Rest in Peace
Hi my name is Kitsune (keet-soo-nay) but everybody calls me Kitsu. I am a big dog in a small dog’s body. In fact, my pictures can be quite deceiving. I weigh 20 pounds which is average weight for a male Shiba Inu, and in pictures many people think I am a large dog. People are surprised when they go to a dog park and see a Shiba Inu and realize we are big dogs but in much smaller packages than they realized.
When my Mom and Dad adopted me they thought I looked like a little red fox, and Kitsune is the word for "red fox" in Japanese. I am a Shiba Inu which is one of the oldest breeds originating in Japan. Shiba Inus were used primarily for flushing small prey and even hunted wild boar. Shibas are also known as the “barkless” dogs, however I am a great guard dog and always give a warning bark when someone comes to the door or is outside. I am very protective of my family. I also yodel occasionally. Shiba Inus are known to be fastidiously clean and housetrain faster than many cats. I get walked three times a day. I am a snow dog with a double coat and am considered a Northern or Nordic breed. My family was looking for a dog that would get along with children and cats, and also a smaller size. My Mom had a Siberian Husky and my Dad had a Rottie so they were used to bigger breeds. But Mom had a spinal fusion after a car accident and needed a smaller dog that she could walk and not get hurt in case of a big pull on the leash. My curled tail looks like it got dipped in a can of paint :)
Foxes are a common subject of Japanese folklore. Stories depict them as intelligent beings possessing magical abilities that increase with their age and wisdom. Foremost among these is the ability to assume human form. Kitsune have become closely associated with Inari, a Shinto kami or spirit, and serve as his messengers. This role has reinforced the fox's supernatural significance. According to Japanese folklore, the more tails a kitsune has - they may have as many as nine - the older, wiser, and more powerful it is. Because of their potential power and influence, some people make offerings to them as to a deity. My family liked the positive story behind the name, and they feel gifted to have me as their furbaby.
My Mom was originally looking to adopt a mutt or rescue dog. She came across an ad for a purebred Shiba Inu four month old pup, so she answered it. The woman’s male dog did not get along with me as he had to be the alpha male. Shiba Inus by nature almost always have to be alpha males, so that was a situation that was obviously not going to work out. Mom was wondering why the woman hadn’t researched my breed more carefully. When Mom asked questions about me, the answers given were very vague. My background is somewhat questionable, because once Mom was there to meet me, she found out I had been given no shots at all. Also I had to be kept in my kennel at all times so that the other large male dog wouldn’t attack me. My family believes I may have been a pup that didn’t get placed from a backyard breeder and needed to go somewhere … and fast. I didn't have any of the initial basic shots newborn pups get. Plus I was 4 months old and getting close to not being a "new puppy".
When the woman kenneled the other dogs at the house so Mom and Dad could meet me, she finally let me out of my kennel. I was really sad being pent up in that kennel for so long all of the time. I immediately ran right up to Mom. I was so happy, wagging my tail, whining, ears back and licking Mom all over. Well Mom fell in love with me at first sight and that was it. She looked at Dad, and he said, “Let’s give them the adoption fee and go, we have to take him home with us.” They were afraid that the next step for me was the local animal shelter or just dumped on any family that would take me. Mom had me checked out and had tests done and brought me up to date on all of my shots.
I had a rough start, but needless to say I am now one very spoiled Shiba!! I have a Mom, a Dad, and four human siblings ages (10), (12), (17) and (18). I also allow three cats to live with me, Bandit who is a Ragdoll kitty and named for the little mask on his face, Midnight the black cat who is all good luck, and then there is the female feline diva of the house, Cuddles. She is a tiger and Siamese mix and she talks all of the time. Mom feeds me my kibble mixed in with chicken and rice, and sometimes serves my dinner on the fine china. I have a fenced in yard, however as Shibas are known to try to dig out from under fences in an attempt to go back to their native homeland of Japan, I have a very long dog run in the backyard. It feels like I am running free. Mom supports Shiba Rescue, and just bought me a cool Lupine lead, harness and collar from them. She drives me around in her DogRover and basically spoils me like crazy, I have her so wrapped hehe. I am very friendly, love making new friends and welcome pal requests!!

Hi my name is Suki (soo-kee) which means "beloved" in Japanese. I was the smallest female in my litter. I am very petite and dainty and before I was named, my family called me "little girl". My family feels very lucky to have me. They had been looking to get a companion for Kitsu for awhile, and it had been challenging to say the least. After several trials and talking with the veterinarian, it was recommended to Mom that she get a younger female Shiba pup so as to have living situation which would work with an existing male Shiba. My Mom had looked everywhere for many months and finally decided to go with a very good breeder in our area. Mom has supported Shiba Rescue, has volunteered for the MSPCA and really want to find another canine from a rescue. Our breed is a rare one, and it came down to either not getting another dog at all or getting me. My family feels very blessed to have me, and so far I really like it here.
Kitsu is a bit of a ham, and is very outgoing and somewhat hyper, in the right amounts. My Mom says I am a little sweetheart, and I am on the shy and quiet side. My family thinks Kitsu and I compliment each other very well. I believe I am the yin to his yan.
My family refers to me as Kitsu's little sister. I follow him around everywhere, and I even copy what he does. At first there were a few growls from him so that I knew not to go near his chew toys, but we have had no issues as far as sharing food. My family also has these animals called cats here, so I went to make friends with the female one. I walked close to her, but she did not look very happy to see me. So I took a little chew bone of mine and walked toward her and dropped it on the floor. I nudged it towards her with my nose, and then I sat down on my little butt. Well, she didn't even say thank you and was quite rude! She started to look like she was going to do something, and then Kitsu swooped in and physically put himself in between me and the cat. He has stopped growling since, and I think he feels that I am not so much of a threat, and more as a little sister who needs protecting.
My family is so happy I am here, and they feel truly blessed that things are going well. I am still learning my way around here learning about the two leggers and the four leggers, as well as the spotted leopard gecko. I have my first visit to the Apple Country Animal Hospital veterinarian on Monday. Mom said something about having me have a checkup, and then make an appointment for me to get one of those cones Kitsu is wearing. I know Kitsu said there are a lot of great doggies on this site, and I cannot wait to meet them all.

Hey! Mom said since today is Egg Day and tomorrow is Sausage Pizza day she thought she would combine them and have Sausage and Egg Pizza Day. We don’t mind…we kinda like all of our food mixed together anyways. Hope you like it! Daddy is on vacation next week YAY! I don’t know what we’re going to do yet but mom says it’s spring cleaning time (she’s weird…she does it in the fall) and I heard her mention something about me (Chi) needing a haircut! So I really think I’m leaving for vacation to someplace else…how’s the weather where you live?

Hi Pack,
Every Friday is "Dog Whisperer" with Cesar Millan Day!
5th Season begins Oct. 10 at 8P et/pt on the Nat Geo Channel
Cesar returns in the premiere of his long-awaited 5th season! French Bulldog Bozley has had rules, boundaries, and limitations from day one, but that hasn't stopped him from developing a tenacious form of dog aggression! Owners Nidia & Sean Tatalovich have called in Cesar to give this Frenchie a lesson in hospitality. Next up, not even careful research could prepare Regina and Steve Risseeuw for their terrified Vizsla. Can Cesar help this dog on the run?
"Seg 77 Tenacious B Nidia & Sean Tatalovich saw a picture of French Bulldog Bozley on a breeders website and it was love at first sight. Sean is no stranger to dogs, but Nidia had never owned a dog before Bozley. They decided Bozley should be given boundaries from day one. He is not allowed to sleep in bed with them and he is crate trained. But six months and one dog trainer later, the little Frenchie started showing some attitude toward other dogs. He seemed really anxious in dog parks and bullied the other dogs. Now, two years and another trainer later, Sean and Nidia are at the end of their leash. Bozleys canine animosity has only worsened with time. When dogs pass the Tatalovichs front windows, Bozley goes nuts. He wont let anyone enter the house without trying to scare them away first. He charges, bites, jumps, and humps Sean and Nidias guests and now shows similar behavior on walks. Cesar is beckoned to help Bozley learn some lessons in hospitality. Seg 53 Ginger and the Type As Two years ago, Regina and Steve Risseeuw decided they wanted a dog. Like typical Type A personalities, they focused on their goal, researched the various breeds, and determined that the best breed for them would be a Vizsla. Regina and Steve wanted a dog that matched their personalities and energy, one they could run with and one that would get along with people and other dogs. They adopted Ginger, but Steve noticed tendencies that were more high strung than high energy. She would run with her tail tucked between her legs and ultimately developed a fear of cars and trucks. Soon, she refused to run and walk on busy streets. If Regina even tried to put the leash on Ginger during the day, she would lie down and tremble. Now, Steve and Regina are forced to walk under the cover of night in areas where there is no traffic. The Risseeuws are committed to Ginger and need Cesars expertise."
