As some of you may know, my rescue baby lucky has sarcoptic mange. My vet is treating it with some oral medications. Does anyone else have any ideas or suggestions. Lucky is miserable being locked away from his new family (so my highly allergic kids dont get bitten by the sarcoptic mites) I would love to be able to socialize him with people and other animals as soon as possible. Please any idea's are welcome!

Make sure he is on a good quality holistic food, to help his skin (& initiate new hair growth) from the inside. Add some plain yogurt (non fat if he is overweight, regular if ok weight). The probiotics in it will also help speed healing. Like a tablespoon 1-2x per day. Good luck!

Just like Tina stated, a very healthy diet (not generic kibble/wet food) but something HEALTHY, will be 1 of the best weapons, he has been starved and will probably eat anything right now, as underweight and neglected as he is,has compromised his immune system. I would find the best food around (search the internet and read some other posts here on diets/kibble) give a vitamin c pill (500mg) 2x a day (we take vitamin c to help boost our immune system), plain yogurt (with live cultures) , and raw egg (including shell lots of calcium in the shell) and have patience. Good luck and keep us posted as to results

I emailed a friend of mine who has a degree in animal nutrition and she had this to offer:
Like you already said, a good diet will do the most good, but it will take time. Probably frequent, smaller meals all day long will help. For supplements I would do oil for the skin/coat. Vit C is a great choice, b/c it will boost the immune system and also helps with collagen formation (for skin) and wound healing. Digestive enzymes and probiotics will help enhance the body's ability to digest and absorb nutrients so it can heal more quickly. Yogurt will give probiotics, just not as concentrated as in supplement form. Probably an all purpose vit/min would be good as well. I would look for something with biotin and zinc included, since those are good for the skin and coat. Tell her to add one thing at a time, maybe a day apart, just in case something triggers a reaction. And if she makes her own food, go for fatty hamburger, or something higher in fat, but not too much so it doesn't cause digestive upset.
We hope this is helpful

I don't know what everyone else's stand on this is... but we use lymedyp in severe cases around the clinic. If nothing else, the sarcoptic mite becomes "untransferable" after about 3-4 dips. It's some rough stuff, I admit that. I've gotten so much of the junk on me that I believe myself to be immune of getting sarcoptic mange or ringworm. Haha. :P
