Can't wait to see the answer Tina, because when I was writing DogSense I remember trying to find out and getting conflicting information, including that all breeds are equally related - which makes no sense to me.

Hmmmm since they are two different species and cannot mate, it is hard for me to say. I originally want to guess a Husky because I loved my old Siberian Husky so much and and i loved that "wild wolf" thing he seemed to have about him.
But I am soing to say the Akita, the Shiba Inu (hehehehe I am biased) the Asian breeds, Chow Chow etc. We used to hunt wild boar for dog's sake and we only grow to be 20-25 lbs!! Great trivia question, and definitely let us know your source!

actually Sharon, dogs and wolves not only can mate but have many times. Also, wolves can mate with coyotes and jackals where as dogs cannot....I found some really enlightening articles about it all since I started looking up the answer to Tina's question and have come to the conclusion that there isn't one breed but all.
My eyes are going blurry from reading so many articles - fascinating stuff that DNA .........The study of wolves has always been a passion of mine....
Seems our friends ,the wolves, get around!!!!!!!!!

A dog's hearing registers sound at 35,000 vibrations per second while people only register 20,000. They're able to hear things from far away and even very low sounds nearby. Burglars don't have a chance. Seizure dogs sense when their master is going into an episode, due to an imperceptible (to humans) change in the electric field around the owner.
Dogs can really SNIFF! Dogs have far more sensory cells than people. Some dogs even smell very small things that are underground, such as fungus, or like drugs in suitcases! When something's cooking, dogs can smell every single ingredient, not just the overall meal. This unique ability appeals to hunters and police because dogs can get the job done - well!

I was reading some very interesting articles on cancer sniffing dogs too. I'll try to find them again and post the links.
Amazing our animals huh? So many people take them for granted saying things like "oh they are just dogs!"
Makes one think..........

Do you know where the band THREE DOG NIGHT got their name? It came from an Australian Aboriginal custom of sleeping with a dog for warmth on a cold night - a three dog night would be very cold. The band had 3 lead singers.
