the winter, but other clothes? (Back to where she thinks I’m human. BOL) Mommy is probably a good mom because she takes after two very special ladies that I sadly never had the chance to meet. One is my Great Grandma Lydia. She got to live a wonderful long life to the ripe old age of 94. She worked until she was in her 70’s, taking a bus everyday to work and never asking for a ride. She would baby sit for my mom and her sisters and turn the night into a party. She would bring them candy and they would turn on the Lawrence Welk Show, push the coffee table back and dance around. She was full of life and love. She loved visits with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mom says she would have adored me. The other special woman is the one I was named after. My Grandma Louise. (Hence the Sami LOU). She was my mommy’s mother. She sadly lived too short a life and passed away only a couple of months after mom & dad got married. She was two months shy of her 65th birthday. Grandma Louise was also full of life and love. Her family meant everything to her, and she always put them first. Even as her children got older, she was always there for them. Grandma Louise liked to have fun though too. She did this silly thing mom called jazz a size, and liked to bowl. Even starting her own league. She loved to watch the Red Sox and Celtics. Mom says she was a fanatic. She would dress in all green on days the Celtics played and red for the Sox. She had these big earrings the size of ping pong balls that had the insignias of her teams on them. You always knew when a game was on because you could hear mom cheering from down the street. So this Mother’s Day I will try and honor not only my mom but her mom and her grandma. I know she misses them very much So I will be a good girl and show mommy lots of love. I was going to change my background, but mom says grandma would be so proud of me to be showing my support to the Red Sox To all of your mommy’s I say Happy Mother’s Day! Wags and Licks- Sami
Happy Pet Parents Day
I love my parents very much. They take good care of me and spend as much time with me as possible. I truly am their baby girl. I thought I would start by letting them sleep in but to my surprise they were up extra early today. I guess they wanted to get all their chores out of the way so they could spend the day with me. I helped with the laundry by chasing after that stray sock that fell out of the basket. I couldn’t cook them a big breakfast but I could sit nicely and not beg. (Not too much anyway.) I also helped with clean up by licking up the floor. Then we went to our favorite park. I thought I would let them lead the way for once. I usually love to run up the hills and rocks and walk through the woods, but today I thought I would take it easy on them and stick to the path. (Well mostly to the path.) When it was time to do my poops I was thoughtful enough to do them near the barrel so Mom didn’t have to carry that poop bag on our walk. When Mom had to run in the store I stayed with Dad in the car and tried not to whine too much. I made sure to give lots of extra kisses today too. Well, it’s almost time for bed and just one thing left to do. Maybe I will be nice and not hog the whole bed tonight. Hope everyone had a Great Pet Parent’s Day, I know I did. -Sami
Why I've been MIA
Sorry I have been MIA. I just got back from vacation. I went to Philly with my parents for a few days. I was going to let everyone know I would be gone for a bit but on Friday the site was real slow so we logged off and didn’t get a chance to log back on before we left. I was a little miffed because I missed denim days and didn’t get to say good bye to my friends, but I suppose I can’t be too mad at my parents. After all they did take me with them. They usually do let me go when I can, but sometimes I have to go stay with my aunty. She is very nice, but I love going on trips. Especially if it means I get to stay with my parents. So when I saw those suitcases come out of the closet, I wasn’t sure what was in store. Lucky me, I got to go!
It was a really long ride to get there but I didn’t mind. I love riding in the car. We got to stay at a very nice dog friendly hotel called Lowes. When we checked in I was given my own doggy gift bag. It had dishes and treats just for me. I have never stayed in a big hotel before where we had to go up and down on an elevator. In our room there was a really big bed. (I figured there was plenty of room for me to allow my parents to share.) There was even a special blanket on the bed just for me. We didn’t order room service, but if we did they even had a special pet friendly menu.
So Philly is as clean and friendly as I heard. Every where I went people wanted to say hello to me. A couple of them even asked permission to take my picture. Even most of the stores allowed me in. Not just in my carriage or being held, some even said it was fine to put me down. They even had treats for me. And of course we had to check out some doggy stores. (All the shopping can’t be just for mommy.) And there are lots of outdoor dinning places that I could go to as well. Of course we had to check out the famous Geno’s for some cheese steaks. I think that was daddy’s favorite part.
We did lots and lots of walking and I never thought I would say this, but I’m glad mom bought my new carriage. It it much more comfortable than my old one and I did need to take some breaks. My little paws sure got a work out. There was one place I had to do myself though. Do you remember the scene in the movie Rocky when he ran up all those steps? I decided I wanted to re-enact that myself. Of course I had to stop in between to let my parents catch up.
We took lots of pictures and hopefully mom won’t take forever to post them. I had a great trip but like Toto said, “there is no place like home”. (I know Dorothy gets credit for that, but Toto did say it first.) It’s good to be back, I missed all my pals. Mommy says I may have to get off the ‘puter soon so if I will be sure to sneak on as soon as I can and finish my barks. Hope everyone had a great week. Wags and licks -Sami
When there are no squirrels, I guess the ducks will do.
I went to my favorite park again yesterday. Everyone keeps saying spring is almost here but I don’t think the squirrels know that because there wasn’t one to be found. The pond is almost all thawed and the ducks and geese have returned, but where oh where are the squirrels? It’s been a long winter and I am ready for hunting season. This is the year, I can feel it that I am going to catch one of those pesky varmits. Of course mom won’t be very happy if I do, but I promise to let it go after I catch it.
So anyway, I was tracking everywhere yesterday looking for any signs of just one little ole squirrel, but nope, not a one! As I was going by the pond, some ducks decided to venture up onto dry land. having nothing better to do I decided to give chase. Plop right back into the water they went. I did this a few times and soon got very bored so I went back on my walk, sniffing and tracking.
After we circled around, we came back to the pond again. I sat and watched for a while and then decided again, what the heck and right after those ducks I went. This time I headed right into the water! Now this is especially interesting as I usually don’t like getting wet. Dirty, I have no problems with. but wet? Nope not me. I guess I was just frustrated with no squirrels to chase and I decided it was worth it. I tell you though, I thought I was fast, but boy can my dad move! He came and snatched me up just as I was going in. He started muttering something about good thing he had a towel in the car and was holding me kind of funny. Gee, they keep wanting to get me in the water so I finally do and they complain.
Well that ended my adventure because mom and dad thought they better take me home and clean me up. I heard dad saying maybe I would like swimming this summer. Maybe if they make it worth my while I’ll give it a try. All I know is summer is a long way off and I’ll just be happy for spring and the return of the squirrels.
I hate windy days!
What they say about New England weather is true. If you don’t like it, wait five minutes. This morning was very dark and rainy. I thought I would cut mom some slack and wait for it to stop before going out to do my business. The rain stopped and the sun came out and because I was so patient mom decided to let me go for a long walk. Problem is, it was verrrrryyy windy!
I don’t like it when it’s too windy. I’m afraid the wind will lift me up and carry me off. Today was really bad, there was stuff blowing everywhere. To make matters worse, it was trash day. There were plastic bottles and jugs everywhere that had blown out of people recycle bins. Not to mention the empty trash barrels rolling down the middle of the street. I was barking and growling my whole walk. Mom say I was acting like a scaredy cat.
Scared had nothing to do with it. I was annoyed that my nice morning walk was wasn’t so nice. It was like playing dodge em trying to side step all the mess. And how would she like it if one of those big green rubber barrels was headed for her? Sure, she is big enough to knock it out of the way, but if I get conked with one of those, I’m down for the count.
Well the good thing is most of that dirty snow is washed away, the sun is now out and it is quite warm. (46 here in New England feels great after a long winter.) And there were plenty of barrels around so Mom didn’t have to carry my poopy bag all the way home.
My Birthday
Well, I’m a whole five years old now. Mom says she can’t believe it. It seems just like yesterday that we were celebrating the first one. But then she says she can’t remember ever not having me. Gee she gets so confusing. My birthday was actually on Saturday but Dad made plans to go to my uncle’s house. Mom said it would be alright but that meant we had to extend my celebration to include the whole weekend. Besides, if it wasn’t leap year I would have had it on Friday anyway. That sounded good to me.
So That was the first day we celebrated. (Friday) Mom took me to not one, but TWO of my favorite stores. I should have known something was up because she had to make sure I looked extra beautiful. First we went to Petedge to pick up some things she ordered for me. I guess that was going to be a surprise. But we got to walk around the store and pick out more stuff. There were lots of doggies there that day, so I was quite happy. Mom says I was especially good so our next stop was to my most favorite of all stores. . .PETCO! There we got to shop some more and visit with more dogs. Boy I was in heaven.
Saturday I got to open my presents. I got a lot of neat stuff. I got a new carriage and carry bag. Dad says those were really for Mom. He doesn’t understand that I spend time in those so my comfort is important and so isn’t being seen in the newest and most stylish things! My new carriage is blue, but it’s got special wheels and I sit much higher so I can see better and more importantly, my bottom won’t vibrate so much. My carry bag is very soft pastel colors and a paisley print.
Of course I got stuff that was really for me, toys and treats. My favorite was my new Red Sox ball. I love playing with that more than anything and I go through them so quick. I have gotten really good at catching and throwing it back.
Then there was this other thing I got. I’m not sure how I feel about it yet. It’s a tunnel with three extensions that all have openings and one on the top. It took me a while to actually climb throughit. Mom sprinkled treats in it to lure me through. The only thing is it has these fish dangling from it. I sure hope she didn’t buy me a cat toy. Doesn’t she know I am a dog! Ok confuse me with being human, but a cat? Geesh!
So that afternoon we went to my uncle’s house. I of course got to go and they did bring a cake for me. Everyone sang Happy Birthday and I got to blow out the candle. (With a little help of course.) We were there really late and I couldn’t wait to get home and go to bed.
Sunday we all slept in. Boy we were bushed! Then after a realxing morning we went for a drive. I love my car rides! I was so surprised because I got to go to another store. Petsmart! Wow, three in one weekend! Gotta love these birthdays. Of course being a Sunday there were lots of dogs to socialize with. After that we went home and just relaxed some more.
Well that’s about all. I think I may need an extra day to catch up on my beauty rest. Thanks for all the birthday wishes. -Sami
Sami's trip to the groomer's
Yesterday morning I was sleeping peacefully in my bed. (Ok, so it’s really my parent’s bed.) After some tummy rubs and smooches, Mommy carries me downstairs. Hmmm. . .something must be going on. Then I see her go for the dreaded (duh…duh…duh) BRUSH & COMB!!! Oh how I hate those things! Well, it must mean we are going somewhere. Oh if only I knew. Then after pulling out half of my hair (ok, slight exaggeration on my half), she gets me ready to go in the car.
We pull up to some place that I had never been. Eager to go investigate, Mom looks at me and says, “don’t be too excited Sami, you are going to be mad at me”. Why would I be mad? Oh no. . .is it a new vet? Are you going to leave me someplace? The we go through the doors and I knew it was worse. . .THE GROOMERS!!!
Now I haven’t been to a groomer since just before last summer. Mom told the dumb lady she did not want me puppy cut. She even left a picture. Then when she picked me up she saw I hadn’t been puppy cut, it was SHORTER than that. Picture if you will, a military cut or wiffle on a dog. Yup, can you imagine? needless to say she was not happy and I never went back there.
Well I haven’t needed a hair cut since then. Mom and Dad have been giving me baths, cleaning my ears, trimming my nails, etc. So no need for a new groomer. I guess she decided it was time. So after much investigation, (talking with other dog parent’s and looking on line), she finds this new place and decides to give it a try. (What. . .I get no vote on this?)
She had called the place and asked a lot of questions. Seems they crate dry and keep us in crates while we are waiting our turn and to be picked up. Mom explained that I was not use to being crated and didn’t care for that method of drying. They said they would try and acccomodate us. They had Mom bring me just before my appointment and saud they would dry me by hand. Then they would call when I was almost ready so that it would minimize my time in the crate. When she dropped me off she met with the groomer who seemed very nice. The girl asked Mom very detailed questions about how she wanted me to look. (My length, my eyes, tail, ears, pony, paws, etc.) Mom actually felt pretty confident leaving me there.
After about an hour Mom got a call that I was almost done. When she got there I was already and instead of crating me they let me hang out behind the counter with the lady upstairs. When I saw Mom I was very happy and not traumatized at all. She of course gave me a very thorough looking over. I looked and smelt great! She was thrilled with how I looked. When daddy saw me he was very happy as well.
Looks like we finally found a groomer we will keep. This doesn’t mean I like being groomed, but if I have to, then this is the place for me. There’s just one thing I want to know, if I was going to the groomer’s, why did Mom have to torture me BEFORE we went?

If A Dog Was the Teacher:
You Would Learn Stuff Like: When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.
Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.
Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure ecstasy.
When it’s in your best interest, practice obedience.
Let others know when they’ve invaded your territory.
Take naps.
Stretch before rising.
Run, romp and play daily.
Thrive on attention and let people touch you.
Avoid biting when someone annoys you (a simple growl will do.)
On warm days, stop to lie on your back in the grass
.
On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree.
When you’re happy dance around and wag your entire body!
No matter how often you’re scolded, don’t buy into the guilt thing and pout. Run right back and make friends.
Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.
Eat with gusto and enthusiasm. (Even though you don’t like it. if you like the person who made it), but Stop when you have had enough.
Be loyal. Never pretend to be something you’re not!
If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it. even though many call you an old hound dog, and say you must stop.
When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by and nuzzle them gently.
And finally enjoy life and the wind in your ears.
What I got for Christmas
I guess I was a good girl this year because I got lots of presents. I got treats, and toys, and a new bed. Well actually it’s kind of a house. See I like to hide sometimes so I have a house made out of cloth that we keep in the living room. It’s where I go when I want to be alone or feel safe. Problem is, it was starting to fall apart. So Mommy and Daddy bought me a new one. I love it! It has a much cushier bottom than the old one. The other one just had a floor, but this one has a nice thick soft pillow.
Other people gave me gifts too. I am so lucky to have so many friends. The chocolates gave me a squirrel to help keep my instincts up, and the sheps gave me a duckie. I tossed that thing so many times, I think I broke it’s quacker. My auntie gave me a Coach collar and leash, but mommy says we probably have to return it. While it is very styish, it’s just too heavy for my petite little frame. And of course Wesley and I exchanged gifts.
The only present I didn’t really like was this remote control car my mommy bought me. She thought maybe I would like to chase it. Oh good mom, want me to chase real cars too? Well this thing is noisy and scary and I just bark at it really loud. (Kind of like I do when she brings the vacumn out.) Well the worst part is, I think it is possesed. We were watching TV when we thought we heard the wheels turning. Then the next morning when we woke up we heard this noise from downstairs. We went down to investigate and saw the car had moved. Then when mom was in the kitchen, she heard me barking and came in to find the car moving all by itself. No thanks mom, that’s one gift we can take back.
Other than that I liked all my gifts. I got the wrapping paper off my bag of treats and then almost got the bag open. They had a tough time getting that one away from me. I also got some great new chew bones. And of course getting to spend time with my parents was the best gift of all. I hope everyone has a Happy New Year. -Wags and Licks to all, Sami
