Hello, Sorry to trouble you all. I saw this dog around london last week, took a photo of it but forgot to ask what type of breed it is. Here is the photo: http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=67oy3dc My border terrier pasted away in Janurary and we've just started looking for a new family pet so i'm trying to research some breeds. I'd be very grateful if someone knew what type of dogs this was! Best Wishes, Matt

Chow Chow - They can be a very stubborn breed. Make sure you read up on them, what they need (they need A LOT of grooming) and if you think you are a experienced enough dog owner to train them right.

Thanks a lot, that's definately the dog.. Just from a brief net search it seems like you're right: stubbon, not too friendly, hard to train and requires a lot of grooming!

Well, they can be very friendly if you can socialize them right. But like I said, they are really hard headed and usually it takes them a bit to warm up to a new person. But they are very pretty dogs and very calm dogs too. They're very quiet most of the time. Not saying that there aren't exceptions. :)

Chow chows are TYPICALLY one person, only pet in the home, dogs. But yes, there are exceptions to every rule. I had a photo session with two a couple weeks ago. The older gal has a typical chow chow personality. The boy, a cream one (I told Isis) has a FABULOUS, loving, trusting gentle personality. I remarked to the owner how very very lucky they were that he was healthy, gorgeous & has personality plus ~ he came from a pet store.

Yeah, as everyone has already said, that's a Chow Chow. They are sooo cute and a wonderful breed, but just like every other breed, they are not for everyone! Here are some good websites on Chows... http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/chowchow.htm http://www.akc.org/breeds/chow_chow/index.cfm http://www.canismajor.com/dog/chowchow.html#Temp http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chow_Chow

Matt - I couldn't help but comment on how impressed I am that you are "researching" the breeds to find the best fit for the dog and your family! Too often do I see that a dog has been relinquished simply because it didnt' fit the family lifestyle because when it was a puppy it was soooooooooo cute and they just had to have it only to find that once it started showing certain breed characteristics that they couldnt' deal with it....... KUDOS to you and your family and Jack and I wish you the best of luck in finding your new family member!

I agree, with Lee! With "pre-pet" planning and education, many dogs (especially purebreds, with known traits) would avoid the stress of losing their family and home. I can't tell you the number of times an aussie has been surrendered (acquired from a certain local pet store, who would probably selll her own mother). The store owner assured these customers that since they were getting the dog as a pup (to the tune of $600-$800), it would get used to apartment living/not herd small kids/ be a couch potato/etc. You might visit/volunteer at the local shelter or local breed rescue to learn more, help out and decide to go thru their adoption process. Often, they have a waiting list in case a certain breed comes in. Matt, we hope you find the perfect pet.
