Still feeling the pain

Can anyone give me some tips on how to help Diamond.  As you guys may know, Diamond was rescued from hurricane katrina & right now we're in the middle of thunder storm.  She didn't sleep at all last nite, she kept runnin up stairs and she was shaking like crazy.  She has the look of fear in her eyes & she's always looking for an escape plan; She looks so sad & scared.  Is there anything I can do to help make the rain less frightful for her?  Please, anything we can do to help her feel more comfortable please let me know.

Thanks

Melatonin works wonders. Rudy & Chloe are both firework-a-phobic. Ask your vet about the doseage. I even take it myself to get a good nite's sleep! You might even try Rescue Remedy (go to health food store). With either of these, put a kid's t-shirt on the dog (snug). That helps!

I have heard of that wrap, but it wasn't available when I had the dog with the anxiety problem. It sounds like a t-shirt or the wrap is worth trying.

I didn't want to go the medication way, with my shep, I have two, and only the male is terrified, thunderstorms and firecrackers. I researched and found this thing called an anxiety wrap for dogs. It was pretty pricey, so believe it or not, I went to a store and bought a latex womans tube top, and next time a storm was coming I put it on him. And it really settled him down a lot. Then I went to a Tee Shirt...which he is more comfortable in. He loves to play ball, that's his whole life, so I figured I would also play ball in the house while a storm was brewing. And this seemed to work. So when I know it's going to happen I go find his shirt, and he loves putting it on. I even went as far as one time, sitting in our hall with the door opened, and the storm on, and with his tee shirt..he was fine. Hugging him just didn't cut it. This so far seems to work for him. My other shep barks at storms and fireworks..and I have had them both from pups. So I know nothing happened that would spark this in him. Your baby went thru an awful lot. Try the tee shirt route, see if that works, heck everyone has an old tee shirt around. Too funny the tube top I bought him had little flowers on it..and my husband laughed, I said heck it works..who cares what it looks like! Good Luck..if you are interested in that special wrap, just google, and you will find it on line.

I used to have a yorkie who was terrified of thunder and of fireworks. Not only did he shiver and shake, but he had diarhea. So our vet perscribed a dog tranquilizer - long word starting with acetom...We started giving it to him anytime there was thunder (in advance if a storm was pretty certain) and on July 4th. It worked like magic. A funny story - once we were in Michigan over the 4th of July weekend and on July 3rd my husband and I were outside on the deck. Our daughter who was tfour at the time was taking a bath, and the dog was napping inside. Someone set off some fireworks which we hadn't anticipated a day early, and then our daughter screamed. We raced inside to find her standing outside the tub, dripping wet and pointing in the tub where the dog had jumped to be near one of his humans. Anyway, ask your vet about a tranquilizer.
