Red Tailed Hawk Attack!

Dad and I were out on the deck watching the birds feed.  Dad always feeds the birds and squirrels.  Anyway,, there must have been about 4 dozen birds out there, cardinals, doves, sparrows, etc.  They were all  feeding having a good time when all of a sudden everyone took flight.  The sound was deafening (which was surprising).  And out of the corner of my eye I saw something coming down at almost a 90 degree angle,, the sound of the flapping wings was incredible.  Not from the feeders, but from the attacker.  He came down at such a hard angle and then almost stopped before he hit ground and turned upward and another severe degree of ascent, it was unbelievable.  He was after a single dove,,, the dove was flying as hard as he could,,,, he dove into a wall of bushes, thus avoiding the Hawk.

I have seen that Hawk before,, he struck a few weeks ago netting him a poor sparrow.  He grabbed it and took it to the ground and covered it with his wings grabbing it with its talons, he took off flying gracefully though the trees.  Poor sparrow.

I understand the circle of life, but it seems so violent.  The Hawk has as much right to survive as the sparrow.

Dad is moving the feeding trays and feeders to a more undercover spot. The Hawk needs to feed but he is not helping them even though they are such a noble creature.

Dad wont even watch Animal Planet when they have the predator shows.  Dad is a wuss.  <G>

This is WEIRD ~ yesterday, mom went out to get the newspaper, at the crack of dawn. Lacey was in tow. We have nine feeders on our property and have been designated as a wildlife sanctuary.

The bluejays were making a ruckus. We walked over to the "three wise men" (giant black olive trees on the north side of our property), to see what was a matter.

A red tailed hawk swooped to the trees across the street, with a 'jay in pursuit. Moments later, the RT hawk was in our mahogany tree. Mom asked him to please GO AWAY......and off he flew............then the jays were quiet!! The AusSiebelts

Holy Dane Muffins....we fed a Cooper's Hawk a Morning Dove at our feeder. And mama went chasing after it yelling DROP IT. And you know what, it dropped it, then mama ran and got the Dove. She was ministering to it and the hawk was sitting on the top of an umbrella watching her. Well the hawk flew off, and the dove died, and mama cried and cried. Then she buried it. Now we have our feeder hidden too. We agree with the cycle of life, but mama felt guilty cause if it weren't for the feeder the doves wouldn't have been there. I gots bluebirds this spring in the house right above my outside bed, and I like to watch them. I watch the doves too, but I have been trained not to chase them...all mama's pups were NOT ALLOWED TO CHASE BIRDS.
