Are you asking about a teacup, toy, or standard size chi?

I'm not sure what size our Falina is, but she weighs in at almost 10lbs.

Chihuahuas actually come in a variety of sizes. A Teacup Chihuahua will be approximately 3 pounds - small enough to fit on the palm of a person's hand as an adult. A "regular" Chihuahua will weigh in at about 5 to 7 pounds. But there are larger sizes, too -- although too large to fit the "breed standard." I've seen purebred Chi's (who weren't fat) weighing up to 15 pounds. My husband was wrong about Falina. She's actually 12-plus pounds now. She's my third Chihuahua. My first weighed 8 lbs. My second weighed about 4. Regardless of the weight, they're all very smart, one-person dogs. Although they can live within a family atmosphere, they will pick only one person that they think of as their owner. And they expect their owner's world to revolve around them! They will insist on sitting on their owner's lap, sleeping in their owner's bed, etc. Falina (and my last Chi) even insists on sitting under my T-shirts like a baby kangaroo. They hate leashes and want to be carried on walks. They think they are royalty and deserve only the best. They're babies in disguise who love nothing more than to be held and rocked! Small children make them nervous -- they're better for adults only. Hope this brief little summary helps!

Chihuahuas are Chihuahuas....Certain Breeders came up with Teacup, Mini, etc. to make it more enticing, but what could be more enticing than to look into those soulful eyes and see those enormous ears and tiny body and know they are there for you and you only!.......ahhhhh. But chi's under 3 pounds and over 7lbs are more prone to ailments. My little boy weighs 4lbs and to me he is absolutely, positively gorgeous!!!....I am biased though~~~

True... Falina is healthy, thank goodness. But 4-lb. Taco (my last one) was a small guy for his four pounds. He had a crippled up back and a little limp, and he had a heart murmur which eventually took his life at only 7 years old. He was a rescue dog--he'd been in a car accident with his previous owner (a widow living in Montana) and she had been killed. Taco was in the car with her for a few days before they were found, and he was barely alive. The widow's daughter took Taco, but it wasn't a safe neighborhood for him out in the country where coyotes were killing small animals. So I took Taco in. You talk about a smart dog!!!!! Holy smokes, he even put my smart Rotties to shame! One time Taco made a pile of my ex-husband's dirty socks for a bed, but because the socks stunk, he also managed to find a used Bounce dryer sheet to put on the top of the pile that had just enough "smell-good" to make it nice and cozy. Taco also used to flirt with the young girls in our apartment complex that would sunbathe in the summer...limping over to them and just eating up their coo's and ooh's and squeals (yes, he knew he was cute!). He'd bark at us when it was 11:00 at night, ordering us to turn off that doggone boob tube and get to bed. So many stories!!! I lived for that little guy.

Here is a link to the AKC page with a description and weight size for a toy. They refer to a show quality animal so you can get an idea of what they think one should look like.

<http://www.akc.org/breeds/chihuahua/index.cfm>

But as a pet, it dosen't matter what size or weight your Chi is.

The average size for a chi is about 5lb. That's the breed standard. They can be more or less depending on the parents/genes. Teacups are no an actual "breed" of chihuahua. They are marketing gimmik to get people who are un educated about the breed to pay more for a chihuahua that is basically just the runt. Any breeder advertising "mini", "teacup", or "toy" chihuahuas should NOT be bought from. As they are most likely either a BYB or a puppy mill.

My dog is a LONG-HAIRED/COAT chihuahua, his name is BoJo... There are so many kinds of chihuahua's, tea-cup, longhaired, shorthaired, deer, longcoat deer, mini, longhaired/tea-cup, shorthaired deer, you know??

hahah, the normal size of chihuahua's is 3-6lbs for tea-cup/mini-shorthaired etc; 7-10 for the "average" chi, like shorthaired, longcoat/haired... and 12-14lbs for anykind of Deer chihuahua...

My brother has 3 chihuahuas 1 deer chihuahua 12 lbs (they are like normal chihuahua's with really long legs, and are great for deer chasing, and cattle) his name is D.O.G. (dee-oh-gee)... then he has a normal which is 5lbs his name is Jax then he has a mini, which is 3 1/2 lbs named Poco.

BoJo Weighs 7lbs... he is the average chihuahua(:

There really is no such thing as t-cups size or toy.....Chihuahua is the smallest breed of dog. By AKC standards the normal size for an adult Chihuahua is 4-6 pounds. I hope this doesnt offend anyone but its the truth. The words t-cup or toy words ofr Chihuahuas is made up by breeders who want to sell pups that are not akc correct size.

Very true....breeders that say they have teacup chis just wanna to make a good buck.  Thank God I found a great breeder.  From what I have read or asked breeder about,  anything over 9 lbs is not of show quality.  My one chi is very long legged. There are some great books out there.  No pun intended..lol..but "Chihiuahua For Dummies" by Jacqueline O'neil is very a very helpful book.  Hope I didn't offend anyone.

hi!!

my chihuahua is a white with blue fawn spots short coat male chihuahua. actually in my country the FCI (italian dog federation) official breeders never use the term "teacup". the so called "teacup" chihuahua, is simply a smaller chihuahua than average (around maximum 1kg as an adult, vs the 2.00, 2,5 kg it's supposed to be). unluckly, most of them ar basically not healthy dog with a nanism syndrome that 'cause them often a premature death.

shiro comes from an internationally recognized breeder, he's 2.3 kg, healthy and supercute. don't look for a small dog to put in your purse. that's the most idiot competition you could be part of. chichichickie, you don't offend anyone, that's the truth.

my breeder website is in italian, but for those who wants to see who i'm talking about, here's the url

http://chihuahua.iobloggo.com/

a friend of mine wanted a so called "teacup" poodle, she got it, and he died after a month for a lunge problem. a serious breeder will never call him like that, he/she would simply tell you that the chihuahua could be smaller than average, and maybe be more fragile for that reason. these small dogs often have a faster grow of the intern organs than the rest of the body (ribcage, for istance), or have artery's disfunctions 'cause of their minimum size.

in my country there's a huge problem with this mania of smallest size dog, and to get them they create dogs with serious genetical problems. a chiahuahua of 2 kg, is still a small dog, guys! don't sacrifice his health for your look.

i don't blame anyone who is talking in this forum, but many people ignore these things, i just want you to know, hope not to hurt nobody. :)

Suddenly, after seeing all these "teacup" posts... I wanna scream.

If you honestly think the "teacup chihuahua" is real, read this:

http://www.chihuahuaclubofamerica.com/teacup.htm

There are only TWO variants of the chihuahua: long haired, short haired. We have fat and skinny people in our families; do we break them down into sizes? Yell

The standard size is about 3-7 lbs. Some are smaller (these are just SMALL chihuahuas) some are bigger. The bigger ones aren't showable; but, if the dog is a pet, I don't see why that matters. The smaller ones also aren't showable.

But, for now, I'd say double the size of the chihuahua and you'll come up with an estimate. It won't be correct, but it's an estimate.

PS Some deerheads are purebred. However, most of them are not. My chihuahua is a deerhead. She's also a mutt.

Also; all chihuahuas are toy breeds.

As, in the AKC standard, they are under the toy group. :)
