How Safe is your Yard???
My dog passed away two weeks ago after eating poisonous seeds from a plant many people keep in their yard. She ate Sago Palm Seeds... most common on the coast... Galveston, Houston, anywhere in California and Florida...
I had no idea these seeds could be so deadly! PLEASE educate yourself! Know what plants you have in your yard, front AND back, and make sure they're not toxic. If a dog even licks the bark of a sago palm tree they could die.
Other common plants such as Lantana and Azaleas are poison as well. Below is a list of plants to watch out for. The ones in bold are the most toxic.

Bingo! That's it. Holy Doggie Doo! Thank you so much. Most of it is out back where I can't reach it, but apparently it propigates and migrates rather well. Some popped up next to our woodshed and Daddy cut it down and sprayed the roots. And I do know that there is a bit of it in the side flower bed..I don't ever mess with it, BUT...I will pass the info on to Mommy and Daddy, just in case I ever get tempted. And thanks for your post.

Hi,
I just read your post about Miss Maya. I'm so sorry. But she'll always be in your heart and nobody can ever take that away. I do have a question.. you mention Pokeweek in your list. I tried to look it up and I'm not finding anything. I'm asking because we have alot of something that someone told us was "Poke" in our yard and if in fact it is the same thing, even though I don't ever bother it, I want to make sure that Mommy and Daddy do something about it so it doesn't tempt me. What we have has these little berries on it and the stem gets pretty thick and it's milky inside the stem. They get pretty big. Just wondering if you might happen to know about this one in particular. Thanks. Sierra

We are so sorry about your loss, she was a beautiful dog. We had no idea that so many common plants could be that dangerous to dogs. We will be checking our yard very carefully. Here in Illinois the winter kills off a lot of them, but they return in the spring. Our next door neighbor works for a local landscaper nursery and she has a golden retreiver, I'm going to ask her for help to identify what we have around our subdivision. The lake climate makes the area pretty fertile. Thank-you for the warning, you may have saved several pets by your blog. Kes, Gracie, Pearl

Hi Lee & Pack ~ So sorry to hear this. Today on a photo shoot (FL), a dog was grabbing some orange seeds from a palm tree. I told the owner about your posting and we promptly picked up all the seeds. Just wanted to let you know, that your experience will help others. tina
