We have a 4 1/2 month old Lhasa Apso. The vet says his testes should already descend into the scrotum. He recommends we schedule him to be neuter in a month. Our breeder says it is too soon and that Lhasas as a breed usually will take longer than others. Not sure who is right? I do not want to wait too long for fear he will start marking his territory etc... Any advice?

This condition is called cryptorchidic. I would wait another month, and see if they drop. Even if they don't, it won't be a problem to "retrieve the marbles". Tina

Hello there. Charlie - my West Highland Terrier - had one undecsended testicle. He was neutered at just over 6 months old, and recovered within a day. I'd say leave it until he is 6-7 months old before neutering him, as there is still a chance that they could 'drop'. As for marking his territory, Charlie is now almost 8 months old and has never cocked his leg. He's still a squater! I don't know if this is to do with the neutering or not. Do they know where abouts the testicles are? Charlie's undecsended testicle was located in his groin, but they can end up in the abdomen or near the kidneys. I wouldn't worry too much (although I was a wreck before his op!) as they bounce back so quickly :) Take care.

Hi Sally & Charlie, Thanks for your comforting words... they think the little boys are probably in his abdomen (near the kidneys) as they can't feel them in the inguinal space. We have gotten 2nd and 3rd opinion -- all the vets say if they haven't dropped by 16 weeks of age, they will not drop. As it is, we are waiting another month .... just in case....at the end of October I'll let you know how it goes.
