Thanks:)

$600 is certainly on the upper end - at least it would be here in South Florida. I have heard the number $400 or so, but not as high as $600. Spaying is a lot more complex than neutering, thus more costly. Are there any anticipated complications that could account for the high cost?

I just fainted from that number but i'm awake now. Do they do it at the mayo clinic? I would want a 2nd quote.

OMG---where are you located? I've had surgeries done on dogs that were specialized (ie...when in heat, an undescended testicle, etc) and it was never that much!!! Is this your normal vet??

Nadia, I can't tell you what the going rate is where you are, but the information I have is that it is in the $400 range here - I can't remember if $400 or $450 is what I heard. Considering I have two male dogs I wouldn't know anything about this if I weren't involved in working with the County Commissioners and the Director of Animal Care and Control in trying to find ways to promote spay/neutering without mandating it. One method is funding it for people who can't afford it, and that's where the figures I have came from. Of course, there are clinics where they do 15 to 25 a day and charge $100 for spay (less for neuter) but I wouldn't take my dogs there and I'm sure you wouldn't take yours. If I were you, I would call a few vets and ask for a quote; then you can deal with finding a vet who is recommended by someone you know and respect. Considering that surgery is involved, you obvoiusly want to be sure you have a vet you trust. Good luck.

OMG...I've not the knowledge of veteranary cost/expenses for spaying, but my local spca has a spay/neuter clinic and i belive the cost is somewhere in the $100 range. Sierra was adopted from the spca and her spay was included in her adoption fee. She way spayed before I could adopt. That might be an option to check out. She has not had any issues with this. Just a thought.

Yikes $600 for a spay. I would look in to low cost spay clinics. Your local humane society or spca may offer these.

I agree, $600 for a spay is outrageous! Call the local HS and see if they have a spay day or spay/neuter clinic coming up. Make sure you have bloodwork done (pre op) and opt for the pain meds.

Bella was spayed at our local Animal Care and Control and they did a great job...in my experience the ACCs, SPCAs and other spay/neuter clinics do just as good of a job as any other Vet if not better because they spend all day, every day doing nothing but these procedures. For example a lot of Vets dont feel comfortable spay/neutering until they are 6 months of age but by then most have already went into heat and or are marking. There was a rule at our ACC...as long as they were 2 pounds and 2 months old they were on that table! Not sure about the costs in your area but that $600 is a high quote and they often add on other things to your bill when your dealing with a private practice, because they know they can get away with it.

Females get spayed, males get neutered. Easier to use one word : speuter. It is a combination for spay neuter. Same as getting fixed (uh, they weren't broken). |
