My Blog Entry
bad news
Hello everyone
my youngest lab Cooper has been diagnosed with HD and we are waiting at the moment to get up the money for a TPO.Has anyone’s dog experienced this procedure and can you please tell us what to expect?
I keep reading that we should wait but I don’t want Cooper to be in pain and if we DO wait, the pain control may be out of our hands.
Having total hip replacements down the track would be a finacial nightmare so this seems to be our only choice.
ANY feedback will be EXTREMELY appreciated.
Thanks

So sorry to hear about Cooper! Was the diagnosis made by a specialist? Reason I ask is that my first DoberGirl was diagnosed with HD by my regular vet, but the orthopedist he referred us to, felt it wasn't bad enough to warrant surgery, and the acute pain she was experiencing was due to a soft tissue injury. (He was right - with meds and rest, she recovered fully, and lived to be almost 13 with no more hip problems.)
If the diagnosis is accurate, please contact the breeder you got Cooper from. S/he should know about it, as it tends to be hereditary. Here in the USA, we've got the OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) that rates hips and elbows. Dunno if you have something similar in Australia, but, if you do, the breeder should probably have Cooper's parents evaluated to see if maybe one of them has bad hips and is possibly passing the trait along. (In which case, I would hope they'll stop breeding that dog. Who knows, they might even help with the cost of the TPO.)
Can't help you with personal experience with the TPO, but maybe if you post in the Health forum? If you don't find the info you need there, c'mon over to the IMOM forums: http://www.imom.org/community/ .
IMOM is a charitable group in the US that raises money for pets who need care their humans can't afford. We've had a few who needed TPO, so I know there are people there with experience. You'd be welcome to post in the Introductions area, or "Dog Daze", with any questions you have. (Most of the threads are for animals either in the process of raising funds, or who have completed fund raising, but there are areas where everyone is welcome to ask questions and share information, support and encouragement. And, of course, you're welcome to read the threads of those who have been through what you're dealing with now, and, if the owners are still active, I'm sure they wouldn't mind if you chimed in on their threads, too.)
Wishing Cooper a full recovery!
