What to do, in case.....

(your) dogs are fighting ..... our initial impulse is to grab a a collar (but then you chance getting bitten/hurt). It's better to startle them with a loud HEY, or splash with water. Distract them and separate ~ if there are two of you, (like at a dogpark), grab your dog's back legs and let the other owner/person grab the other dog's back legs. Credit Batty & Teegan's recent brawl for this posting idea ;-)

(your) dog is overheated....do not immerse them in water. Better to hose them off (make sure water is not too hot or cold). And/or apply water on their belly and underarms. Get into shade or indoors, offer room temp water and monitor.

Unfortunately yelling and splashing my dogs with water does not work, and grabbing the back legs doesn't work with Teegan. It does with Batty. It took my about five minutes to pry Teegan's mouth open to pull her off of Labatt. I do agree with not doing it alone given the fact that you are apt to get bite, like I did this morning. It goes to show it doesn't matter how long you have had your dogs, you still shouldn't leave them unattended, even if you are like me and it is only for five minutes to go inside to make coffee.

Wow, I have two Rottweilers that have the run of the house and have a doggy door so they can go outside while I am working a 12 hours shift at the Sheriff's office and my two never get into fights and even though I was concerned about them tearing up the house they have been great and have not torn up anything. Maybe I have two exceptional dogs but if I couldn't leave them alone for 5 minutes I don't know what I would do. Maybe it is because I rescued Justice when he was only 4 months old and so Freedom has always been top dog so there is no problem even though Justice is lots bigger than her now. I also always let Freedom start eating first and she goes in and out the doors first and that also lets Justice know that she is top dog.

Try an air horn if your dogs get in a fight. Works wonders. Banner and Justice used to fight every once in a while and one blow of the air horn and it was enough to get them to stop. Also, it's great for getting that human kid out of bed in the mornings when they are especially stubborn. :)

(your) dog has food aggression ..... when we first got Jack, he would INHALE his food, then go bother everyone else. He gets fed in his crate, served last (as he is the #5 dog, youngest & biggest). When he is hungry, he will go lay in his "house", like> hello? feeeeed me. I leave the door open, he will not exit until released (when everyone else is done). We have never had an incident, since then.

(your) dog is lost ..... get the most recent photo (or one that really looks like him/her) and make a flier. Include dog's name, your name, contact info, area missing from, and two VERY important things: REWARD and needs medication. Someone is less likely to keep a cute, sweet dog if they think it is sick/going to cost them $$. Post fliers at local pet supplies, vets and stores with high traffic (grocery) ~ ask permission, first. Call the local police, shelters, animal control centers & vets' offices. Drop off/email fliers to all of them. Try to remain calm as possible. Visualize the dog being safe and found. Send the dog a message (ok, stop rolling your eyes) to please help you find him/her. I have a story about my Chloe getting lost (too long to write)...this worked (it can't hurt). Thanx to haasmore's post about Tinker being lost in PA for this idea.

What to do when your Olivia runs away?? Any ideas on this, Olivia has been bolting for the door every time someone is careless and isn't watching.. She has been running around the block, and luckily we have caught her every time so far. She used to come back if offered a treat, or if I called Snowden back, but now she doesn't stop even to sniff ( the other way we caught her). This past time, a stranger stopped in her SUV and got out, and Olivia went over to her to be friendly, and we were able to get her. Are there any ideas lately on how to stop her marathon runs? Please help, I don't want to loose little Olivia.
