I spend a lot of time trying to get the truth out about these wonderful breeds and I thought it would be nice to have a forum where owners of these breeds can just talk about their dogs! So many people believe all of the twisted media hype and crazy myths and they know nothing truthful about these wonderful dogs! For example, most people (including myself until a few years ago) have no idea what a "pit bull even is! Most people think that "pit bull" is a breed and it's not, it's a term used to group three breeds, American Pit Bull Terriers (APBT), American Staffordshire Terriers (AmStaff) and Staffordshire Bull Terriers (Staffie). Most people believe that their jaws lock, they are known to turn on their owners and/ or just go crazy, they have the strongest bite out of any dog, they aren't trustworthy, they are born mean and aggressive, etc and owners of these breeds and people who are truly educated about these breeds know that none of that is true. Anyway, as I said before, I just wanted to start a thread for people that own these breeds and/ or know and love these breeds to be able to talk about them without being judged and without having to constantly stand up for themselves and their amazing dogs! I would really like to see what opinions people have of these breeds.
To start this off, my husband and I own three **WoNdErFuL** American Pit Bull Terriers! We have a male named Brooklyn and two females named Destiny and Jayda. We had always heard that "pit bulls" are really goofy and amazingly human like at times and we always just thought that that's just how all dogs are. Well, we definitely understand now! lol! We had also always heard "pit bull" owners say "You just have to own one to understand" and now we understand that as well! I have owned quite a few dogs in my life, I have owned 1 Chocolate Lab, 1 Fox Hound, 1 Cocker Spaniel, 1 Black Lab, 1 Rhodesian Ridgeback/ Rottweiler mix, 2 Mini Schnauzers and now 3 American Pit Bull Terriers. I am an animal lover so, I **love** all animals, especially dogs and I loved all of my dogs with all of my heart, but our APBTs have been hands down, just all around the **best** dogs I have ever owned! They are just so unique and they bring an unimaginable amount of joy and happiness to our lives every single second of every single day! They are **so** smart and learn **so** quickly, they are **extremely** obedient, they are **amazingly** loyal and devoted, they're sweet, gentle, tolerant, loving, affectionate, and **incredibly** goofy! : ) Brooklyn, Destiny and Jayda all **love** everyone and everything! They love people and other animals.. yes, even dogs, and they absolutely **love** children! Sometimes we think that they love our neighbors 2 year old son and 3 year old daughter and my 7 year old sister-in-law and 9 year old brother-in-law more than they love us! lol! They just live for love and attention and they love to give love! Anyway, that's how my monster "pit bulls" are! lol! I would love to hear how other people feel about these three amazing breeds and I would love to hear from other bully owners about how their pups are!

Hi, I must say I don't or didn't know anything about the APBT. But I think they get a bad rap. It is said that these dogs attack because they are mean. BULL! Training, treatment and circumstances is part of a dogs behavior. Therefore a lot of times this can only come from humans.
That's my opinion and I'm stickin' to it!

Thanks for the post! I agree, a lot of what people say about "pit bulls" these days is BULL! Just like any other breed a healthy, properly bred, raised, trained, socialized and cared for "pit bull" will be a wonderful dog! It's amazing to me how some people are! It seems like the people that are most outspoken about wanting these dogs banned are the people that know the least about them! I really just don't understand how people can truly believe all of these crazy, unbelievable myths! Here are some of the myths that I hear the most...
-"Pit bull" are inherently dangerous to people: "Pit bulls" are no more inherently dangerous to people than other dog breeds. People often assume that "pit bulls" are human aggressive because they were bred to fight **animals**. This is simply **not** true! If that were the case then Irish Wolfhounds, Anatolian Shepard's, Great Pyrenees, etc should be considered dangerous to humans as well.
-"Pit bulls" attack more than any other breed: No, the statistical data on dog bites and attacks are inaccurate. Many dog bites are never reported. There is nothing in place to track dog bites in the US accurately. There are 25+ breeds that are commonly wrongly identified as "pit bulls", Those of us who have been involved with the breeds for years have trouble identifying them 100% of the time, so, we certainly can’t expect inexperienced people to be able to properly ID a dog. That said, it leads us to believe that many of the bites that claim to be from "pit bulls" are in fact, inflicted by other breeds.
-"Pit bulls" "turn" on people: In fact, no breed of dog does. Dog aggression is nearly always preceded by some kind of warning, and there is **always** a reason behind the attack. However, many inexperienced owners do not recognize the dog's behavior as aggression, or refuse to acknowledge it as a warning sign. The only exception I can think of is Springer Rage, a rare and controversial neurological condition that manifests itself as a spontaneous attack, followed by confusion, and then a return to normal behavior. "Pit bulls" are **NOT** prone to this condition. There are individual dogs of any breed that may be more aggressive to others.
-"Pit bulls" have locking jaws: NO! "Pit bulls" jaws are the same as any other breed of dog! Any Veterinarian can verify this is simply a myth.
-"Pit bulls" have a 1800 PSI Jaw Pressure: Wrong again. Dr. Brady Barr of National Geographic (Dangerous Encounters: Bite Force, 8pm est 8/18/2005) – Dr. Barr measured bite forces of many different creatures. Domestic dogs were included in the test. Domestic dogs: 320 LBS of pressure on avg. A German Shepard, American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT) and Rottweiler were tested using a bite sleeve equipped with a specialized computer instrument. The APBT had the least amount of pressure of the 3 dogs tested.
-"Pit bulls" are born to be mean. Not True! "Pit bulls" like all other breeds, are not born inherently mean or bad! They can, like any other breed, become mean through lack of training, abuse, neglect and irresponsible ownership and breeding.
-A "pit bull" that shows aggression towards a dog, will go after people next: No, animal aggression and human aggression are 2 **completely** different things! There are many types of aggression in the canine world and they are all **very** different.
Some common questions about "pit bulls" are...
-Why do we hear so many negative "pit bull" stories in the Media and are they true? Answer: There are a few things that contribute to the negative stories on the news. As often the case, negative stories always seem to get National coverage, where the positive stories only make the local news. The Media is not always very responsible with their stories! I have seen news reports of a dog attack by another breed and, yet the media had a picture of a "pit bull" on the TV while reporting this story. I’ve read many stories where the reporter obviously hadn’t done any research, when I asked about their statistics they choose not to reply. Every 10 years or so a new breed of dog is victimized by irresponsible owners, breeders, bad media coverage, and now it’s the "pit bull’s" turn. In the 70’s it was the German Shepherd, the 80’s was the Doberman’s turn, the 90’s Rottweilers and "pit bulls" had all the bad press, and now it’s the "pit bull’s" time to suffer again. And, unfortunately, in a few years it will be another breed that will be in the spotlight.
-Are "pit bulls" good with children? Answer: Properly raised and socialized dogs are great with children! They are able to stand the rough and tumble play of a toddler. As with other big dogs, "pit bulls" can accidentally knock kids over during play, etc so they should always be supervised. Dogs of any breed should never be left alone with children.
-Do "pit bulls" make good pets? **Yes**, but "pit bulls" are not for everyone, just like any other breed of dog. Research should be done on **any** breed prior to making a decision. The best place for responsible "pit bull" information is Pit Bull Rescue Central www.pbrc.net. The American Pit Bull Terrier was the #1 family dog in the US during first part of the 20th century. They are Loyal, loving, devoted, funny, and almost human like in their emotions and expressions! "Pit bulls" bond very fast and very strongly to their humans and need to spend a lot of time with you. If you are not home a lot or plan on keeping the dog in the yard, etc, then a "pit bull" isn’t for you! "Pit bulls" are dominant breeds and require a strong pack leader who is always in control. Obedience and socialization is mandatory with this breed and should be with **any** breed.

Hello... Pitbulls are awesome. ALL DOGS; not just pitbulls are not born mean...we're taught to be mean. If you raise a pitbull to be mean of course you'll end up with a vicious dog. However, there are some really loving pitbulls out there. I have a pitbull of my own. and everyone who meets her says shes such a calm, sweet, loving dog...she's more like a gigantic cat. lol of course she is very protective of her family; but all dogs are. she does give plenty of warnings before she reacts. She has not yet bitten anyone and has no intentions to do so. "just remember we are who you raised us to be!"

I totally agree, I have two Rottweilers, that breed gets bad press as well. I chose the Rottweiler to do Search and Rescue with, to give them good press, I also know a girl in California with Pitts that are Search and Rescue dogs. I say Punish the Deed not the Breed. We all have to be work together to not let any law be pass banning any breed of dog. Look at Idaho, you can't have any dog over 100 pounds in that state and that is not right for any part of our government to tell us what we can and can't have. I have fought BSL in Texas and our Senate and House of Representatives are very sneaky in the ways they try to get laws passed. If you don't have someone looking out for your interests in this they try to sneak it past and before you know it it is a law and it is much hard to get a law changed than to stop a bill from getting passed. So I work with the Responsible Pet Owners Association and they keep us posted on bills that should not be passed.

Petition for FLA residents ~ CITIZENS PETITION TO REPEAL ORDINANCE #89-22 OF MIAMI- DADE COUNTY WHICH BANS PIT BULLS. ~ TO:THE MIAMI - DADE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS
We, the undersigned are tax paying, law abiding and concerned citizens from throughout the United States. By means of this petition, we are addressing Ordinance #89-22/Chapter 5/Article2/ Section 5.17 of Miami-Dade County, Florida. This ordinance prohibits and bans the Pit Bull and “Pit Bull type dogs” from Miami- Dade County.
1) Counties or cities that have attempted to resolve their dangerous dog issues by placing BSL restrictions have discovered that it does not work; it is inefficient and absolutely unnecessary. A “Dangerous Dog” Law or Ordinance, which Miami-Dade County has in place, resolves this problem. Law enforcement can use this to deal with dangerous dogs and their irresponsible owners.
2) BSL Ordinances takes an incredible amount of funding, it is costly to tax payers, time consuming for law enforcement agents, costly for dog owners, and a legal nightmare for law makers, animal rescue groups and animal activists.
3) There is no scientifically proven method and it is literally impossible, by which to determine if a mixed breed dog is 51% of any given breed. This places the burden of proof on the owner and it becomes a constitutional question in itself and on the other hand, a question regarding the rights of citizens in regard to their personal property. Most owners of Pit Bulls are law abiding citizens. The mix targeted breeds, clouded by the different breeds being classified as Pit Bulls, also pay the consequences as a direct result. The banning also directly punishes therapy dogs, assistance dogs for the handicapped owners, search and rescue dogs, drug sniffing dogs, and police dogs.
4) Miami-Dade County non -residents, cannot travel or visit this county with their Pit Bulls. AKA, UKC, and other national dog groups, cannot hold dog shows in the Miami-Dade County area as a result of the Pit Bull breed-type dogs, such as the Staffordshire Terrier and the Bull Staffordshire Terrier being banned and not being able to be shown. This is a financial “Pit Hole” for Miami-Dade County. The loss of revenue for the city is tremendous.
5) Readily available and reliable data indicates and concludes that a dog of any breed can bite. There is NO reliable data identifying biting dogs by breed. This can be verified by JAVMA at www.atts.org. The American Temperament Test Society has available results of dogs tested by them. Winnipeg’s dog bite statistics identify the number 1 biter as the German shepherd.
The AKC, UKC, the American Medical Veterinary Association, American Dog Owners Association , Westminster Kennel Club, Best Friends, The Humane Society, and an assortment of other recognized and respected organizations all stand together against the BSL ordinance.
6) The Pit Bull breed in itself, is known as the “Nanny” breed for it’s gentleness with children. A trait of this breed is its friendliness and tolerance towards humans. The myth of the breed having a “locking jaw” is just that. It is physically and anatomically impossible for this jaw mechanism to exist. They also posses stable temperaments. They are known as the “all American” dog. They are popular as a family dog. They have appeared in films, such as the pup “Pete” from Our Gang (the Little Rascals). To date, it is still one of the most popular breeds in the world.
7) A constitutional challenge was met in the year 2000 in the State of Florida. It is now law, that no breed of dog shall be singled out and banned from any municipality. In other words, BSL is illegal in Florida. Unfortunately, the existing BSL ordinance was passed in Miami-Dade County in 1989, without so much as collection of factual data, consulting experts on the subject, or proper research being conducted. This is unconstitutional and it violates due process rights. It is inflammatory and discriminative and it lacks a rational basis.
In summary, this law has hurt humans as well as the Pit Bulls, for both have suffered at the mercy of this violent ordinance. The owners have lost their beloved pets and the dogs, their life. Thousands of innocent Pit Bulls and other breeds labeled as Pit Bull that are not considered “dangerous dogs” by our county ordinance, are killed with our tax dollars, in our county shelters, as a direct result of this ordinance. We implore you the Commissioners of Miami -Dade County, to end this senseless hunt of Man’s Best Friend and restore dignity to a breed of dog that has already endured enough hardship.

did the Miami-dade ordinance already pass? i thought they already had something like this in place?
My boyfriend has an American Staffordshire Terrier, and she is awesome, she's really sweet... and very very protective... but i think that's how most dogs are...it's just more of an issue with bigger dogs i guess bc they can do "more damage" than a toy breed...that's the only reason i can think of...but you guys are totally right... my boyfriend's dog is so nice when you are nice to her... and if you're good with her family... but she has to know you first...my bf waited about 3 months before he'd let her loose in the house while i was there, but ever since her and i have been good... :) she does get very territorial though, especially with other female dogs around... she bit a friend's yorkie and we were taking mine to the park and we came into the house for a bit, and we were in a locked room but his doggie flipped out when she smelled my yorkie pup

All you pit bull owners - I need advice. In case you haven't read Zack and Quincy's blog about why they haven't been on the site much, it's because I am spending a lot of time with efforts in our county to reduce euthansia of shelter animals. Shelter personnel are claiming that most of the "unadoptable" dogs are pit mixes and pits. When I looked on their website, there does appear to be a high percentage of pit mixes and pits in the shelter. Do you have any advice on what I can recommend for helping get these dogs adopted???????

I think APBT are WONDERFUL dogs, I had the pleasure of owning my first one a year+ ago and she was the most wonderful thing that ever happened to me. I wish people would stop punishing us GOOD dog owners by banning the breed but instead punish the BAD owners by banning them from having any more pets ever and/or sending them to jail AND paying fines. |

I'm glad to see peeps are taking up for our breed eventhough they don't have any in their home! Mom never owned a bully breed dog, but had always heard how loyal and fun and "human like" we can be. I didn't dissapoint! Mom doesn't tell folks that i would help them carry off the tv is some one broke in (when no one is home). My UPS man always brings me treats and trys to take me on his runs with him. But stangers are leary of me because of the hype and I supose my 100lb body doesn't help. But I have changed quite a few minds about our TYPE of breed. My old owners tried to make me mean by hitting me, and mom rescued me! One of my dog friends parents was even being turned by all the media hype (and he is a dobie) to fear a bully's. But after meeting me in person and seeing how well i get along with others he has joined our cause! Wooo HOOO!! Mommy works long and hard at changing opinons about our type and has been involved with TEXAS BSL as well. BSL is illegal in Texas...but some how one town decided that it was going to do it anyway and now they are having a hard time. Mommy and I had to drive through that town just after the law was enacted and I sat PROUDLYIN THE FRONT SEAT (with my dog seatbelt on) and smiled at the 3 police men that drove past us. But mommy and I are working to change minds. My obedience class was a great opportunity to change opinons of the type. Since I'm goofy looking and have long tail and floopy ears (like is should) most people didnt' tag me right away for bully. Their sterotypical picture is that of a staffie... And mommy and my teacher were both proud to announce to the class (after many had asked since they thought i was so cute and sweet) what breed i was. A hush came over the class and then we had discussion. It was cool! My trainer use to own some bullies, but now she trains service dogs. This fall i will see her again because she is going to help be become a therapy dog! Wooo Hoooo all the pets and loves a dog could ever want! Oh yeah, and car rides!
Keep the faith ya'll! And remind someone if they don't think it can happen to their breed, to take a look at canada..labs are on the bsl list in some of the areas! |

I have 2 stafordshire bull terriers izzy and bella. they are brilliant. fabulous around children. people only give these dogs a bad name when the dog is not being cared for. I have treated my 2 dogs like humans and gave them the respect and loyalty they deserve and my dogs turned out to be very affectionate and friendly. Your dog is what u make it. try punishing the owners and not the animals. If they were treated with love and care then they will give it back. |

high, we are new to the line. just read your forum and wanted you to know it was excellent and you pretty much summed it up. we have 4, and pups on the way and they are our joy! they are silly but very loyal and willing to do anything for you! my husband came from a family who raised pibull terriors and has experienced many episodes that were fun, loving and also educational for him growing up. he is now a dog trainer and it is because of this breed. we met and i wondred why he watched animal planet all the time, until one day i asked him and he replied he got tired of seeing pit bulls put to sleep because of bad owners. so he wanted to make a change and give them a chance to redeem themselves, and i fell in love w/ him even more (not just because of the dogs lol) because of his humbleness and dedication he has for the breed. we have 100% razors edge and one staffy and he is the picture that everyone sees. by me getting into the breed they have tought me that they are my protectors, my babies, they are very loyal, they have laid back personalties, they act human, and no offence to anyone but, they have the worst gas i have ever smelt in my life (LOL)! i have learned to just turn the other cheek and my husband gives one back! i know all this seems a little funny maybe even strange but it's good to educate people who don't have one, or, who just might be thinking of getting one. i do know they do need training first, and the rest will come. so keep up the good post! ya'll are cool in our book. derick, lindsey, pmp, midnite, blue cotton candy, liquid steel, oh and we can't forget our fur balls ferby, and chris! |

My ABPT mix is the very first dog that I have owned completly on my own. I do have to say that I was a little ify at first to chose such a dog but I am COMPLETLY glad I did! She is so amazing and smart. She knows when I'm sick and sad.
When I decided to move from Az to Minnesota I was told that because she was a pittbull that she couldnt fly at all. Well she is a mix and we don't know with what, but the lady said that she would put her down as a boxer mix and then she could fly. This made me VERY mad and livid so I just decided to hire a driving service to drive her down up here. She arrived safely and I was very excited.
I do belive that if you are a pitt owner you get more crap then anyone. You can't live in certin states, thats like telling a black and white couple that they can't live in Kansas because they have a mixed baby?!? Am I right? We have to face all kinds of crap and I think its wrong. People had to go through the whole black/white bull sh*t. Why should dog owners have to?!?
Thank you to all you Pittbull owners for standing up to all this. This is the only way we are going to get any kind of justice! They are amazing dogs, we know that, and anyone that knows our dogs know this. Next step the world! haha

My APBT is the Greatest Dog ever. This is the 3rd pit I've owned and I must say APBT's are the most loyal of breeds. We live in Atlanta GA where pitbulls are well accepted. We walk through Piedmont Park, where most larger breed dogs hang out and are often greeted and social with all soughts of people and breeds. Im from Brooklyn NY , where since a kid we were taught that pits are the tough breed. Who out barks who and who scares the other dog off. I truely believe that with the help of other such as youselves will change the mindset of people who fear this breed. |

I own a cocker spaniel/APBT mix and she is my first very own dog. I've had other family dogs, but none of them had the personality like my baby does. It's amazing how people will think when they look at her that she is some sort of other breed other then a APBT mix, when i tell them proudly what she is mixed with they just kinda look guilty like they came in contact with the devil and shook it's hand. At work i hung a pic up of her on my wall and at first i ran around showing everyone my baby until the tech guy made a comment about what breed she was, he presisted to say "aren't they violent dogs?" like he expected me to say yes. i gave him a look that could have skinned him alive and told him to get him self educated. the next day i hung a huge APBT calendar on my wall next to my baby's pic and showed him every single months pic. and explained to him that he's ignorant and a obviously has no free will to think on his own, cuz if he did he couldn't believe such horrible stories that have led to fear of the unknowing in people just like him self.
She convinced my sister that not only the breed has been misjudged, but inspired her to adopt a APBT of her own. Now my Mana has a sister! Well she has two sisters but the other one is a mini whinner dog. :)

We rescued our Stafffordshire from the local arf-anage last year, and he is the greatest dog ever! I have 3 sons, and they play like little boys, and the dog will just lay there, or play with them. He loves it when our toddler gives him hugs. My husband occassionally will take him to work with him, and people think he is a mean dog bc 1) he's a bull, and 2) he's black. People are scared of him, and they are just in shock when they see the baby sitting next to him, petting him gently on the back, and the dog just relaxed. We have become unofficial ambassadors for the local shelter, and for bulls in general. |
