With all the recent press about animal cruelty, is nice to see there are plenty of people out there always ready to help, this is a story from a australian newspaper,
GUIDE dog Zayna was rescued by Connex rail staff and commuters after almost losing a paw in a freak accident on a Melbourne Central station escalator.
The golden retriever's toes were caught between the moving escalator and a wall as she led owner Janice Lewis to her train on Thursday evening.
Bleeding profusely, shocked and in extreme pain, the dog lay trapped and howling as horrified commuters and Connex staff rushed to help her and her distraught owner.
"I think someone must have found the button to stop the escalator from moving," Ms Lewis said. "Lots of people were helping me, showing the most extraordinary kindness.
"One man took his coat off to put over Zayna because she was in deep shock and shaking, and another person handed over their lunch box to fill with water for her.
"The stationmaster came down and directed his staff to call Lort Smith Animal Hospital, and he sent someone upstairs to wait for the animal ambulance to arrive to direct him straight to us."
Passengers used tissues, handkerchiefs and hairpins to bind the dog's bleeding pads, and Connex staff used their first aid kit to tend to her.
Lort Smith Animal Ambulance officer and veterinary nurse Carl Hartnett said the dog was deeply distressed and shocked when he arrived.
"We bandaged her feet but I couldn't get her to stay on the stretcher so I carried her through the station with the owner holding on to my arm."
Zayna, 4, has lost a nail on her front right foot, but the concern is for the damaged pad on her main weight-bearing toe on a rear foot.
"If that doesn't heal she will lose her toe, and that is a serious injury for a working dog," Ms Lewis said.
The Royal Women's Hospital physiotherapist has had Zayna only since May, after losing her previous guide dog to cancer.
"It was a terrible accident to happen to Zayna, who is still getting over the death of her previous owner and still getting used to me," she said.
"But I'd love to thank the many people and Connex staff who helped me."
just to follow up, zayna's toe is going to ok

Paws up for VA ~ Virginia House Passes Puppy Mill Bill
It was a doggone GREAT day for dogs at the General Assembly, today (Feb 13). Without debate, the House of Delegates passed bills on Tuesday cracking down on dogfighting and so-called puppy mills.
The dogfighting bill makes it easier for authorities to investigate people who engage in the blood sport. The measure was prompted, at least in part, by the Michael Vick dogfighting case. The suspended Atlanta Falcons star is serving 23 months for a federal dogfighting conspiracy. The bill applies to all forms of animal fighting and makes cockfighting a felony for the first time in Virginia. The vote was 93-2, whoooohoooo!
The puppy-mill measure passed 91-6. It would regulate and license large commercial dog breeders, whose operations would be subject to inspection by animal control officials.

When we were in Puerto Rico a couple of yrs ago I had the distinct impression that dogs were of no importance. Fortunatly a saint found these dogs. I guess most people in the states feel like this is another world but its not. Bless all the people who stand up!

Oogy on Oprah today ~ His story is so much like many rescue dogs. It would be understandable why they should NOT like humans. Dogs truly serve as an example to us 2LS! http://www2.oprah.com/relationships/slide/20080214/rel_20080214_114.jhtml?promocode=HP14

Today at 3 pm the National Geographic Channel reruns "Dog Genius".
We share the planet with 400 million dog (toy, working, champion & artistic; dogs who know what to do in an emergency and dogs who know their way around a couch. But how smart are dogs, really?
Most dog owners say they're geniuses, and point to their pup as living proof. NGC joins scientists and trainers to explore canine intelligence in surprising new ways, unlocking new clues about man's best friend.

Congratulations, Parkland, FL~ Permission granted, to cross-post
It is with great pleasure (and pride) to inform you that the City of Parkland unanimously passed a tough anti-chaining law (ordinance # 2008-04) at last night's Parkland City Council meeting.
As a direct result from the efforts of a group of middle school students that are actively involved in a club called P.A.W.S. who picked up the message of the "Break the Chain" campaign, and ran with it; The City of Parkland now has a tough anti-chaining law that will protect our four legged friends from ever having to "serve a life sentence" at the end of a chain.
Thank you all for your support and understanding with regard to my participation in the "Break the Chain" campaign.

Yeah We are jumping up and down. There are no excuses for a dog to be tied to anything with anything. The ASPCA website lists the states that have passed laws against this and other laws inacted. you just have to click on your state.

Dogs for vets.... Got a call from them today, asking for my help with this fundraiser. Of course, I said yes!!!
excerpt: "Roughly 1,400 Americans have returned from Iraq or Afghanistan blind since 2003, said Thomas Miller, executive director of the Blinded Veterans Association.
Thirteen percent of all wounds treated in Iraq and Afghanistan are eye-related. Miller said some veterans are falling through the cracks, and even his organization is unable to locate them and offer support. Which is how Stovroff and Kramer, neighbors in Boca West, became involved. Stovroff said he learned at a VA Medical Center board of directors meeting that veterans coming back from Iraq were waiting 18 months for dogs, which the government does not provide."
the whole story:
