"Yorkshire Terrors" a hard breed to housetrain; originally bred to be ratters, do not mind small, stinky places. We are excellent hunters. We have brought snakes, mice, rats to our mom. She was not thrilled.

Here's an interesting bit of trivia for you: Yorkies were originally owned by the workiing class in England. Their job was to protect small children from being bitten by rats at night. Sometimes there would be a yorkie at the head and the foot of the bed for this purpose. Hmmm - come to think of it, one of us usually sleeps at the head of our parents bed and one at the foot.
Mom says we were easy to housetrain as Zack joined the family when Burberry was still alive, and he showed him the ropes. Then Zack showed Quincy.

Does anyone else's yorkie play with balls in the yard? Phoebe is sure she should be on a soccer team.

Only in the pool outside. But they love to play with tennis balls inside.

I knew about Yorkies being ratters but I don't think my little one knows that. (Or maybe she thinks it doesn't apply to mice) We had a rodent problem a while back when there was construction going on down the street. We had a vacant apartment next door and I went over there to check on something. Of course Sami was hot on my heals. All of a sudden I saw a mouse run across the room. I let out a scream and turned to see Sami high tail it back to our place. Some ratter she turned out to be. LOL (Of course it may have been my scream that sent her packing, but so much for protecting mommy huh!)

We are ashamed to admit...but we are excellent hunters; Zeke especially. We catch mice, snakes, baby opossums. Phoebe has a thing for turtles. We live on an acre, so there is lots of wildlife.....but not for long, we are on the case!

Yorkie domination? First MDS, then the world??? Look how many yorkie members we have here ~ amazing. It would be cool to know the "MDS dominant breed of the week", wouldn't it?

Yes Tina, there are lots of yorkies on MDS. As we are sure you know, yorkies are the number two breed in the United States. Our mom loves yorkies, but not because so many other people do. She has had yorkies in her life for more than 25 years. She loves yorkies because we are so smart, sweet, wonderful, loveable - need we go on? We try to keep up with the other yorkies on MDS; they are all part of our extended pack. Of course, we have pals who aren't yorkies too, but for some reason yorkies are especially drawn to each other.

So i have a question:
Mommy heard when she first got me from somewhere on the internets that Yorkies have a progressive gray gene... is that true? -- i mean it seems to occur in lots of yorkies, or is that just that somewhere down the line they were mixed with something else? (mommy loves me just the same, and i haven't picked a color to stick with yet, but she thinks i'll end up silver like my fur-daddy; which is ok, he was cute... must've been where i gots it from!)

Hey guys and gals:
My mom put me on a raw diet last week and I L-O-V-E it! Just wondering if anyone else out there was doing this. I am just 12 weeks old today but my tummy is doing much better after switching to raw.

Raw diets scare Me ,I have yorkies or yorkie mixes because of allergies ,I love all dogs but Awesome is the smartest I have ever met.He is also very gentle and has been known to pick up bugs and carry them around in his mouth just to spit them out and play some more.Princess I think is part Chihuahua and she would probably be more likely to kill a rodent not because of her mixed breed but I think its just her aura ! very protective even of awesome! |

Everyone has heard of the 36 yorkies found in the home right, well yeah I adopted one camping out at the Palm Beach Count Animal Control and Rescue for 3 days and 2 nights. I ended up with a 3 year old female yorkie. I love my yorkie, no health problems have present themselves, she has been trained to Sit, come (this one needs work), and shake her paw, I just can’t seem to get into the “down” position. Their were no anger problems but rather she is extremely timid, she hardly EVER barks, but prefers to whine whenever I’m away. The usual Yorkie trait of not being handled by children is very present in her, she doesn’t listen to my little 7 year old brother at all. In order of most favored by her to least is 1. Myself 2. My father 3. My mother 5. My older cousin 6 My little brother, not she practically loves me and my father, likes my mother and older cousin, but ignores my little brother. Anyway, I’m worried she is a little too timid, I would actually encourage a little aggressiveness, she is also very lazy inside the house but once a day when she gets the chance to go out she is SUPER ENTERGETIC!!! However, as soon as she re-enter the house the enery is turned COMPLETELY OFF! Another thing my Yorkie shows no attention what so ever to balls, we evern brought specialized miniture tennis balls made to accompany small dogs mouths, my yorkie doesn't play with any sort of ball, chew toy, shoe, slipper or anything. Anyway if anyone has any tips to training, making her more assertive, or whatever I’m open to new ideas. |

We love to play with balls in the yard. We had a big red one until the pit bull down the street broke it, but now we have an orange one. It' cool! Bentley: "I'm gettin' pretty good at makin' it go where I want it to go." Houston: "I'm still learning how to move it around." We love to be outside. It's wonderful. Lots of things to smell and eat and roll on.
