When I was a teenager, I worked at a pet store called the Sweet Feed Co. They took pet care very seriously and always sold the best products in all areas. One thing they did is educate their employees about the products so we could in turn educate the customers. We had a seminar about the differences in dog foods. These are some of the highlights that I still remember to this day and the reason why we feed our furry companions Nutro brand dog food.
A. the first 4-5 ingredients in a bag of dog food make up between 90%-95% of what is in the food.
B. (fillers) rice and wheat are good fillers but any kind of corn product will just go right through the dog with no nutritional value, just as it would in a human.
C. (meat) "by products" are just that. with "by products" your getting the bone, feathers, beaks...ect along with the meat. when you see things like chicken or beef, its an upgrade but still not as good as the 3rd choice. 3rd choice is chicken or beef meal. "meal" no matter what kind is that particular type of meat 4 times concentrated.
D. Next time you buy some dog food, do yourself and your furry friend a favour and flip your normal brand over and compare the first 4-5 ingredients and you will see a big difference in what you are actually feeding your companion.
E. (price) true, Nutro has a higher price per say but if you really think about it, its cheaper. If your dog is eating lets say chicken meal instead of chicken by products and rice as a filler instead of corn, they will eat considerably less, get to digest alot more of that nutrition and they will not need to deficate as often. So in the long run, your buying less bags per year than you would with a cheaper brand.
F. (vet recommendation) Im not trying to bash Iiams, Pedigree or any other name out there that vets recommend. I just want to set the record straight. The real reason your vets recommend brands like these is because of sponsorship. Allot of vetrinary schools and clinics are sponsored by some of the big name brands and therefore in return those vets recommend those brands. Allot of them are in fact a decent food but not when you flip the bags over and compare them with Nutro.
Im not asking you to switch brands but inviting you to do your homework on it for the sake of your pocket book and your furry friends overall health. If you do decide to try it, begin by mixing it with your dogs current food and gradually changing to straight Nutro. Reason being is that your dog may not be used to the amount of nutrition it will ingest and often leads to vomiting, this can be true with many feeds.
If you have any question, comments or new information to add, I encourage you to share it with me.
I think we can all agree that we are all here to benefit our beloved pets. Thank you for reading and God bless.
