Dog Days of Summer

Listen up...Starting tomorrow through August 11th it's the Dog Days of Summer.  Now we really aren't sure what that means but we think we are supposed to get special treats and toys, extra belly rubs and scratches, carried around on special pillows and treated like royalty every single day through August 11.  Well, we think we should get that anyway but we're pretty sure our parents HAVE to do it now!

Thank you for posting this. What wonderful news. Our parents only got one special day, but we get almost two months. That's a great deal we think. We will remind our parents every day that it is another special day for us.

Hope I don't get slapped with a copyright infringement suit for copy and pasting this. Interesting, huh?

..."The term "Dog Days" was used by the Greeks (see, e.g., Aristotle's Physics, 199a2), as well as the ancient Romans (who called these days caniculares dies (days of the dogs)) after Sirius (the "Dog Star"), the brightest star in the heavens besides the Sun.

Popularly believed to be an evil time "when the seas boiled, wine turned sour, dogs grew mad, and all creatures became languid, causing to man burning fevers, hysterics, and phrensies" - Brady’s Clavis Calendarium, 1813.

The Dog Days originally were the days when Sirius, the Dog Star, rose just before or at the same time as sunrise (heliacal rising), which is no longer true owing to precession of the equinoxes. The ancients sacrificed a brown dog at the beginning of the Dog Days to appease the rage of Sirius, believing that that star was the cause of the hot, sultry weather."...

It came from Wikipedia. When I was a little girl over a hundred years ago, my mom told me dogs got 'touchy' during the hot weather and that's why they called them dog days. Guess she was kinda right.
