Dog Food, Animal Cruelty & Largest Beef Recall in US History

Yesterday the USDA issued the largest beef recall in U.S. history, the latest action in response to the Humane Society's undercover of a dairy cow slaughter plant in Southern California. The recall of 143 million pounds of beef came two days after San Bernardino County District Attorney Michael Ramos filed criminal charges against slaughter plant workers caught on video torturing crippled cattle, and two weeks after the USDA shut down that slaughter plant. The link I am putting here is very graphic of animal cruelty at the slaughter plant. This beef not only made it into supermarkets, it went to many school lunch programs. I have children and this is obviously very disturbing to me and to many others. Although it did not affect our state Massachusetts, I feel for anyone affected by this, especially the poor cows that were subjected to this torture.
Question: Does anybody know if this has made it into the dog food industry as well??

I caught a minute of it on the afternoon news (and was SICK to my stomach). What a case for going vegan! Probably none of this beef made it to the pet food industry, but I will check and report back, my findings.

I saw some of that footage and it made me cry. I agree with Tina it was enough to make one want to go to a vegan lifestyle. I want to know why dairy cows were even being slaughtered for beef? Aren't they supposed to be only for milk products? Here in Illinois they have two different types of cows , one for beef and one for dairy. There is no excuse for such inhumane treatment no matter which breed they were, but it really breaks my heart because dairy cows are by nature more docile and gentle than beef cows which live a more free range type of life here with less human contact. It all boils down to money, in any industry when purse strings get tighter someone somewhere will always try to get away with bending the law to their advantage. With all of the meat, poultry and beef/ beef by product recalls being issued as well as the pet food scares it does make a person wonder if our whole farming and food manufacturing and inspection systems don't need a major overhaul and update. Friends of ours who are local farmers raise a lot of their own food for friends and family, but even they admit that it's hard to compete with a Walmart price. I'm leaning towards paying more to ensure your food is safe and humanly produced. ( Or growing it ourselves, a big backyard garden sounds pretty good this spring. )

Its just another example of the nature of man. Kill, slaughter and torture the weak and defenseless not to mention the hunting of them and calling it a sport. Like Vicks criminal acts were a sport. Its a sport if you give the animal a gun or arrow and let them track you. I am sickened by all of the abuse of animals, children and anyone else who cannot defend themselves.

Our local school district announced on TV that they "immediately threw away all those beef from the plant in S. CA" so "it does not affect school lunch program at all." However, it just reminds me the dogfood recall not long ago. We (and our dogs) are the ones that consume these food but not sure about the quality of the sources until something (bad) happen. I've gradually eliminated beef out of my and my dog's meals for a few years, and tried (!) to purchase only the local product where I know they come from. I admit they're pricy and I cannot afford them in a long run. But as MaryBlanquart said, I'm too leaning towards paying more to ensure the safety and humanly produced food.

Exactly right. I went to our big health food store, tonite (a treat). Spent $53, left with four small bags.
Just like with holistic pet food ~ people say, but it costs so much more, than what I get at the grocery store. The addage applies: ya get what ya pay for. Don't be influenced by cost and convenience.
We only get one body, as do our pets. Be proactive with your pet's health, or pay the vet later when your pet gets sick (reactive). I have saved FAR more time, money, and energy not going to the vet for allergy treatments, than I have invested in good food and healthy treats. I joke, if I only cared as much about my own health, as I do my pets'! And many have heard me say, my pets get bottled water, I drink tap.

As a vegetarian trying to go vegan (its harder than it looks, and only because its very costly) I get so angry when I see and hear about these things, its just not right to kill and torture these innocent animals for FOOD or any PRODUCT for that matter ... and a lot of people don't know what's really going on in these industries and laboratories (research and learn more on how almost any ordinary household product or the food you eat and what you drink was somehow made or tested by an innocent tortured animal), the abuse and the torture these animals go thru is sickening and just not right... ... I heard recently that in China and probably Japan too, that most stuffed animal fur is made of real Dog Fur, and I saw the horrible video of how they tortured these dogs and killed them for their fur, It made me cry and got me very angry, why do we do these things to animals?, we have alternatives and don't have to torture animals in this way, but it happens anyways because all we care about anymore is money........... If anyone is interested in learning more about this subject, or what products are NOT animal tested etc. go to Peta2.com the information they have on this site is very useful.

This is horrible! I wet vegan last summer (after vegetarian for 3 years) and the cost was ridiculous until I found small co-ops that had fresh veggies and soy stuffs for reasonable prices. The key is having a recipe book and a really big heart (but we ALL already have that covered)...The stuffed animal fur story almost made me cry, I just can't believe how people can live with themselves like that :(
It's times like these I really remember why I became Vegan to begin with...Good Luck ShepGrl! you can e-mail for any suggestions :)

Whether it's our food, or our pet's or something bigger (like politics). We can no longer go with "that's the way we've always done it" or bury our heads in the sand and hope for the best. Get the info you need and make the right choice!

Thanks "MotherSoze"! If it was cheaper I'm sure a lot more people would at least try to be vegetarian (but as I said money is all the Govt. cares about), I've been vegetarian for a little more than a year now, (after seeing a horrible video of the food industry), even smelling meat makes me sick... Thats awesome you went Vegan! I'm sure it must have been hard at first, I have a lot of Vegan and vegetarian friends, and trying to get my "meat eating" friends to go veg! lol... not only is it helping animals but you feel and are so much healthier. :D.......
And you make a GREAT point "TinaValant"! :D
