My Blog Entry
New Halter
So, since Dad has been gone, ma and I don't get out a lot. For one, ma is really busy - but I think it is mostly because of the fact that I have always been allowed to run free and don't walk on a leash well. There isn't any place here where a dog can run free unless you're on federal or private property - and even the federal stuff requires a leash in places. So, if mom would like to take me to the beach or river, I must be leashed. I pull on the leash, drag ma around, and jerk her arm off. Ma went to the Dog Bakery where they sell all sorts of pooch stuff and the kind man there sold her a special harness that prevents all the pulling. It goes around my legs and under my armpits and has nice fleece liners so it doesn't hurt me. Then, when I pull it tights up - similar to draw reins or a martingale or tie down on a horse for those of you who are familiar with those.
Ma took me on my first trip with my halter to the state park where the river is. I am allowed to be off-leash in the river because of technicalities that area has no leash law - but once I set foot on the river bank, I have to be leashed. The new halter worked great and I really don't mind it but mom gets confused on how it goes. She took it off for me to swim good - but when it came time to put it back on she took forever! As much as I hate these darn leash rules - this halter thing is pretty neat. I just wish all the other folks I see with their dogs on the river bar follow the law too. It's not fair that they don't have leashes! I guess I am glad ma is law abiding - it protects her and me.
Here are some pictures of me with my new halter:

Wow! Abbers, my mama has a halter on me too, kinda like yours, but when I pull it tightens across my chest. Mama is teaching me to walk 'off lead on a heel' which is hard cause I want to run ahead until she says 'wait', but now I have to stay right next to her. We are subject to LA leash laws which is pretty 'tight'. I agree with Astrid, you have to obey the law. If you think you are the only one who it doesn't apply to and let your dog run off lead where they are not supposed to whether or not they obey, then mama wants to know why you think you can break the law and everyone else has to obide by it. Yep, mama is a rules person too, they are there for a reason, and everyone should obey them. We are glad you are being a good girl and learning to obey your ma and the law.
Is your dad down here fighting the fires near Pasadena? If he is tell him we wish him and the other firefighters well, and to tell your mama to tell your dad to tell all the other fire fighters we are soooo proud of them, and we love them all and whenever there is a fire they are in our prayers for their safety.

The halter looks really great, Abigail! My mom is a 'by the book' kinda mom too so we understand about you staying on leash. I'm so glad your ma found a solution because pulling, yanking and dragging your ma around isn't good. When my mom first got me, I was a 'slip my collar' kinda girl, and mom found the answer to that in the martingale, which I still wear to this day! Your pictures are great!
