Upper Valley Humane Society, Enfield NH ~ February 23 & 24, 2008 Shelter Dogs: Behavioral Assessments & Transports – Saturday, 9 am – 5 pm It is a widely held belief that dogs entering shelters in the northeastern United States are arriving with behavior problems at increasingly high rates. In response to this changing situation, many shelters are transporting purportedly “easier” dogs and puppies from the southern U.S. and other regions where overpopulation is still a problem, in order to provide more adoptable dogs to their own communities. Armed with seven years of data, we will explore problem behaviors in dogs entering New England shelters; are they on the rise? Are transport dogs any different? You’ll learn how to do quick assessments for shelters/rescues transferring dogs from rural or southern shelters as well as shelters who have a high volume population. It is critically important to select the most behaviorally adoptable dogs to save. Most often, it is difficult if not impossible to fully evaluate transport dogs before making that critical decision. Cage presentation, sociability and body language is useful for the selection process. Through extensive video footage and live dog demos, attendees will gather useful ways to quickly pick the best dogs to transport. Puppies – Behavior & Temperament – Sunday 9 am –1 pm Are puppies born clean slates? Are aggressive dogs born, made or both? In this workshop we will first define what is normal puppy mouthing, and then explore what is low-level aggression. We will be discussing at what age should puppies be temperament evaluated, and how much of their behavior and temperament can be modified by training and socialization.
