I know this probably sounds stupid because it's not like they are having a life or death surgery, but I think of my pups as my kids and I get really worried about them! My husband is out of town this week so, I'm going to have to make sure they are all okay and I'm a little nervous! We have 3 APBTs, Brooklyn is our 1 year 4 month old male, Destiny is our 7 month old female and Jayda is our 9 month old female. We were really busy last week and accidentally missed Jayda's appointment so, we have to reschedule her, but Destiny has to be at the vet at 7:30am tomorrow (Tuesday) and Brooklyn has to be at the vet at 2:00pm on Thursday. I have heard that the males heal up quicker than the females plus Brooklyn is older and more calm than the girls so, I'm not too worried about him. Destiny and Jayda are still young and they are nuts! lol! They are sooo hyper and they play and play and play some more! I'm worried about them hurting themselves! Another thing is that Destiny and Brooklyn are getting spayed/ neutered so close together that they will both have to be relaxing at the same time, but Jayda will want to play! I don't know, I guess my question is, how long does it normally take for males to heal and how long does it normally take for females to heal? Also, will they be able to get up and down off of the sofa, go for their walks, etc? I know they can't be jumping all around and playing a lot, but I'm not sure about what all they really can and can't do. I know that the vet will talk to me about all of this and answer my questions, but I wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions or anything. Any tips, suggestions, etc would be very helpful! Thanks! : )

Neuter is no big deal (guys will probably not agree). Imagine opening a plastic bag, getting two marbles out & zipping the bag shut. They often just use glue now, no stitches.
Spay is much more invasive. Recovery is longer. I would say at least two weeks for recovery. In rescue, we have had dogs' stitches open (not fun). Might be a good idea to crate (restrict movement) and use E-collars, as needed.
Tonight, make sure they are really clean, as no baths for at least a week or two. See if you can bring a towel or blanket from home for each, so they will smell home when they come out of anesthesia (tell vet tech, it doesn't matter if you get them back).
Don't make a big deal when you drp them off, tell them they are going to be fine and you will see them, tomorrow. Good Luck, they will be fine ;-)

I thought about sending a towel or something with our scent on it with them, but I wasn't sure if they would let me do that or not. I will definitely feel a little better if I can do that! I'm not going to be able to sleep tomorrow night! My baby girl (Destiny) is going tomorrow and she has never been away from me over night! Well, the very first day we got her we had to leave her at the vet for a few nights, but that was really before she even knew us and that was so she could get a blood transfusion so that she would have a chance to live. I don't know, I know I'm really making a big deal out of nothing, but I'm just so scared that they will think I'm not coming back to get them.. and because of what Destiny went through when she was 8 weeks old I get worried sick about her! : (

Imagine this. You are in a minor car accident, you are scared and shaken up. Do you want the first person on the scene to say:
1) Holy smoke! there's blood every where!!!!! ;-O
2) Hey, it's not that bad, you're going to be fine
Remember your dogs are going to mirror your emotions, so if you are all panicky, they are going to be too. I emailed you my phone number. Support line ;-) They are going to be fine!!

Don't be silly ~ saying it sounds stupid. We are all pet parents, here & WE UNDERSTAND!!
Once you get in the car, after dropping them off ~ then you can fall apart ~ just not in front of them. They are looking to you to be the pack leader (aka first person on the scene). Repeat : Everything's gonna be ok!!!! Everything's gonna be ok!!!! Everything's gonna be ok!!!!

Everything's gonna be ok! lol! Like I said, I should be able to hold it together while they are still with me, but once I leave.. lol! My husband is out of town right now and I was talking to him earlier about this on the phone and I started crying when I was saying that I didn't want them to think I wasn't coming back for them! That's my biggest thing, I know they will be okay, but I just really don't want them to be scared and/ or sad! All three of our dogs get really, really, really bad separation anxiety! If I walk into the bathroom and close the door behind me they will sit at the door and cry until I open the door! Whenever we go out for a while we have to leave them in their crates because when we use to leave them out they would try to dig through the front door! We hardly ever go out without them and when we do it's only for a few hours because of how they get. There have been a few different times that we came home and Brooklyn's face was cut up and bleeding because he was trying to squeeze out of his crate! The other day we came home and Destiny had some how scooted the plastic liner out of the bottom of her crate and was trying to dig through the carpet! The carpet under and around her crate is destroyed! It's not like they are bad dogs though, I mean, when we are home they are little angles, but as soon as we leave they lose it!

Brooklyn, Destiny and Jayda love their crates, they will even just go lay in their crates on their own and take a nap during the day sometimes, but if we put them in their crate and leave the house they go nuts! Even if we don't put them in their crates (we do every time we leave the house now, we use to leave them out), if we leave the house or go into a room and close the door so that they can't be right next to us, they go crazy!
I just got back from taking Desy to the vet, it feels so empty in the house now! : ( I miss my baby girl already, I won't get her back until Thursday! I also have to take Brooklyn to the vet on Thursday for him to get fixed. I do feel a little better about leaving her after I met the people at the vets office. It worries me sometimes to take them to a new vet because some vets don't like so-called "dangerous" breeds and I don't want my babies to be mistreated in any way or anything like that, but the people at our new vet were very nice! They were playing with her and telling me how cute and sweet she was! lol! It was almost like they were surprised to see that my APBT was a sweet little love bug! lol! Anyway, so I got the hard part over with, now I just can't wait to get her back! I'm going to have to do this all over again though for Brooklyn and Jayda! : ( This is not fun! I can't wait to get it all over with!

I don't understand why you have dropped her off on Tues. and won't get her back until Thursday? My two I dropped off in the morning and pick them up around 5pm the same day? They were a little groggy but that made it easy to get them home and in their crates for more naps.

They said I might be able to get her Wednesday (tomorrow), but they said not to get my hopes up just in case I can't get her until Thursday. I guess someone had an appointment before Desy and they didn't know if they were going to make it or not?? I don't remember exactly what they said, but they they said if they can do everything tonight then I can pick her up tomorrow, but if they have to do everything tomorrow they said I could pick her up Thursday. Today we had our phone, cable and internet changed over to a different company and because of that my phone wasn't working for a while so, I just told them I would call them first thing in the morning to see what's going on.

I still have never heard of a Vet wanting to keep any dog that long before and after surgery. Most Vets feel that being at the Vet will stress a dog out anyway so they want the dog to go home as soon as possible. Like I said I took them early in the morning and picked them up around 4 to 5pm. I would like to know if anyone else has had to leave a dog that long to be spayed or neutered, this sounds like they are wanting to charge more by keeping them that many days. Vets are like hospitals that is where all the germs are and so the less time a dog spends at the vet the better they are.
Keep us posted on how she is doing.

Better safe than sorry ~ I would rather have the vet keep my dog overnight, than have them rip their stitches and bleed out.
My vet (close personal friend) once took a very sick chihuahua HOME with him, b/c she needed 24 hr care. I happened to be in his reception area, the next day (to pick up HW preventative) . After she was done ranting, I said, Are you nuts? Your dog could have died during the night, and instead of picking your dog up today, you could have been coming to say your goodbyes. She understood after that. Bottom line> find a vet you can trust and have a good relationship with.

Tina if I am reading what she wrote correctly it sounds to me like they had her bring her baby in just in case someone didn't show up and if they can get to her she can pick it up the next day but if they can't get to her than she has to leave her another whole day. I never have had a problem with the stitches as long as I used the C collar and kept them quite. I just think that 3 days at the Vet for being spaded is a bit excessive. Trust me I don't mind spending the money when it is necessary because it cost 3,000.00 when my Freedom had Parvo to save her life and I would do it again in a heart beat.

We've had way too many cases of people that want to take their pets home and then have to bring them back late in the night because the dogs had chewed themselves clean open. Sometimes a staple would do the trick, and others, well... we won't get into that.
We keep our spay surgeries one night and that seems to do fine. Three does seem a little excessive but I would do it if the Vet recommends it. They need to be kept at the clinic not only because they need to be confined and watched, but because owners make A LOT of mistakes when they take their animal home. They don't crate them or put them in small rooms. They feed them the night after the surgery... can be a BIG no-no. And sometimes they'll even take them out to go play ball. When you work at a Vet, you have to see everyone as ignorant (I know it sounds horrible).
As for the appointment thing... it is understandable. A busy clinic is a busy clinic. Sometimes emergencies come in and you simply cannont do surgeries one day. So you're playing catch up for the rest of the week. I'm sure they have a good excuse if it seems like they put you off. A dog lying on the table about to die from being HBC or.. you name it... comes way before the dog waiting to be spayed.
Woah, Freedom... $3000 for parvo treatment?! Geeze... We charge about $450 tops... that's in really bad cases. The clinic has been in business since 1917, though and the doctor here has been a Veterinarian at this clinic for over 50 years... so our low prices come from him being so mortified about what things cost now. Hahaa

Well Unbeliever, Freedom had to be at the vet for 2 weeks and she almost died 3 times and she had to have 6 blood transfusions and finally my Vet did some research and he used the treatment they use on humans with cancer to build up her white blood cells, that was very expensive. She is also a Rottweiler so when they get Parvo it hits them harder along with Dobermans and GSD's.

Bulldogs probably have the worst time with parvo. I'm not complaining... pay what you want to pay. We've used the same product that you're talking about many times, too. It does seem to help a lot with tough cases like that though most can be cured with the regular IV, Antibiotic treatments. 2 weeks is about normal, though. All parvo cases have their ups and downs. One day they're eating and playful, and the next they're down in the dumps. Oh dear. Parvo, the treatment and the owners are a topic I could ramble on and on about.

Just wanted to let everyone know that Desy was out of the vet Wednesday and she is doing great! : ) She really hasn't even tried to mess with her stitches! She tried to lick them a few times, but all I had to do was say her name and she stopped, she really doesn't seem to care that they are there.. thank God! lol! She has been home for a few days now and she is doing wonderful! The stitches are all still intact and her incision looks like it's starting to scab up some now. I have been keeping a very close eye on her since she came home, but I am going to stay right on top of her now! I know that it will start to itch and bother her a little more as it heals up and we don't want to make an emergency trip to the vet!
FreedomKat.. I couldn't imagine having to go through all of that! I don't know what I would do! The absolute worst thing we have gone through with our babies was with Destiny the day we got her. We got Desy and we were told that she was 8 weeks old and happy and healthy! We noticed she wasn't acting normal at all, she was throwing up, she wouldn't eat, wouldn't drink and wouldn't stop crying so, we took her to the vet that same day. After they checked her out they told us that she had really, really bad fleas, almost every worm in the book, she was severely dehydrated and her red blood cell count was dangerously low! Oh and to top it off, they told us that there was no was she was 8 weeks old, they said she was maybe 5 or 6 weeks! They told us that they really couldn't tell us if she would live or not and they said we would have to leave her there for a couple days so that she could be treated for the fleas and worms, get meds and fluids through and IV and get a blood transfusion! I don't think I have ever been that upset in my life! Anyway, after 2 days they told us that we could take her home, but if we did we would have to make sure she got all of her meds on time, we had to feed her every 3-4 hours and we couldn't take her outside or have her around any other dogs besides Brooklyn (we didn't have Jayda yet). They said we could leave her there and pick her up when she was better if we wanted to, but we decided that we wanted to take care of her. Let me tell you, that was an adventure! lol! Oh, all of that was on a Sunday so, we had to take her to an emergency vet. When all was said and done we ended up paying about $1,500 or so, but we were told several times that we wouldn't have had to pay that much if we would have taken her to our regular vet. It doesn't matter though, Desy is happy and healthy now so, it was all worth it! Anyway, I was a mess that whole time and she was only at the vet for 2 days! I couldn't even imagine going through what all you went through! : ( That's one of the reasons that I worry sooooo much about Desy though, I freak out and rush our babies to the vet over anything, but I get more worked up over Desy because we have already almost lost her, you know.

I am so glad everything has worked out well for your pup and you! Yes it was not fun to leave my girl at the Vet. The second week was better because I could go see her but I just hated to leave and I kept begging them to let me take her home and finally they did.
